We don't just take it and pray to it, we ask God to reside in it while we are praying and accept our prayers, then when we are finished we ask God to return to our hearts. At the temples God is always present in these energized forms.
It's a means of focus, for part of the spiritual journey, for part of our life. In any religion one can lack focus, and in a mosque or chruch have their mind wandering about money, etc.
