  • wow. thx.

  • wow.

  • Alison Krauss made this song come alive with the nitty gritty dirt band.

  • @joemorse100 Just watched her version. Good, for sure; but different. I think I would still rather hang with Jerry's version.

  • this is such a good sounding version

  • That's the pinnacle... Jerry moves me like no other... the range of emotions I feel in his music... My god, to feel things so deeply... a blessing. I've heard so much of his music, but never a funky version of catfish john. There are still GD songs i've never heard... Dios mio. Thank you Jerry!

  • Back in the day we would bitch and moan a little for the opening of how sweet it is >catfish john but some how by the end of catfish john we would be smiling from ear to ear..I remember walking out of the late show this night and it was snowing heavy going down the turnpike it seemed like i could count every snowflake that hit the windshield,i wonder if it had something to do with those thick orange gels we ate?

  • That second solo just kills me. What a great song.

  • Church.

  • Does this song read like "Huckleberry Finn" to anyone?

  • @alexpetro27 astute observation. I see it as a kind of reconstruction era song; the lyrics say "born a slave" as if to say he's a slave no longer. I imagine some old black man emancipated but homeless, living off the fat of the land, fishing up catfish from the Louisiana delta. The parents warn their little boy to never approach the negro but the child spends all his time with him anyhow.

  • So funky!

  • funky jerry,,.,..,.,..,.,.tasty stuff!!!

  • I love that Dripping guitar sound sooooo much!

  • Awsome Thank you!!

  • This is absolutely phenomenal, and with tomorrow being Jerry's birthday....he has been so, so sorely missed.

  • best part about JGB....no bobby!

  • My god i cant believe this doesnt have more views! Great and Thanks!

  • ENJOY MY ART.

  • Still walking in his footsteps after all these years...

  • Amazing......A unique blend of guitar pop. i immediately recognize Jerry.

  • Anyone familiar with the 1977 Illinois verson at a college where there's some backfeed around "cotton fields, was white as snow"?

  • love you jerry... wish i was 18 in 1965 all the way to 1995 and was in the first row in front of jerr.... whether he was on the right side or left. absolute master guitarist.... he is what made me want to pick up the instrument.

  • Thank you Jerry

  • love this song~love Jerry Garcia~peace love and gratitude

  • beee you teee full!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i used to love to see the garcia band in this era! i miss donna jean on back-up vocals; song doesn't sound right to me without her soulful addition at the refrain, and though i love jerry's voice, especially on ballads, he needs her on this particular song......what a great song and what a cool cat.

  • Total psychedelic swamp funk. Icredible feel. Man, any slower and they'd be going backwards!

  • good stuff. thank you kindly

  • Pure psychedelic swamp funk is what this be, hoot6theyre. Only Jerry.

  • This is Simply Amazing

  • I discovered Jerry garcia late in life !

  • what kind of music is this????

  • Nowadays, it is called 'jam music', but it has always been here.

    I hope you enjoy it.

  • @ratdog778 nice name.. Love Bobby :)

  • jerry music ... thank you, jerry!

  • @hoot6theyre jerry garcia music

  • exactly... enjoy !

  • @hoot6theyre Great comment hoot. The band itself probably couldn't have answered your question. They just did it. we all just listened.

  • @hoot6theyre I like to think of it as the best kind ; )

  • @hoot6theyre Its know to some folks as the Grateful Dead's music. Its a blend of different styles. I like to call it Country-Funk-ganja music.

  • @hoot6theyre The original was a straight up country/bluegrass song from the early 70's. I would say Jerry's take is sort of a slow reggae-rock version. Whatever you want to call it, it's unmistakeably Jerry.

  • @dershed

he played it like a bluegrass tune with old and in the way in 73

  • @hoot6theyre good music!

  • @gratethis music sucks fucking hippy loser's fulpanic5th

  • @TheKrowProductions then why are you watching the vid?

  • @TheKrowProductions

this music is for intelligent people -you dont get it so.......

  • @hoot6theyre REAL music. from the heart. doesnt need a silly tag line

  • this is incredible !

  • Classic Jerry --!!...that sweet, lilting sound.. ..notes....rippling down your body on a Full Moon - by the Catalyst in Santa Cruz...amongst the begonias...sigh.....hahha!..man..the man opened up so much for me...music..literature....art..new ideas..adventure into the Great Unknown....Rest In Peace Jerry!...I think he taught me what it means to be truly human. Thanx for the vid!

  • right on.

  • @farsajjj you are an idiot if you need an artist to open your eye to anything think 4 yourself

  • Best catfish john performance I've ever seen !!! Jerry and Grateful dead never fail to please me :)...

  • Comment removed

  • wheres teh h3tty catfish johns you seen then?

  • Three bands and more at this period, Dead, JGB, and Old and in the Way, plus some with Merle Sauders. He owned the Bay Area. Glad to hear a craftsman. Looks like somebody used a Sony Port-a-pack (about seven pounds of camera and twenty-five for the recorder) to video and got too close to some electronics, those things were just sensitive.

