  • way overpriced for what it is! i checked it out at rei, its a $170 trash bag, i thaught i would pop it by touching it. might as well buy a swimming pool floatie at walmart. serves no purpose if it gets popped.

  • "you really cant put a price on a good nights sleep" By her look she meant you really could pay $170 to have the worst night's sleep of your life LOL

  • well yes, i can put a price on a good nights sleep. It's called not being a little "vadge" and sucking it up on my trip to save cash so I can keep going out on more trips. My little 20 buck insulated inflateable mat works just fine. This Noe-air is a good mat for a primadonna backpacker as far as i'm concerned.

  • If you want to sleep well on the trail, take a few Tylenol PMs. Helps a lot.

  • Ive popped two before, and im not heavy. Done with that product...

  • iv'e just slept on this mat for two weeks doing the coast to coast walk , i can honestly say its the most comfy mat ive ever used , and its tougher than what it feels like ,

you get what you pay for and this is the best money can get for the backpacker

  • WHOA! DON'T HIT ME WITH THAT AS SOON AS i TURN IT ON.

  • POP!!!! psssssss...... yep it happened to me. You can't get a goodnight sleep on rocks either. people. Please buy the Z-lite closed cell open cell hybrid. it's comfy AND bullet proof. And just $25. No really you can shoot it or cut some off for a fishing cork and it still will be good to use. Try that with your air matress. Oh that's right you cant bring yours by the fire because a coal might pop it. Too bad. Wrap the closed cell around you and it's R value maked it a nice jacket.

  • She looks so tired, don't think it works that well...

  • @geekthinker HAHAHA.. that got a thumbs up... I was thinking the same thing.

  • Thermarest now equates bad quality, bad design and dishonesty on top of being over priced.

  • I am not rich. It took long hard thinking before buying these expensive mats. Now I am out hundreds of dollars. I am also not dishonest enough to pass it on to someone else on eBay.

  • @dinnerandashow - Could you be honest enough to sell your to me though.. I am fully aware of what I'm getting, that way ya dont have to feel dishonest about selling it. I will give ya $60 for yours.

  • @WILCOX11B

    $60 would have been nice.

I already replaced my pad with a Exped.

Gave away the Neoair to kids to use during sleep overs.

  • 3 neo airs, all three deflates over night. Factory repair at cascade designs took 3 months and they sent back a neo air that also deflated over night. Also, this bag can only be used at above 60 degrees F.

  • This mattress is not for the average consumer...we know that. I had to give up hiking after back surgery, because I could not sleep on a lightweight foam mattress, and I couldn't carry a 5 pound 3.5" thick air mattress. $170 later and I am back on the trails. I would have paid twice that to get back out there. Best sleep I have ever had in the bush.

  • Big Agnes already has a pad like that for about 60bucks!!. and it works in up to -10 degrees!! i have one and love it! thermarest over charges because they have a name that people trust, but dont buy into the hype!!

  • Man this chick is ugly who would want to sleep on her pad anyway?

  • this chick looks like she slept on a rock, doesn't say much about the pad.

  • ....and TOO cold for winter use !

  • ok its a thermarest "big deal".

you can go to wallmart and spend $20 and get an airbed, then get a silver foil space blanket or the under floor foil foam thats the same for cheaper than this airmat.

Exped do a better range and warmer

  • "Magazine is pushing this product for their advertisers or for Thermarest are unfounded. This pad is the culmination of 10 years of R&D. You're paying for that, packability and comfort."

Yeah , keep tellin yourself that... its an amazing techical feat that took 10 yrs of R&D to come up with placing the air chambers horizontal instead of vertical. More like a week and a few pots of coffee.. "Hey, lets place the chambers horizontal instead of vertical.. Like the tubes in a sleeping bag!

  • If Kristin had been a guy doing this video, I'm sure you people wouldn't have a thing to say about looks. Why is it that the first thing people talk about a woman is her looks? I thought we had outgrown that childish, sexist, little-boy mentality in our society, Apparently not.

  • @earlymusicus Different strokes for different folks. I prefer a woman that will go the distance with no complaints and would back me in a bar fight as opposed to a Supermodel that thinks “roughing it” is having to stay at a 3 Star hotel and bitches the whole time. Maybe priorities change with experience and maturity.

