One of my absolute favorite shows. Had it on cassette, played so much it broke. Thanks for posting so I can have it in mp3....and the legend can carry on...
That's the pinnacle... Jerry moves me like no other... the range of emotions I feel in his music... My god, to feel things so deeply... a blessing. I've heard so much of his music, but never a funky version of catfish john. There are still GD songs i've never heard... Dios mio. Thank you Jerry!
Back in the day we would bitch and moan a little for the opening of how sweet it is >catfish john but some how by the end of catfish john we would be smiling from ear to ear..I remember walking out of the late show this night and it was snowing heavy going down the turnpike it seemed like i could count every snowflake that hit the windshield,i wonder if it had something to do with those thick orange gels we ate?
@alexpetro27 astute observation. I see it as a kind of reconstruction era song; the lyrics say "born a slave" as if to say he's a slave no longer. I imagine some old black man emancipated but homeless, living off the fat of the land, fishing up catfish from the Louisiana delta. The parents warn their little boy to never approach the negro but the child spends all his time with him anyhow.
love you jerry... wish i was 18 in 1965 all the way to 1995 and was in the first row in front of jerr.... whether he was on the right side or left. absolute master guitarist.... he is what made me want to pick up the instrument.
i used to love to see the garcia band in this era! i miss donna jean on back-up vocals; song doesn't sound right to me without her soulful addition at the refrain, and though i love jerry's voice, especially on ballads, he needs her on this particular song......what a great song and what a cool cat.

@hoot6theyre The original was a straight up country/bluegrass song from the early 70's. I would say Jerry's take is sort of a slow reggae-rock version. Whatever you want to call it, it's unmistakeably Jerry.
Classic Jerry --!!...that sweet, lilting sound.. ..notes....rippling down your body on a Full Moon - by the Catalyst in Santa Cruz...amongst the begonias...sigh.....hahha!..man..the man opened up so much for me...music..literature....art..new ideas..adventure into the Great Unknown....Rest In Peace Jerry!...I think he taught me what it means to be truly human. Thanx for the vid!
Three bands and more at this period, Dead, JGB, and Old and in the Way, plus some with Merle Sauders. He owned the Bay Area. Glad to hear a craftsman. Looks like somebody used a Sony Port-a-pack (about seven pounds of camera and twenty-five for the recorder) to video and got too close to some electronics, those things were just sensitive.
@mcrafarm BRO I AM PRETTY SURE THAT THERE WAS NO LEGION OR ANY OLD AND IN THE WAY GOING ON AT THIS TIME MAINLY BECAUSE OLD AND IN THE WAY ONLY PLAYED A HANDFUL OF SHOWS "73 AND JERRY WAS NOT PLAYING WITH MERL AT THIS TIME. BUT IT WAS WISHFUL THINKING FOR SURE.
i love the sound of jerrys mutron pedal the studio outtake of this song on terrapin station from the beyond description boxset is also excellent definately worth a listen
poor Jerry, his music is ever so wonderful and exhilarating although his health was constantly put on the backburner due to his pending addiction. rest in peace jerry.
wasnt just the addiction....the man barely slept took every gigg they could get partied non stop over on haight ashbury...just started to catch up to him...love ya jerry rip
enjoyed the song so much ive listened to it twice and as much as i listen to jerry n the dead i enjoy the stories you know so thanks so much to all u heads out there for the trip........
L can't hold a candle to Jerry, it's just merely hero worship which is fine. The JGB gave Jerry the outlet he needed to let loose from the Dead, especially at the time that Bitch Donna was in the band. Kahn is just a KILLER bass player~!
Ozzie Ahlers is the shit. anyone who hasnt heard the "After Midnight" show from '80 needs to purchase it in the next 30 minutes from reading this comment.
this was the version from which i first learned this song, back in 1981, from a wnew broadcast, which i lost 20 years ago. nice to hear it again, thanks
I still get goose bumps and a bit choked up singing along with this one, even after all these years when he says " I was proud to be his friend" Mighty fine!!!
Folks.....This is a longtime Bluegrass/folkI favorite, not GD music, nor JGB original. it i, however, testament to Jerry's roots...and a fantastic song to boot....Long Live JG in heart and soul
