Should There Be a Super Heavyweight Division?

for those who talk shit about non fighters who are employed by any MMA organization, such as announcers, commentaters, or any staff, keep in mind, they have access to training, gyms, and im sure more knowlege of MMA than the average joe, so dont think just because they're not fighters per se, that they cant fight. have you ever seen bruce buffer in anything other than a tux? the guys pretty ripped, and a legit black belt

The thing is, how much is weight really an advantage in heavyweight? Cain Velasquez beat Ben Rothwell who had a huge weight advantage on him. Doesn't weight sort of become a disadvantage at some point? What I mean is this: Would a super heavy fighter actually stand a chance against a fighter who will inevitably be faster then he is?

I think it's an interesting idea, but like everyone says there's no way it would fly. Brock lesnar has proved that one can be that big and still be a very successful fighter. Right now three out of the 4 top guys are all 265, so you may start seeing more huge guys in the ufc but I they won't make a weight class above that, maybe in a smaller league but not in the UFC.

HVW: 206+ Pounds (Max: 265)

I think the HVW division will eventually be split into two.

What about a minimum weight for the HVW division? I think 235 pounds should be the minimum weight and anyone under that can cut down to LHW.

@SColdSA83 You may have read this but the Ohio SAC is experimenting with a new 225 lbs Cruiserweight division for amatuer mma fights. I can see them modifying it and adjusting it 230 lbs as a sanctioned weight class, 60 lbs is too great of a gap between 2 weight classes. I could see Cain and JDS fighting for the title in this new weight class if it becomes a regular UFC weight class

i think if they seperated the heavyweights from the super HWs, it would ruin the appeal of the Division. The good thing baout the div is that you can weight as much as u want and it gives fighters alot of options on weight., plus you dont have to hear excuses about cutting weight.

I agree with the earlier posts about 205-220 for another class, then go heavyweight. That gives the medium sized guys something to shoot for, and the pool is big enough for a really good weight class. All the 235-240 pound guys could go either way.... now.... is there enough of a pool above 235-240 for a good group????? That might be a problem.... how deep is that pool????

haha ... if they don't want to fight freak heavyweights like Lesnar and Carwin then just drop down a weight class ... and example is Kimbo Slice ... hes' a heavyweight at 230, if he can make 215 he can make 205 ... i just think it would be a good idea for Kimbo to fight at 205 rather than heavyweight ... the main reason is that guys like Roy Nelson who only use their weight as advantage ...

Yeah, I agree, I think that super heavyweight is just a dumb idea. There is not enough talent out there, and other than Lesnar, all the other huge heavyweights are just freaks. I do like the Shaq idea though.

well u have to think Brock L is allready a super heavy weight and has to cut down to heavy weight ..hell Frank mir had to do the same thing for his last fight..ANd i do think it is unfair for fighters like Pat Berry to try to compete against men of their size...but if you make that weight class there will be a few good fighters and the rest will blow...hard choice

Its a good thought but the fact is, there is not enough good talent above 240 to bulid a division. Nobody wants to see a group of 5 ppl fighting each other on every PPV plus in boxing and MMA history plenty of ppl have moved up through the weight classes and fought ppl bigger than them...AND WON!! There is no need to lower the standard now days!! I think it would be a better idea to cap the Heavyweight division at 240....lets face it there not much talent above that neway!!

I've seen Super-Heavy Weight highlights on HDNet. It was just a bunch of fat guys that looked like they enjoyed fighting in their spare time. It didn't look like any true kind of elite athlete competition.

They should split the heavyweight division in half. Let's do some math. Difference between lightweight and welter: 15lb, welter/middle: 15, middle/lightheavy: 20, light heavyweight/heavyweight: 60 pounds. There seems to be a mathematical anomoly here. If dana white had done better in high school math, he would see this. Could kimbo beat a brock sized guy? no. Could kimbo beat other people who weigh 205-235? Absolutely positively. 205-235 should be heavywieght. 235+ should be super-heavy.

I saw Shaq fight Oscar de la Hoya in an exhibition boxing match, and he lost. He looked pretty slow and clumsy. From what I saw, he didn't look nearly as agile in the ring as he does on the basketball court.

I guess seeing people above 265 competing wouldn't be all to interesting, however, I'd love to see a heavyweight division at -220 and perhaps a Super heavyweight divison at -265. It's a good start.

I do not think there should be a Super Heavyweight division because there will be more heavyweights going to 265...Frank Mir is the 3rd HW in the UFC (currently) to cut from 280 to 265 at the weighins then back up to 278-280 fightnight.
