brentford fucking brentford i got 31 goals in 22 games local league so i'd score against them fo real barnes should of at least 6 against a shite 3rd division side then
Spurs fan here....when i first started following football in the late 80's/early 90's, Whenever we played Liverpool, i used to pray Barnes wasn't on the team sheet....he was that good..
For a few seasons, there was no one on the planet to come close to Digger. Anfield legend. I was there that day - we won 4-0 and the Brentford fans had inflatable Bees.
John Barnes was different class for the team Kenny re-built 87 onwards - I was on the Kop for this one, I think we won 4-0. He was just so far better than anyone else in the country, just a shame he was usually average for England....that said, he was marked out of games at international level.
@kopites786 For sure man, John Barnes lit up my childhood, if only he could have played in europe along with Beardsley and Aldridge etc led by King Kenny.
Hell, no way am I anti-Liverpool. I LOVE THE CLUB. Been supporting Liverpool from the moment I could speak. Not anti-Liverpool at all. Just very bitter over the way Barnes and other black players where treated back then.
Indeed. And that's why, if Brentford had won that match, or if Hull had held their lead against Liverpool in the previous round, American football might well now be more popular in England than association football.
That comment is so true. I am a big Liverpool fan, but the racist treatment of black player at Anfield and Goodison was an absolute disgrace. I remember well, the horrific abuse dished out to Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunnigham, Johh Barnes {yes, the very same player} and other fantastic black players of that generation. And when the abuse of Barnes happened when the Everton 'supporters' where throwing bananas at him, showed Liverpool up for what it really was...a racist city.
@theglitterband At the time yes it was, i know a chap that was at uni at the time (late 80's) and it was tough for him. However, i spent 4 amazing years in Liverpool and still go now to watch the redmen, i love the place and the ppl are largely great.
haha funny, my Dad supports Brentford so I do and I support Liverpool as well 4 the prem, and theres like some connection in my family with john barnes on both sides of the family (not incest shit or something LOL)
Barne is a wonderful player. Non only one of the best in England history but also in the world. He had many qualities (technique, strenght and fantasy). Superb player. I wanted see him played in Italy. But this is not happened for delight of fans of Liverpol that will love Barnes for ever. Bye.
Dear oh dear, Mark Lovell, did you have BITTER LEMONS for breakfast, lunch and dinner???
Your comment re: not fulfilling his England potential granted, but even though he didn't he was still picked AND he scored one of the best goals an English player has ever scored in an England shirt (vs. Brazil).
As for your comments regarding his mangement etc, irrelevant!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
big deal, so he scored against the mighty bees, who were in the 3rd division at the time. Barnes very rarely played to his full potential for England, which is partly why people with long memories like me don't really rate him.....and as for managing, well, you only have to look at the ballsup he made at Celtic......and his tv presentation is lifeless and dull.......
He was definatley the greatest, He could take on players with ease score solo goals, shoot and score with both feet with precision and his crosses were just unbeleavable
John Barnes was just like magician in that Liverpool midfield, everytime he got the ball, you just knew he was gonna produce that bit of magic.

gerrards a different type of player to Barnes
If he played in the modern game he'd be better than Ronaldo & Messi

Out of interest Mark, in the same era, at his level, who was a better left winger/forward than him?
And out of interest, if he's not as goos as I make him out, how could he have one Footballer of the year TWICE??

Dear oh dear Mark Lovell. Do you have BITTER LEMONS for breakfast, lunch, and dinner??
Granted, he never fulfilled his potential for England, but at club level, he was undisputed!!
You don't win Footballer of the Year by a fluke.
My guess is whatever team you currently support didn't have a class player like John Barnes, footballer of the year in the squad.
Enjoy your bitter lemon!!
Barnes, you're a left wing legend!!!
