'The Mason Williams Phonograph Record', with 'Classical Gas', is available on CD. . .i grabbed a copy a while back. . .'Classical Gas' was a big song during my junior-senior years of high school. . .
The Grieg reference at 6:30 is funny because it's a whole step too low--recalling what he said inspired his Smothers Brothers theme; a chord too low that he had to slide up. I would have slid it up to A minor in the middle and dropped it back to G at the end. It would have sounded cool, but everybody isn't as smart as me. ;-)
Gosh, I can remember Mason Williams and his music, the Smothers Brothers , Peter, Paul and Mary...from my childhood. Loved this time... some amazing music and humor!! :)
Entertaining as always, We LOVE Mason Williams. The best sense of humor in songwriting in ages. What a shame Tom and Dick weren't there to enjoy this!
From his CD "Music, 1968 - 1971" These are songs written by him on that CD -- Classical Gas (guitar only version), Sunflower, Saturday Night at the World (a fave), $13 Stella, Long Time Blues, Here Am I, Smothers Brothers Theme, The Last Great Waltz (humor), Baroque-a-Nova (attempt to recreate CG hit), Cowboy Buckaroo, La Chanson De Claudine, Bucko's Memoirs (humor), A Major Thang (fun), Largo De Luxe, Godsend, Train Ride in G (moves along), Life Song -- Plus 5 songs written by others.
This reminds me a baseball team we had in Montreal in the 80s who used a handsaw as a baseball bat. They actualy played a whole game with hammers and tools.
I have been trying to find the clip of Mason and the pictures going while he was playing Classical Gas on the SB show. Anyone know where it might be located?
The one I am looking for has the old masters paintings flashing on the screen as he plays..the clip from the SB show. Thanks for trying though, I do love anything Mason Williams does.
When I was a youngster, 8th grade I think, I bought an album called, "The Mason Williams Ear Show." Mr. Williams, you've kicked my eardrums into tomorrow ever since. I bought that LP in a PX store in Garmisch. That's in Germany, for those who might remember. A few years later, I found a book called "The Mason Williams Reading Matter." Pretty sure it's out of print. Why! Bring this book back! Please!!!
"Those Were the Days" was a hit by Mary Hopkin in 1968 and at the time it was rumored that she was Paul McCartney's girlfriend.
Interestingly Cream had a song "Those Were the Day's" on Wheels of Fire (1968) that was a completely different song.
Mason William's had a hit with Classical Gas (1968) and in 3 minutes it would show pictures that captured the nations history. Very inspiring - then Dick Nixon took over.
My husband is a protege of Mason's. Check out his stuff. Search for Sinai 48 on youtube, and also itunes, amazon and wherever else you can search! My husband also does an AMAZING version of Gas.
oh yeah!Classical Gas to Those Were the Days Hes timeless, yes forever young. This version esp now WILL get more play, very applicaple today.Yeah rock on Mason!
Edgonette: Please, please, please tell me where you obtained a copy of the Mason Williams Phonograph record. I had one about 30 years ago and treasured it. Lost it and can't find another.
There are several clips of Esther and Abi Ofarim singing Cinderella/Rockafella and Wanderlove (one of my favorites of his). They recorded several of his songs.
I had no idea that even his whistling was Great! :D What a talent!

What's the riff the bass plays around 5:25? After the "We embraced the 60s revolution" line.
