As far as an incentive for your "affiliates", perhaps something along the lines of you "featuring" a recent project or even an older video from one of your affiliates at the end of each weekly update. So say I'm an affiliate, I'd submit a link to some of my work and if you pick me that week, you'd just throw a link in the Info or maybe an annotation at the end. Just a thought.
about the comment on competition on youtube, just goes to show you that people are just selfish any more. That's why we love you. You're a very humble, & giving person! That's what makes America great, is helping one another. Keep up the great work!
watch this channel and learn to make films.the techniques used get 90percent of people further and into a career and wouldnt you want tht.this world needs entertainment ..so check out this channel!
Concerning the PVC cap as a stage for the camera rig: a big washer with a small hole might do the trick instead. It's just easier to lose when the camera isn't mounted :P
I use the Audio-Technica ATR-3350 as my primary lav. I keep one of the Radio Shack models as a backup or secondary if I need to mic two people. I also picked up a dual mono to stereo adapter from Radio Shack. It allows me to run both mono lav mics into my Zoom H1 on separate channels. I can then split them and convert both to stereo in post.
hey scott! thanks for answering my question but the end cap im reffering to has a flat top its not round! also you say my user like jesslake but jesslayc is how its spelled :D
I was at my local Walmart this weekend and saw they had clamp lights just like the ones you have for like $6.50 or so. So Walmart is a good place to check for them as well.
Hey, about the affiliate scheme I don't know if the first look is really a great incentive. I mean, I'm a bit late to this video and I'll probably be working when the next one comes out. It would probably mean more if you gave shout outs and linked to the people who helped promote your videos, maybe help build a community of filmmakers and gearheads.
@Laochri my suggestion would be actually mounting the monitor to your wrist its something I've been thinking about doing lately and would lessen the problems of mounting on the stabilizer.
For the grips- Back in my BMX days, we used to add some liquid dishwashing soap to a bowl of warm water and soak the grips. Soak them for 10 sec, pull them out, slid them on. Let them dry and they'll never move. :)
on the computer question video card is important and needs to be compatible with the editing package. Check out the minimum hardware requirements over at adobe cs5/avid etc.
Oh and if you are really keen and want to get into color grading then head over to red gian t and get an idea of minimum requirements for grading.
In general; core i5 with half decent graphics card (e.g. nvidia gtx range) will nail most prosumer tasks.
Just looking at the comments on this video, I'd say a good incentive would be a weekly "youtube spotlight" of sorts. Where you advertise channels/websites that have heavily promoted the show. :)
Use Hairspray! The oldest trick in the book to get the bikegrips on your rigs! It'll slide on, then dry sticky! Oil will keep your grips sliding foreva.
@Knoptop Also, when I was a kid (don't ask) we would just use some soapy water to get our grips on our handle bars. Works great (and I used that on my DIY shoulder rig). Wait....I think I built the shoulder rig from either Frugal or Knoptop. :) Thanks!
hey guys i am a young film maker who has only 37 subs and think it would be great to get more views and subscribers. Consider visiting my channel and if you like what you see then feel free to sub
I agree on the youtube traffice comment 100%. Youtube is huge and who honestly doesn't watch multiple video tech/DIY shows.. I think i watch like 4 myself. People are just being greedy.
Sell complete kits of pre-drilled etc. DIY stuff? I would be willing to buy one because in the UK it's really hard to find all these parts and they're usually really expensive. Especially the Frugal Floater. No-where, literally no-where, sells gimballs of any sort. I would also like to help in anyway I can, send me a thing at alexforey . com / contact for anything I could do.
Surprisingly you pronounced my user name close, It's Lay-oc-ree. Thanks for your in put. The reason I thought about the field monitor, was I thought it would be easier to film sports events (my nephew's Basketball games). I would be looking down and paying attention to what I am doing, instead of watching the game.
The monitor will have to wait, but I will try the duel Macro Rail Slider. I will post what I come up with.
Marketing is never easy - especially when it's for free. People value "free" things differently than paid. A couple suggestions: 1) get others to post your videos on social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) using the Share link. 2) Use a mailing list like mailchimp or others that are free. 3) make use of "RSS" feeds in blogs. 4) create groups on social media sites like LinkedIn and invite people to join. 5) charge for your videos. 6) remind people to repost, share, and relink constantly.
Hey another great episode. Similar to a comment below mine, I usually tell people about your videos when I get questions in my youtube inbox about diy stuff. I had an idea as well, maybe you could upload another series once a week, just showing some of the short films that have been submitted to the frugal filmmaker over the week, so instead of just showing how to build equipment for making films, I think you should show some of the films that have been made using the equipment, just an idea :)
I already post a link to your show on facebook, cause hey, it's awesome so people should watch it, but one thing I found to help out with getting subscribers, is to go to other blogs that are related to your subject and sending a link to the blog owner. Usually people who have the blog with followers are looking for things to put on their blog that would intrest them and their followers. If you were to find 10 film/camera/DIY blogs with 100 to a 1,000 followers, you could really rack up the view
I try to promote your channel and stuff anyway but, as someone that would love to get more traffic to my channel it would be cool if you maybe had a clip of the week or something like that to drive people to your affiliates (aka minions).

You mention doing projects for school sometimes. If it's not too personal, which school do you attend and what's your opinion of their program?

Growning this show:
Run Competions, for built kits, or assembled kits, or other things may help.
Sell Books, eBooks of Plans, (eBay, Amazon), etc...
If something is woking, your channel, don't change what you are doing, or you could loose subs.
