@clayton5150 power output tubes definitely add to the tone, especially at higher volumes or if you're using a power attenuator. output tube distortion is smoother and less harsh than preamp distortion. the chinese shuguang tubes sounded pretty good when i owned the amp.
what do you think is better for me being leadguitarist in a metalcore band (think parkway drive, as i lay dying, killswitch engage, ...)? framus dragon, framus cobra, orange rockerverb or peavey 6505+?
@deestra you can make just about any amp sound good for metal by putting an eq in front of the preamp and an eq in the effects loop, both of which are set up with boosted mids. then fiddle with the eq knobs on the amp itself until it sounds like the way you want, and be sure to test it at loud volume when playing with a band because you need to be able to cut through and not sound like mush. if you need versatility clean and grit, maybe go with the dragon.
quality, im going to get one eventually... that Framus head looks and sounds awesome too, is that the cobra or the dragon? + how much was it n where did u get it from?
it's the cobra. i paid 1500 for it from a store in austin, tx about 8 years ago. there are not that many stores that carry it in the usa, so go to the framus web site to see the latest list of american dealers and maybe there's one near you where you can try the amp and see how you like it.
@munchy040 haha had to check this for my original comment and 10months ago i didn't know the difference between a cobra and dragon!
No i haven't got my hands on 1 yet - still trying! I have got a 5150 mk1 in great condition though :D
I think the Cobra is cursed though as i have paid for 1 didnt get it so had to claim, made a deal for another then that fell through and now im trying to get another!!
@munchy040 I WISH! I love the VH4 - but can't afford one!! Im looking at 2nd hand Cobras ie. 650-750 GBP. Not 2000 GBP Diezels! (Everything is more expensive here in UK :( )
It sounds a bit harsh. I think it might be the placement of the camera because if I sit down on the ground close to my amp it gets a really rough, scratchy tone that sounds like shit.
your freaking crazy if you really think that. I had a tripple x with a marshall 1960 vintage cab then moved up to a framus cobra and a mesa 4x12 oversized straight slant rectifier cab. blew this thing away. you couldnt even hear the tone on the xxx when you played both at the same time, cause of how weak it was. and this head cuts through mixes amazingly
hey brian, what's up? yeah i've been listening to metal since metallica's "and justice for all" album back in the day. i got into killswitch a few years ago because of the way they do their tone which is nice and crunchy but not shrill. and yeah, we'll need to get together soon and hang out.
that's right. i use it in front of the clean or lead channel depending on what kind of guitar i'm playing. in front of the clean channel it's a warm overdrive. in front of the lead channel it tends to drop the bass and boost the high mids.
no, the notch switch was not on. the sound is fairly scooped in this one because i had the mids down. i've since changed to having all the dials on the amp set to 12 o'clock and i do my tone shaping with an eq in the effects loop on my g-system. and yes, the digital camera has a pinhole mic so it's definitely not recording quality.
I own a framus cobra head and i can assure you that you can have a lot of different sounds and psst, all high standing amplifiers are great and it's possible to get extraordinary tones with all of them.
in order of importance to get a good tone
1: good fingers
2: good guitar (woods, pickups, craftmanship and new strings)
i agree the amp is but one of many variables that can lead to a good sound. i recently played my rig through a marshal dsl -50 for a couple weeks and it sounded different but good.
good fingers is not #1 to get good tone....thats a stupid statement.
good amp and good cab go hand in hand...they cant be ranked one above the other. you can make a great head sound like shit through the wrong speakers/cab, and you can make a great cab sound like shit through a POS head.
yes, since this recording i've dialed back the treble quite a bit. nowadays i keep it set between 3 and 4. the bass on the lead channel adds too much mud, though, so i have that dialed back to 3. mids are at 8. the lack of bass on this recording is because of the pinhole mic on my digital camera.
i posted this a year and a half ago and since then i've cleaned up the sound quite a bit so you can better hear the notes. it's a fine line between good-sounding saturation and mud.
Look, 5150,6505 and all other peaveys produce a round smooth saturated tone.
The cobra is a bit dry, with a flavor of british grit somewhat like a thicker old rivera knucklehead. So there is really no comparison between those amps simply because one is for character and the other for modern saturation.
engl are one of top amps for people wanting heavy riffs but it comes at a price, I use line 6 spider 2 and its good enough for what we are doing if we get more serious i would buy an engl.
not comparable by a long shot to the cobra though. the peavey is pretty heavy and saturated, it does have a good rythm sound but for leads, well, it doesnt have any kind of character, the sound is not as open and breathing as a good amp's lead sound. But for rythm work it is a pretty handy kind of tone.
cobra fan boy? Haha. Your the only person who ive ever spoken to and that includes UG that doesnt mention 5150 for leads i mean EVH made the amp for lead work. The cicurity is based off the SLO100 <<< ultimate lead amp Haha
If you really think that the peavey is even close to the slo you are out of your mind. Circuitry is not everything, you can copy it and build it with 100 bucks cost. But what about the quality of the components and of course the transformers? This is the reason why Marshall are so fizzy and Wizards or splawns or Camerons are so nice and smooth even though they are basically the same circuit.
And I dont think anyone would mention the peavey for leads if amps like Camerons, Splawns, Soldanos, Bogners, Diezels, Framus, Elmwoods, Cornfords, VHTs, Koch, Fuchs, were on the map.
idk man. i know like 3 people with cobras and 5150's and most of them bring both amps to shows and use the 5150 and the cobra if the 5150 blows up which it never will. 5150 and a maxon overdrive is very similar to cobra without one.
the most i hate is to use digital pedalboard...like line 6 or zoom...in live session...if u use for home recording they are "good"....but in live gigs it's the worst thing on this planet for me... sounds so unreal...so my suggest..is to buy a use midi tube amp...like H&K...midium class but good enough...check the tube..and get stompbox or a rack unit!!!it's the best for gigs
Hey, I know your question wasn't aimed at me, but I was shopping for new gear back in 2007 and tried out some ENGL's (the Powerball and the Fireball) and then the Framus Dragon and Cobra. For my money the Framus Cobra was the best of the bunch in terms of price range and tone I wanted (plus it looks badass), but the ENGL's are indeed awesome too.

