Nik Cohn did state PJ Proby "split his velvet trousers from knee to crotch" 3 nights in a row, which the singer denies now saying the split was small and across his knee. Things were different in 1965 but nobody believes there was an uproar, even in England, over a knee.

If I had met Elvis Presley even once I would have made a real effort to get a photograph of myself with the man to prove it. I mean ELVIS will always be The king of Rock 'N' Roll. BUT dear reader, despite, according to PJP, knoing Elvis from age 14, there exists Not One single photograph og PJP. Jim Smith or Jet Powers with Elvis Presley and lets face it folks Presley was not shy of cameras. So how would this strange matter of the missing picture be explained? Simple, PJP never knew Elvis. He was very talented but ( and I may be wrong here) I think he is somewhat lacking in originality as far as his singing went-- he could mimic any style of singing, witness his brillaint impression of a languid BBC fairy at the start of this clip.Thanks for posting, takes me back, Jack!

P.J's banning should never have happened. It was all a big to do about nothing. Why people were so offended about split pants when only his legs were exposed is beyond me. Isn't it funny how they just happened to have Tom Jones waiting in the wings ready to take over. The whole thing was geared up simply to get Tom a job & to put P.J's promising future on hold. P.J's still performing with gusto at age 70. He truly deserves a medal for putting up with all the crap he's been dealt over the years.

Thanks for that. I have a sneaky feeling that the song I'm thinking of is 'I've Got My Eyes On You'. It's on the 'Believe It Or Not' LP which is very pricey. It's definitely from '68 as the other song PJ sang on that episode of Beat Club was 'What Is Wrong With My World'.

There is a lot of the "Hold Me" song videos on the site. Where though is his hit that he sang probably the same year called "Together" another version of an old song like "Hold Me." I feel that "Together" is just as much, if not more a raunchy rocker. Does anyone have have access to this song?

Hi, sorry for delay in replying, PJ did a lip-sync for Together on top of the pops(bbc) and for Thank your lucky stars(itv) but the expensive videotape has long since been wiped, and nothing remains in archive.

Since March 2007 in Blackpool PJ has included Together in his live shows. Regards.

I met this man in the 60's when I was about 19. I had never heard of him & didn't know he was famous. He was about 10 yrs older than me and my friends..we hung out with him at his house a few times. He never acted ungentlemanly toward any of us, not because we were ugly, lol, but because I think he sensed we were innocent (virginal)young girls. The *guilty* older girls would sometimes be there too, and they would go off into the bedroom with him. He had no lack of sexual opportunities.

PJ Proby is one of the best 'unknown' singers I've seen. How he never went over bigger than he did is beyond me. I've got a very interesting and rare studio song with PJ singing, John Bonham on drums, Page on guitar, JPJ of course on nass and Plant on tambourine. It's a fantastic sounding sound to boot.

I went to his show on 27/03/08 at Customs House in South Shields.I have to say I did not know what to expect, but he gave his all.A fantastic show, he puts all his energy into it, he does have a very good vocal range still.

If you can catch one of his P J Proby shows, I would recommend it, excellent value for money.

LOVE his voice! What a voice! Second only to Roy Orbison, he is and was underated as a singer.

Appeared in Nelson Imperial in 60's, I was nanny for Alec Holt who owned the Imp in those days, got back stage and was too much in awe to even speak! Had his famous ponytail. I was about 16 so it would be 1963

I was so disappointed when PJ was thrown off that tour but I did see him later at a concert at the Cecil in Hull though I have never read anything about that tour in his biographies.

When he fell out of sight after he split his trousers I felt that I had lost the most important part of my teenage years.  Thank goodness for YouTube

im so proud to be able to say that pj proby is my godfather i see him quite alot when he comes over to the uk i go to see him in his dressing room when he comes off stage he hasn't changed 1bit by the looks of it except he has given the booze up he is now totally t total. i have a lovely photo of him at my christening and still have my st christopher that he bought me.he was quite a looker bk then i must say!!

This is nice for you that he is your godfather, but not sure what you mean about when he comes over to the UK, he lives here and has done for a long time with the exception of some short visits back to the States when he was pushed out of the UK. Undoubtedly one of the most underated stars we have ever known in this Country.

What a tragedy that he chose to go salacious instead of letting his voice reach the pinacle. He insisted on doing the pants-splitting thing on purpose, even after he was warned. Was it worth it? Most indubitably not. What a waste of great talent. I think maybe he had some sort of career death-wish.

Whatever the reasons behind PJP`s past activities, the truth is that he is STILL one of the world`s greatest singers and entertainers. 100% pure talent and true grit!

Alas, it is BECAUSE of his great talent that I rue the tragedy of his past aborting of his career with bad choices and a sort-of addiction to being outrageous/offensive/difficult to work with. PJ, himself, says, that the exposing himself schtick hurt his career. That's all I'm saying.
