During the Scottish Open last year Jack was in a small tea shop in Helensburgh. He was quickly recognised and the word went round. He did not refuse one autograph or photo and did not resent the intrusion on his privacy. In a world where lesser "stars" go around protected by security staff, Jack was a true star and a perfect gentleman.
coming in second to tom watson when you're 42 isn't really losing... and losing to tom watson because he chips in a 1 in a 100 shot (and i mean 1 in 100 for tom watson) isn't really losing either. so shut up tiger fans about "tiger needing to lose more to make his competition look better" dicks.
I remember when I was watching Jack on the 18th hole and my sister came downstairs because she wanted to watch Neighbours on the telly. I told her we were watching history unfold. Then shortly after- Jack holed the putt.
Like many golf fans, I was hoping Jack would have made the cut. However, if it meant doing so at the expense of this grreat finish (albeit on Friday), I'm ironically glad he did not. One of the greatest moments from the greatest ever.
I love Jack!!! I am looking for his last round coverage at St. Andrew's especially when he crosses over the bridge....Can anyone help me? Thanks and good luck on the links.
maurice2708 r u out of ur mind. do u no this is the mecca of golf lol. you probaly play at your local pitch and putt is there a difference between that and st andrews? you decide for uour self!
get a grip numb nuts! seve was quality but really never won nearly as much as jack! hmmm have not really heard the debate on tv about tiger or seve????with coments like that i guess your off +2!!! not lol
Jack is the greatest golfer of ALL TIME. Besides winning 18 professional Major Championships, he finish second a record 19 times. Look at his competition & the number of majors they won:
You make excellent points and I totally agree with you. I'm so sick of Tiger being compared to Jack. Different time and better golfers in Jacks period in time. Mr. Nicklaus was not only a great golfer, but very down to earth and humble, something Tiger has no idea how to be. Thanks for your post and stats.
So ... Tiger needs to lose a bit more in order to make his competition look better so that you would think he was a better golfer. Riiiigggghhhtttt ....
@knesisand Why do people bring up the "competition?"
It doesn't matter who else is playing in a tournament. You're not playing THEM, you're playing against par. There have been four players who have realized that, and guess what, they are the best players of their era.
Bobby Jones
Ben Hogan
Jack Nicklaus
Tiger Woods
Because of the advances in technology, you can't compare them. It's easier to compare players in a certain "era," but not over the entire lifetime of a sport.
i'll never forget watson waiting for his old foe and friend just off the eighteenth green with tears flowing. he understood the moment and history of what was happening.
i agree, barcabear722000. tiger's competition has been pale compared to nicklaus' - palmer, player, miller, watson - and many other solid contenders in between the forementioned. johnny miller has remarked that the above players would have taken on tiger - and beaten him alot more than he gets beat today.
thank you, elonepb, for substantiating my opinion. nicklaus won lots, of course, but not by "18, 15, 8, 6" over his competion. i'm not saying woods isn't a great golfer - he is - but palmer, player, watson were huge champions of the game. much more to contend with than mickelson, singh, etc. "illogical"? i don't think so.
To me though it was also the MANNER in which Nicklaus won them that made him great. Tiger hasn't always had that although I feel he does now. I don't really try and compare them, just try and enjoy both of them for what they are, outstanding athletes and human beings.
I think I was sitting on this wall too. I had sat up there on my own about an hour beforehand waiting. That guy in the blue cap MIGHT be me, but I couldn't quite tell.
If we're talking modern golf. Tiger hands down.
He's won 14 majors in 15 years span
The fastest ever. Not to mention the 2 year span
In another era... thats up for debate.
wow i just realized that comment is 4 years old!
Is opinion probably is changed now ;)

For me SEVE was the best value for money champion ever.
He put European golf on the map and was the 1st european to take it to the americans on there own turf in the majors and the ryder cup
.Without him many of the champions that followed wouldnt have had the belief that it was possible.
A flamboyant genius on the golf course and the main reason I started playing golf in the 1st place

As illogical of a statement as any. Tiger has been on track to beat every single one of golf's records, including Jack's, since a child.
Is Tiger winning by 1 stoke over this mediocre competition you are referring to? No, he wins by 18, 15, 8, 6.
He doesn't just dominate, he intimidates. One of the greatest champions of all sports of all times, and that's just Jack Nicklaus's opinion.