  • Don't get it !

    It leaks extremely easily !

Didn't even last one night for me (5'6" 110lbs).

Just my weight was enough to open a seem.

I was wearing soft clothing, no metal, no plastic, inside a brand new tent on top of a ground cloth. I even had a blanket over the Neoair to protect it.

Worst part ! No exchange at the store ! I had to wait 2 months to have it repaired by Thermarest.

    Stay away from this mattress!!

    Especially in cold weather!!

Your life may be at stake.

  • I used an air mattress in cold weather and my back was frozen. Has anyone used this in cold (below) 30 degree C weather??

  • @madogblue If sleeping in temps below freezing, it is recommended to use a pad like the Z-Lite. That should cover you in temps well below freezing...

  • Ultralite solo back packer chiming in here. I too was very skeptical of the Neoair at first. However, after multiple nights in multiple conditions, I have come to the conclusion that the Neo is the lightest, most packable, and the MOST comfortable backpacking sleeping pad period. Buy one at REI, try it, and if you don't like it, then return it! But don't be hater just because it costs over a hundred dollars!

  • I just used my dividend at REI to get the Neo Air -R and am excited about the lite weight and full 72".

My only reservation is durability, but REI has 100% satisfaction guarantee so if it fails I'll return it.

My old pad is a 10 year old 3/4 length therm-a-rest and a 20yr old original that weighs about 2.5 lbs.

  • first i hate and don't trust air mats,second $200 for a mat?really?who's smoking what?

  • Slow....so I'm assuming you don't drive or ride in cars or airplanes either? If you did, that would mean that you are TRUSTING YOUR LIFE in tires filled with air that also cost hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars!

  • @maxfaxdude not the same thing i'm talking about, you can get a foam mat way cheaper and don't have to worry about popping them.foam mats still work if you get a hole in them air mats don't but pack nicer,i prefer something i can count on opposed to packablity.but what ever floats your boat, you must have enough money to burn either way!

  • @slowtaknow great night's sleep for the world's richest homeless person. It's unreal what some people spend on camping gear. They spend more for a bag and mat than I do for a mattress and bedding at home.

  • @slowtaknow do they pop easily or what?

  • @Froubz yes they do,they issued us them in the army and after a short while all of our air mats were popped, right after that they reissued the green foam type.*note that i'm in the national guard

  • @slowtaknow $200? I love how you completely EXAGGERATE the price by $80 to prove a point.

  • @silverxmaple at the time i made the comment it cost about that,of couse you could find it for less but most likely still above $100,and a closed cell is still around $20

  • if only it cost that much in australia... add the exporter's lil sumthin sumthing, +importer/distributer's +normal profit = 210USD ++

  • Bulls**t! Has backpacker magazine EVER picked a product that they don't get paid to use?? Neo air is a $3 air mattress from walmart with a $120 price tag! Why don't these idiots use one and stop saying that they did? (for 7 nights) She said herself that it has no insulation! What the fuck is it good for?

  • weight:14oz

    R-Value: 2.5

    freewill51's IQ: 4

you ever hear of a space blanket?? no "insulation" there either. It reflects body heat back at you to keep you warm

  • great review, concise and to the point, the best kind...thanks

  • Wow - I just gotta say - thanks for that amazing study in the human tendency to speculate and talk trash because it's easier than actually finding facts. Nearly every post is ridiculous - and all form folks who've never even tried it. At least Kristen slept on it. I'd suggest finding reviews from REAL people who've use it. YouTube, via the 25 comments above, has proven itself useless in this capacity.

  • It seems that some of the air in the mattress may have inflated under your eyes during that good-night's sleep. OK, that was mean spirited. You don't look like you slept well to me. Maybe that's more appropriate.

  • looks like an air mattress with a space blanket stuck to the bottom of it to provide warmth?

  • I was jeeped about this pad until I laid on one at REI. It's light and it packs small, but comfort-wise, I'm not sure it fairs any better than other air mattress style pads. I haven't written it off, but I'm definitely not buying one just yet.

And like others have said, I wonder how much of the Backpacker hype is justified and how much is guided by ad revenue? I work at an ad agency myself and it seems like I'm questioning more and more of the products publications recommend.

