This is exactly the level the bass should have been at in every song. In some tracks I think some changes were needed such as distorting it or playing contrasting riffs to the rhythm guitar rather than cloning it but now you hear why Jason must have been so pissed.

The album always sounded so thin to me even as a little kid when I knew jack shit about instruments, recording etc.

Now I know why!

I think he should have been following in a lower key but it still adds so much more to the songs.

frankly i dont care if they are sellouts. they put out some 'shit' (by their standards) in the 90s and beyond, there's no denying it. however, their 80's stuff (and parts of death magnetic, s&m, black album and garage inc.) make up for it, and make them the untouchable greatest metal band ever, the best band of all time in my opinion.

1) Ulrich's drum line and lyrics and Hetfield's rhythm guitar and vocal lines together compose 95% of Metallica's signature sound. Thus they are the only irreplaceable members and have run the band that way from the start. Hetfield in particular has always been afraid a louder bass line would cut in on his palm-muting.

2) This was Newsted's first album with the band after Burton's death and they basically hated him and hazed him until he quit two albums later.
