Well, even if you are East African, Cuban music came from the african slaves in cuba, so we are connected. Cuban music is a mixture of african and Spaniard, and the big band sound. You may not have latin ancestry in you but cubans have african ancestry in them.
@Dina1962 ,everything about music came from africa 100%100. cubans, puertorrican, dominicans, colombians, venezuelans, panamenias, peru, hunduras and usa...AFRO-HUMANS.
@williebori1 The lenguage is from Spain, some of the instrument are European, Hermano bori no mescles los frijoles con el arroz, esto es musica criolla cubana (made in Cuba)
Esta bien el comentario, pero en esta epoca que fue aproximadamente en el 1947, Miguelito que era un bravo de verdad no sonaba tanto como la orquesta de Frank Machito Grillo.
I point out, Machito Band, in my article..'Zaragemca's bongos,Congas, timbales and Bata'..Available in the internet..(Gerry Zaragemca is a world's known authority in Afrocuban Percussion and Music).
Ok. This is great! That's my father! The great Carlos Vidal top left playing the conga drum! Thank God for Youtube! Mario if you put this on, thank you. My name is Brian Vidal. Please call I would love to talk to you or anyone who knew of my father.
I tried to send this before but I hadn't confirmed my e-mail addres so I don't know if it went through. I was wondering if you were by any chance related to Anselmo Vidal of NYC? I was in the army with him in 1958 and he was a timbales player in a band called Conjunto La Vid. We were good buddies but got out of touch when we got out.
Hello Frank. I know that My father had a son in New York. I am not clear on his name however. Bernardo I think. Is he Cuban? What was his age back then? That would help me because my father arrived in NYC in 1943. that would have had my father's age at 29 years old. The age would work. He was very close to Chano Pozo as well. This could be a chance that they are related if he is. I will dig the name up on a search.talk to you soon
I found a site about some band that Anselmo Vidal Jr. lead in a concert benefit or something. I think it was him because he is described as being 72 and 5'2". I was 18 when I met him in 1958 so that would be right. It didn't say how to look him up. Maybe he is a relative of yours.
I forgot to answer a couple of the questions you asked. According to the site Anselmo was brought to NYC from Aquadilla PR when he was nine. He would have been born in 1935 or 1936. People usually got drafted into the Army at 23. I had volunteered for the draft so I was 18.
