  • English off-road cycling pioneer Geoff Apps made a 700c cross country bicycle back in 1981 using 47mm wide snow tires from Finland. Apps also sent tires to Gary Fisher for evaluation. I have seen a letter from Kelly and Fisher dated 1/18/1981 that asks if more tires can be sent. Several sources indicate that NorCal frame builders built bikes using these difficult to obtain Finnish tires but Gary makes no mention of this. Surely these early bigger wheel bikes must have inspired Fisher's 29er?

  • Truly the biggest load of crap. Fisher did not come up with the 29" bike. Bruce Gordon, Wes Williams, Joe Murray, Mark Slate and Bob Poor did. A special nod needs to go to Steve Potts for making Fisher's original prototype and for OX Brand for being the first 29" only company. When Bruce Gordon decided to sideline the fat tired project Wes Williams forced the industry to adopt the new wheel size. Fisher's contribution was producing the bikes in big numbers, that's it.

  • Gary is going crazy!

  • gary just sold his soul to " EL DIABLO"

  • i have one of those

  • to me it feels like there are no differences between a 29er and 26er. i have both and i take them out to the local trail and the ride still is the same for me. i think the only real difference is is the traction

  • Well comfort is the most important issue for me, and most riders I bet. So this is a good idea. But I don't think its the best for everone. Some will benefit fromfaster acceleration, and smaller wheels will be lighter. Some will feel the added wind drag is a problem on open spaces. Its noticable on road bikes, I have 16" and 26" and 700c bikes to compare with, and smaller is better in that regard. Still personal riding style will vary. I'm glad to have the option...gimme more of that!

  • I got a 29er after A-B against comparable 26er. Just felt more comfortable, sturdy and I like the more upright riding position I get....I do think they are ugly though.

  • I own a Kona Abra Cadabra and the Kona King kahuna(29er)I love both bikes but for different purposes.29er's are great for climbing and daily comuting and they do cover more ground easily but they will never be my choice for descents or jumping because they feel so heavy and big and while in the air they feel like huge sails catching the wind and also not easy to handle. So when i really wanna have fun i will choose my 26 inch wheel every time over any 29er !!!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone know anything about the Mongoose Deception 29er at walmart.

  • @ZachmanTheFisherman One caught my eye the other day too. I thought for 200 bucks, it might not be bad, but I think I would rather save my money and apply it to a bike with high quality components. I did not give it a test ride, so I don't actually know.

  • It suits the bigger horsepower guys, doubt the little light weight guys would get as much advantage, oh and by horsepower i dont mean fat people...

  • The future of MTB looks bleak...

  • I have a 29er and I like it, but the hype is off the charts. No real world advantages over the 26" wheel.

  • @RBK855 I have to disagree, I have a 29er GF and well I like it way better than my same price Merida TFS XC 500. I did have to change some components but that's not the point. 29ers should be the future of MTB

  • I just bought my first 29er. Not a GF or anything, but it works really well for me. I actually like it quite a bit, probably will never go back to a 26.

  • The 29er are good. I would love to ride one. It can be bought cheaply.

  • hi i wish i could afford one

  • balls

  • I LOVE MY TASSAJARA GENESIS 2007 MTB

  • Bought a 29er last summer,08. Any one in the market for a bike should take a test ride on one of these. I was away from riding for over a decade so this was new to me- something so simple is really amazing technology. From the frame to the components the Gary Fisher brand has really proved itself to me. Best riding wishes.
