Too bad Tamiya didn't have a A3 suspension with the narrower vertical voultee spring suspensinion unlike your model of the "Easy Eight" with it"s wider and lower ground pressure horizontal voulte spring suspension. Still a nice job though! Gunner, D33 1-37AR. 1st AD, Desert Storm 1991 and avid armored fighting vehicle recognition nut. "Can't take it back after you pull the trigger!"
The .50 ammunition box for the machine gun on the top of the turret is 'open' in the movie, like you can 'see' the slugs through it. And the tank is so much dirty on the side, in the movie. But... those insignificants details apart, This is excellent and awesome work here, thanks you from my heart, from one of the best fan of this great movie :)
In the movie Oddball added on a piece of pipe to the end of the barrel "so like the krauts might think its a 90mm" ! "Our engines have been modified by our mechanical genius here Moriority so there just as fast in reverse as in forward" . "Ya see we like to think we can get out of trouble faster than we can get into it" ! "Im just soaking up some wine an cheese and picking up some rays man" . "I just fix em I dont know what makes em work" ! "Definately an anti social type" .
They were actually M4-A3 shermans sent to Yugoslavia as Lend Lease equipment under an agreement at the end of WW@ that lasted until 1948 They and jeeps and half tracks were pristine and had never been used until this movie. Several M-10 tank destroyers have recently come back to the USA from there for restoration
The tanks in the movie were M4A3E4s from the Korean War. THese were retrofits to put a 76.2mm M1 gun in the turret that once housed the 75mm M3. During WWII this was seen as impractical and a new turret was adopted, but in Korea there was a rush to get tanks in theater so Japanese occupation vehicles were retrofitted as such and shipped over.
Oddball's Sherman wasn't a firefly type was it? I know this model is one, but I often wondered, since it'd be near impossible for a regular sherman to take on a Tiger and survive.
well it could if its luck was as good as it was in the movie, the only way to kill a tiger with a Sherman is up the ass and they kept getting the tigers with their ass's to them. The tigers wouldn't have a chance if it played out like it did.
thats also why shermans were always in 4s as 3 could be used as decoys while the 4th could go for the kill, unfortunatly this type of manover did result in a lot of soldiers losing their lives also a sherman firefly is one of the last tanks you wanted to be in during a firefight as it was a top threat to the tigers so they always shot that one first
ya, it was a risky tactical move that was stupid in so many ways. for one it resulted in many lives and expensive military equipment being destroyed to only take out one or two targets. It usually worked but you would think that they would of just bombed the shit out of the tank or brought in some heaver equipment to do the job. They where very lucky in the movie tho that hardly anybody died.
ya, it was a risky tactical move that was stupid in so many ways. for one it resulted in many lives and expensive military equipment being destroyed to only take out one or two targets. It usually worked but you would think that they would of just bombed the shit out of the tank or brought in some heaver equipment to do the job. They where very lucky in the movie tho that hardly anybody died.
also the tigers wernt the most reliable tank which fell into the allied hands as they had a habit of engine failiure which meant that the turret could only work for about 30 mins before it run out of juice
ya they where good for quick tactical movements or just there to scare the shit out of allied troops, even tho the gun was bad and the engine sucked it was still a deadly and dangerous target for them with their weaker and less dangerous armour.
the gun was good in it and the tank was designed for it but unfortunatly it gives to much recoil, and theres recollections of tigers just having to be destroyed on their first mission because they used the same engine that was in the panzer 4 and it was only designed to move about 40 ton and the tiger weighed in at almost 60
i tried looking there to try and find where i got the pictures, but i've had no luck! I vaguely remember putting in searches for Oddballs Sherman, Sherman tank etc, i eventually found a site that had loads of pics on it that were good for reference etc...

Wasn't the barrel a mock up? If so how was it able to fire?

Barrel is correct. The Shermans used for Kelly's Heroes were Israeli modified to use the longer 105 mm gun from a British Centurion tank.