yeah, i've had a few other people point that out. i've since dropped the gain a bit and it sounds less mushy. you can hear the notes better, especially in a jam situation.
man what`s your problem? He did this song great, and it sounds tight. Are you jealous or something ? Think about getting a couple of videos your self.
my favorite tone joel has ever used is either the mesa tripel rec with art 15 band eq, and maxon od808, (you can here this on the 3 live end of heartache bonus disc songs (life to lifeless, fixation, my last serenade)) or the dvd tone, the dvd show was played with H&K triamps (yucK) but they re dubbed the audio with the soldano slo-100 and maxon od808 at zing studios) when joel uses the triple rec without the art eq i hate it though! (ie: my curse live on jimmmy kimmel)
Ya, I'm friends with Joels best friend and Joel really didn't like the triamp. said it "didn't hold it self together well" which is basically poweramp distortion setting in too early. The amps they used on stage the last couple of shows they did in the US were Splawn Nitro heads with Kt88 tubes (hiding behind there mesa cabs because of endorsement reasons) But now that they're in the studio they're probably using mesas, splawns, framus and MUCHHHHHHH more (5150 too i hope :) )
me lol, ive talked to joel several times, the LoG tour was Diezel VH4 for joel, the one after that was splwan nitro (for joel) and i geuss adam really wanted to get one to (but idk if he did) and joel told me that he wont use triamp mkII anymore because it, and this is a quote from him "dosent hodl it self together at loud volumes, i like it for rock stuff but DEFFINATLY not jack hammer metal riffs" thats what he told me n.e ways
yeah i understand they also use hughes & kettner. i think it goes to show that you can get a great sound out of many kinds of amps in combination with the right guitars, pickups, pedals, and speaker cabs.
I don't believe so. I believe they used Mesa Road Kings and some Hughes and Kettner TriAmps. In studio i've seen them with 5150s, Soldano SLO's, and some Framus Cobra's and Dragons.
hmmm yes they do use a variety to "RECORD" but live they still use either roadkings or cobras. mostly they use their mesa boogie roadkings. expensive head. but it sounds wicked amazing!
man they used joels soldano slo-100 into joels 412 mesa and a dual rec boosted by maxon od808 into same cab, lone star for some cleans, fender vibroluz for some cleans, theres actually an adam interview u can find on google where adam talks about how the majority of ADLD was soldano, but they didnt use ANY cobra for that record, they also used an ENGL somthing for 1 song on ADLD, i know the guy who let joel borrow his engl
they use mesa roadsters on As Daylight Dies. They used Framus Cobras on End oh Heartache. Hey, check out my page. Its like everything Killswitch. Go Killswitch Engage.
they sometimes do live, daylight dies was joels soldano slo-100 with a depth mod. boosted with a maxon od808 into mesa boogie 4x12 rec cab and dual rec boosted into same cab later on, they did use the cobras actually on my curse i believe because i remember telling my friend who is good friends with joel that i liked the my curse tone and he said back "FRAMUS COBRA BABY!" or he might have said framus dragon, i forget
if i ever get around to figuring out the old recording interface for my computer i can try to record the sound at high volume using the e609 cab mic i got recently. keep an eye out.
part of it is because the camera is in a really bad place (right where it would pick up tons of treble)
You should remake the video with the camera off axis and not directly in front of the amp so that it doesn't pick up too much treble. It sounds like you've got a good tone going though :)
sounds like fucking shit and muddy

in the studio for as daylight dies, they used triple rectifiers and also Soldano SLO100's. you were right, roadsters for live setup.

They used Framus DRAGON with Peavey 5150 on End of Heartache, except for the song Rose Of Sharyn where they used Framus Cobra.

they sometimes do live, daylight dies was joels soldano slo-100 with a depth mod. boosted with a maxon od808 into mesa boogie 4x12 rec cab and dual rec boosted into same cab later on, they did use the cobras actually on my curse i believe because i remember telling my friend who is good friends with joel that i liked the my curse tone and he said back "FRAMUS COBRA BABY!" or he might have said framus dragon, i forget

if i ever get around to figuring out the old recording interface for my computer i can try to record the sound at high volume using the e609 cab mic i got recently. keep an eye out.

Actually could probably use a bit less gain and treble. :P

part of it is because the camera is in a really bad place (right where it would pick up tons of treble)
You should remake the video with the camera off axis and not directly in front of the amp so that it doesn't pick up too much treble. It sounds like you've got a good tone going though :)
