@ftk924 It's usually a response to the mom becoming too stressed. Bothering her all the time to look at the sac can stress her out enough to eat it, so it's best to just leave her alone after she has laid.

And of course, just being hungry enough could cause her to eat it as well.

@Gaiacarra It mainly is because if there is some mold or bad eggs in it, it could spread to others, this way you can separate the bad eggs and save the good ones.