  • Most everything BACKPACKER gives the editors choice award sucks. It should be called the college campus award. And the magazine should be called College life.

  • Over priced !!!

    Its just a air mattress.

  • I was out for a week just now, and my foam pad just killed me back and hips entirely. But i'm weary about air pads because i'm a large guy. Can these pads be comfortable for heavy people too?

  • They dont ship sell the large size yet. And for heavy people any air mattress turns rock hard because of the presure.

For heavy people I recommend two closed cell mattress.

  • everyone including myself passed up on it because we felt its way over priced.

  • Can't put a price on a good solid staff fight.

  • You can put a price on a good night sleep:

$120-$170 depending on the size you get.

  • i will take a regular pad, but super-size my sleep please!

  • LOL

yes, obviously they did put a price on it.

enough to buy the executives villas on the French Riviera.

  • I disagree with the statement that you can't put a price on a good night's sleep. While this pad and the Ridge Rest have similar insulation values and dimensions, the Ridge Rest costs $19.99 vs. the NeoAir costs $139.99 (both roughly 20" X 48"). I think this is another example of Backpacker Magazine catering to their advertisers, not supplying good advice to their readers.

  • dude, look at the size and weight of the ridge rest as compared to this. it is double the size AND weight, not to mention less comfortable and less warm. I have used both, and I am willing to work a couple more hours at my job to pay for the NeoAir

  • Dude,

You have to compare like sizes. For the kids on the short bus, here is a comparison for the size Regular for the RidgeRest and NeoAir: Dimensions; 20"X72" and 20"X72", weight; 14oz. and14oz., R-value; 2.6 and 2.5, Price; $24.95 and $149.99. It may be the answer to all your prayers, but it seems to me that Backpacker magazine is looking for a bigger thumbs up from their advertisers.

  • check out the size of them when they are packed up, though: RidgeRest is 8x20 while NeoAir is 4x9.

The RidgeRest packs in about 1000 in^3, while the NeoAir packs in about 110 in^3.

Assuming they DID have the same level of comfort (NeoAir is better, given that it is much thicker), your money and comfort is taking up much less space when you purchase the NeoAir. New technology FTW for once.

  • Thickness does not equate comfort in sleeping pads, I think we can all agree to that. Further, if someone is really so psyched to save this packed space for an additional $125, then good. Thanks for helping out the economy. I simply wanted to bring to light the jubilant embracing of the dubious luxury of an inflatable sleeping pad by what appears to be a paid endorsement posing as a objective review. I use an insulated inflatable, but only on snow. Even then, I still stack it on the RidgeRest.

  • Thickness doesn't necessarily equate with comfort, but a well structured inflatable blows a closed cell foam pad out of the water for comfort. This pad is way more comfortable than its closed cell cousins of similar weight, larger size, similar r value and substantially lower cost. Your claims that Backpacker Magazine is pushing this product for their advertisers or for Thermarest are unfounded. This pad is the culmination of 10 years of R&D. You're paying for that, packability and comfort.

  • You must not be a backcountry hiker, because this amount of space is worth the extra 100 dollars it costs. BTW, I have both the ridgerest and the neoair and the neoair wins hands down. I've taken it to mountaintops in colorado and will be taking it to yosemite, crater lake, nassan, and the redwood forests. Trust me, for real backcountry hikers the size makes a difference.

It probably doesn't matter to you JohnnyZu because you likely just car camp, where this kind of cost is not justified.

  • I can agree with you and I'm not trying to be a comment hunter but Backpacker Magazine are not trying to promote this product they're just telling it as it is.For a minimalist backpacker space and weight are at a premium, the NeoAir can fit inside a 1 litre nalgene bottle whilst the Ridge Rest won't even fit inside your pack but they weigh exactly the same.Backpacker magazine are not catering to their suppliers, they're giving honest advice.

  • If it's really important to anyone how Kristin looks, I'll send in a photo of myself when I just wake up on a backpacking trip for comparison. UGH!

I for one would not kick her out of my sleeping bag!

  • Ditto

  • What about the noise of the fabric did that bother you?

  • I agree Jono but I don't think that a good night's sleep is going to make this nature girl look much better.

  • Great vid but,

you look like you need a good nights sleep.