  • @mcrafarm BRO I AM PRETTY SURE THAT THERE WAS NO LEGION OR ANY OLD AND IN THE WAY GOING ON AT THIS TIME MAINLY BECAUSE OLD AND IN THE WAY ONLY PLAYED A HANDFUL OF SHOWS "73 AND JERRY WAS NOT PLAYING WITH MERL AT THIS TIME. BUT IT WAS WISHFUL THINKING FOR SURE.

  • Jerry sweet Jerry how do we miss his sweet soul!!! Excellnt posting!! Many thanx

  • i love the sound of jerrys mutron pedal the studio outtake of this song on terrapin station from the beyond description boxset is also excellent definately worth a listen

  • Brilliant! Thank you :)

  • actually you both are right. i would say the keys also have a squishy sound also. around the 6:00 in the key solo is pretty squshy. SQUISH ON!

  • Love the squishy sound on the keys!!!

  • thats his GUITAR DUMBo........signature Charlie Brown Parents BWAH BWAH BWAH!!! LOVE it man...

  • Momma Said Don't Go Near That River! Ahhhh!!!!!!!!!

  • poor Jerry, his music is ever so wonderful and exhilarating although his health was constantly put on the backburner due to his pending addiction. rest in peace jerry.

  • enjoyed the song so much ive listened to it twice and as much as i listen to jerry n the dead i enjoy the stories you know so thanks so much to all u heads out there for the trip........

  • dam jerry sounds grate,ty for the post....

  • Sweet, sweet, tweet, music! I miss jerry and john and will forever enjoy this musica.

  • Jerry is an avatar

  • especially good after catchin' some cats on the river...dig.

  • Which one is Jerry?

  • Just in case you're not joking... the guy singing with the beard and glasses

  • L can't hold a candle to Jerry, it's just merely hero worship which is fine. The JGB gave Jerry the outlet he needed to let loose from the Dead, especially at the time that Bitch Donna was in the band. Kahn is just a KILLER bass player~!

  • Absolutely filthy

  • I second that...

  • +1 Donveill

  • Jerry sounds just nasty in this. I wonder why this never made it into the Grateful Dead's repertoire.

  • because jerry liked it too much

  • Jerry as as broad in his range as he was deep. The best!

  • you suck if you dont like this...eat some L and get back to me.

Lets see Allison Krause play a guitar like Jerry.

  • why does L have to be involved.............if you cant enjoy this music without L, then you are twisted

  • i can enjoy music without it, but this music was designed for it man

  • someone here has not taste and can't recognize genius when he sees it

  • Started seeing the Dead and Jerry Band in 1980. Missed this by months, but never missed another Garcia show at the Capitol. These were the Daze.

    Thanks

  • Was there.

  • no shit, this jam gives me electric shocks in my spine when i listen to it, it almost compels you to move

  • so good

  • The best catfish john rec ever.........ever.

  • hell yea man... listen every day

  • garcia en fuego! Burnin solo(s)

  • Wonderfull!!!

Great to see Jerry in good health- he seems to be having a good time.

    Thanks for posting!!!!!!

  • it looked like jerry was working out some back then...his arms are pretty big

  • Ethan? Did you have a gf named Lisa back in the 80's in the bay Area/Santa Cruz? Friend of Ignatz,Stuart,Turtle,Red,Austin etc.,etc.?..

  • Grate video!!!

    Be good Family...

    KyndestKid

  • Ozzie Ahlers is the shit. anyone who hasnt heard the "After Midnight" show from '80 needs to purchase it in the next 30 minutes from reading this comment.

  • Great audio (for YT).

  • this was the version from which i first learned this song, back in 1981, from a wnew broadcast, which i lost 20 years ago. nice to hear it again, thanks

  • I still get goose bumps and a bit choked up singing along with this one, even after all these years when he says " I was proud to be his friend" Mighty fine!!!

  • thank you, juiceman! THANK YOU, JERRY!!!!

  • Folks.....This is a longtime Bluegrass/folkI favorite, not GD music, nor JGB original. it i, however, testament to Jerry's roots...and a fantastic song to boot....Long Live JG in heart and soul

  • Its too bad that alot of people cant see the genius of this guy...he's the greatest musician of all time...and its not even close

  • bingo

  • im not sure what album it was but he played it with the dead with a lot quicker tempo .......pure Grateful Dead

    :]

  • are you for real, you so cool dead encyclopedia

how can you think of ANYTHING else when this is playin ,sooooo beautiful jerry garcia it touched me i couldnt ask for more....except maybe the tempo...pure gratefuldead lies within the soal of the music or pls.define pure gd for mr so i can know!!!

  • The Dead never recorded Catfish John. This is the way Jerry always played it with JGB. You may be thinking of the bluegrass version he did with Old & In the Way, one of his many lesser known bluegrass projects.

  • it was on a GD cd

  • Recorded in fall '76 theres a studio outtake on the Beyond Description Terrapin Station remastered album as an extra.. the tempo is faster, and probably the best version i've heard

  • Born a slave

    in the town of Vicksburg

    Traded for a chestnut mare

    Lord, he never

    spoke in anger

    Though his load

    was hard to bear

  • Where the sweet
