Siege battles are cheap because the attacker's army would be half gone by the time when they reach their opponent's army (if it camps in the square) due to the towers and oil.

welcome to a campaignlike battle, Prince. You will have leader cav with more hp and many times high experience. Also they're easily retrainable(you can refill the unit card) in cities. The glowing of the auxilia at the end is them leveling up. You get a lot of xp from dying, defending and being few units actually
