@MingGuoLi Not all turrets can be upgunned. They have limitations in interior space. For example Pz-IV also couldn't be further upgunner than its later version. Putting bigger gun in same turret reduces elevation and depression angles. Bigger gun is also usually much heavier. 2-3tons of additional weight at 26t vehicle is too much and it will reduce its tactical mobility properties... which were the most important ones in medium tanks of WW II.
Point of such vehicles is that they are not actually a tank, but anti-tank artillery pieces placed on tracked chassis. It is a self-propelled artillery, and not a tank. And role of anti-tank artillery is the same in all armies of WW II.
They operate from ambushes in defence. In attack they fire-support tanks, while moving 200-300m behind them. And ISU-152 was used as a successful assault artillery in cities.
Regardless of some confusion on the ultimate performance of the D-10S, this was an awesome machine, probably in the class of the vaunted Jagdpanther....
SU means "Samokhodnaya Ustanovka". And it is short form of the official abbreviation SAU (Samokhodnaya Artilleriyskaya Ustanovka", which means Self-Propelled Gun and is equivalent to abbreviation SPG.
More russian propaganda. King tiger's maximum armour was 188mm. The penetration value of this canon was something like 160mm at 1000m. But why am I not surprised ?
@ivanlagrossemoule Usually I don't allow people spreading hate between countries and nations to post in my channel. And judging by your nickname you are just another russophobe and hater.
But I will leave this comment intact, because it is actually correct.
Saying that SU-100 could penetrate King Tiger at any distance and at any point of impact is clear exaggeration and doesn't represent the reality. They should say this phrase up to Tiger, excluding King Tiger.
"National documentaries are often biased" - This is true and it is true for every country. However, I have to say that my personal choice of "Voennoe Delo" series is because it is the most objective shows among other Russian shows of similar subject and maybe around the World too. Check some of their videos about foreign equipment.
However, as shown by test firing into the armored hull trophy "Tiger II", held in Kubinka, getting into the frontal armor 3-4 armor-piercing or high-explosive 100-mm shells from a distance of 500-1000 m resulted in the formation of cracks, chips and failure of welds, ultimately leads to the tank failure.
@BitnikGr Direct hit into the edges or joints of frontal armor plates from a distance of 500-600 meters led to through-penetration, but the 180-mm plate of the turret made the way only when fired at close range [87]. A similar frontal armor had self-propelled "Jagdtiger". 200-mm frontal armor of "Ferdinand" the D-10S did not break through, but from hitting into it from a distance of 1500 meters on the test the SPG is out of service due to formation of chips.
@BitnikGr (ie, the resulting secondary fragments of armor can quite effectively damage the crew and equipment by big weight of armor-piercing projectiles exceeding 15 kg). [88]. But anti-tank potential of D-10S during the war were not utilized fully because of lack of it today for those standards, armor-piercing shells for the Soviet tank and anti-tank guns were developed only in the postwar period, based on captured German ammunition [89].
@bestamerica How many "maus" tanks were built? 0? How it make it the best German tank???!!!
-
"king tiger can destroy any ussr tanks" - Just like IS-2 could destroy any Tiger at any distance.
Point is that Soviet medium tanks could be produced in tens of thousands and could go anywhere at any battlefield. Meanwhile German "wunder"-heavy tanks were braking all the time. Less than 50% of Tigers could reach battlefield without braking on their way. Unreliable can't be named as "the best".
This SU was used in 1967 and 1973 war by syria and egypt, and even in yougoslavian wars in 1990's. The gun is basically the same used after on T-54/55, and certainly one of the best gun ever made, on one of the best hull.
OMG they stole C&C Red Alert music!
R33Racer 2 weeks ago
@R33Racer If music is not copyrighted, then they didn't steel it. If they've paid for it, then they didn't steel it.
Correct expression is "OMG they USE C&C Red Alert music!" :)

Why not just put the 100mm gun on the T-34? What's the point of this turretless tank?

I've seen both the Su-100 and the Jagdpanther in a tank museum.
Su-100 is very low while the Jagdpanther is a huge wall of steel.
