He should have bought a current copy of Overstreet comic book price guide to check the prices of his father's comic books. Then sell it/auction it on eBay at its actual prices so he can make a profit (unless if he just wants get rid of it quickly). If there are some silver age/bronze age comics, send it to cgc for professional grading and sell it on eBay. The comic book stores or used book stores will only pay a lot less than what they're worth because they need to make a profit also.
If he already sold any for 50c (like it says on the side of the box) then he's already had the good ones cherry picked. My hot tip? X-Force #1- Now that's an investment! In about 20 years from now it will have doubled in value- up to almost 20c.
Probably the only thing worth any money in the collection was that Batman book. "A lonely place of dying" can go for like 15 to 30 bucks at most. Most of those books looked to be X-men books from the 90's, I bet that the dude had 5 copies of X-men #1 in there.
Pawn Stars does not rip anyone off, they overpay way too often these days. The customers are more often than not brain dead hillbilly's, but they have Chum and Corey working there so it all works out.
@TheGabrielMerida Pawnstars rips you off a lot but not in this case. From the comics I saw if the rest were similar to them, and assuming there's no hidden gems in the box that they didn't show I would only of offered that guy about $30 maybe 40.
@OfficerMickey1 i was pissed of when my mum destroyed one box of comics 21 years ago, ones that were 25 years old and worth a mint. 5 given to me by her own father, and rare as hens teeth
I would love to see Rick's face if the Nicholas Cage 9.6 copy of Action Comics #1 was brought into his shop, Not that any dealer would be dumb enough to take something like that to the pawners.
Rick "So what are you looking to get for this?"
"This is the highest grade of Action Comics #1 in existence, it just sold at auction for over two million dollars"
Rick "I'm going to have to ask you to come down on that price"
Rick states at the beginning that comics aren't nearly as cool/valuable as they were 15 years and how the market went straight down but then proceeds to shell out $70 for junk from that very time period. He even admitted it'll likely take about two years to move this lot. He should've passed on that one. This was a highly questionable decision.
A deal is a deal. If your to dumb to Google your swagger then you wouldn't know how to spend the money wisely anyway. I've actually seen these guys spend too much on plenty of stuff as well so who knows if this was to much or little.
Knowing a comic book dealer, and helping him out some, most comic books are pretty worthless - with the exception of the classics with major plot twists, special artists or appearance of new major characters (I.E. The appearance of the Haunted Tank).
Most of the books there came out during the late 80's-early 90's comic book boom. They were mass produced and they were sold in the millions. Sometimes the same collector bought 3-5 copies at a time thinking he can send his kid to college in 20 years. The collector who wants them already have them as they are easy to find. Hate to break it to you Rick, but you got screwed.
Omg, there was the first ever issue dedicated to batman in there, from 1940, lets hope for that guys sake it was a reprint, because if not he's just lost out on over $100,000
I can say from personal experience Superhero, Horror and Sci-Fi Golden age comics sell really well but War, Western and some other less collected genres usually only sell 70 to 80 percent BELOW price guide price.
$70 bucks? LOL...that was a STEAL...for the KID!!!! He had nothing but modern dreck. As another member wrote, that box is worth tops $25.00!!!! Great job at conning a pawn shop :)
Wow he knows nothing about comics...about how they were sent to ppl fighting in the war for something to read or the fact they were big into recycling back in the day and most comics were tossed into the recycling bins and back then they weren't mass produced like in the 90's.
He got a good deal.I have over 25,000 books, including every single book I was able to spot in this segment. When I take my books to comic shows, with people who are actually into this stuff,I still have a hard time moving anything at more than $2 a piece. That short box of sloppy bagged comics with hardly any boards would barely be worth 50 bucks at a convention.Unless there are some hidden gems among the books that they didn't show he lucked out.I'd gladly sell every short box I have for $70 each.
The guy with the bald head whos running the shop is talking absolute bullshit. Nowadays there are much more comic book based movies coming out than there has ever been before, the sucess of the recent Batman movies alone keeps the market strong and when the next Batman flick comes out it will increase once again.
If you walked into this Pawn shop with the gun that was used to shoot at Abe Lincholn, Egg head would say "Well, the priceless artifact market aint what it used to be, you know?"
I watch this show when it's on TV now and then, and I like the format of the show, but I really hate the way they rip people off. I understand that they have to make a profit or whatever, but I hate the attitude they have, they act like they are doing the customer a favour by buying their items. Their smug attitude pisses me off too. Although, I question the legitimacy of the episode contents sometimes, because there has been a few times when a guy could've got so much more if they looked it up.
omg, he said 150 bucks and still didnt want to do it and he easily could have looked up the prices of all of those and probably gotten wayyyyyyyy more just for one. The only thing i hate about this show is the fact that they rip people off beyond belief.
Just because someone cherished those items doesn't make them valuable to the next guy. They're running a business and taking a risk of not selling the stuff later.
@theotherfluffy Just my opinion, I don't think the Walking Dead will hold up over time. It's just the book of the moment. I do wish I had about 10 copies of it right now though, ha ha!
Everything goes in phases actually. I think comic books are making a good comeback. I almost enjoy reading a good copy of x-men or whatever I pick up than watching a movie or TV because if a comic book is drawn well and told well it tends to grab your imagination. I also love the artwork and colors or lack there of. Some do go for very big money and are just cool things to have to show friends who like it too I guess.
