I too am quite familiar with the law. I am a future judge advocate and current Law Student. The constitutional authority that the President possesses does not authorize him to take control of the troops and lead them into battle. It gives him the power to declare war, even that is quite limited. After the war is declared, power over actual operation (aside from very general strategic decisions) is vested in the military itself. Your conception of what Commander in chief entails is not accurate.
Okay. Here goes. First off Semper Phi/Fi is short for Semper Fidelis meaning "always faithful." This is the motto of the Marine Corps and was adopted by the 8th commandant in 1883. We adopted that on our own. Devil Dog is what you are thinking of. "Teufel Hunden" is what the Germans called Marines after we handed them their ass at the WWI battle of Belleau Wood. It is loosely translated into "Devil Dog." THAT one was given to us. Semper Fidelis is ours.
You know, I didn't know until just a few years ago that one source of the term "leatherneck" for Marines was due to the tie they wore around their neck!
I read it in a history book on Marines once. It said that when they wore a leather stock (or tie) around their neck to keep from getting their necks cut by a cutlass blade in battle. Have you heard of that?

Just a note of history---a stock is not a tie---it is a roughly 2-inch collar that was tied or buckled around the neck. It was commonly linen, but some units used leather.

My friend I am an officer in the Marine Corps. I have deployed into a forward combat area. Hence I am aware of what is involved in leading Marines. As a prior enlisted and now commissioned Marine officer, I am also KEENLY familiar with both ways in which one can acquire the title "Marine," as I have performed both of them. Just because the President makes extremely broad policy decisions regarding troop deployment does not suffice to qualify him as a "leader of Marines" in the true sense.

I too am quite familiar with the law. I am a future judge advocate and current Law Student. The constitutional authority that the President possesses does not authorize him to take control of the troops and lead them into battle. It gives him the power to declare war, even that is quite limited. After the war is declared, power over actual operation (aside from very general strategic decisions) is vested in the military itself. Your conception of what Commander in chief entails is not accurate.

Okay. Here goes. First off Semper Phi/Fi is short for Semper Fidelis meaning "always faithful." This is the motto of the Marine Corps and was adopted by the 8th commandant in 1883. We adopted that on our own. Devil Dog is what you are thinking of. "Teufel Hunden" is what the Germans called Marines after we handed them their ass at the WWI battle of Belleau Wood. It is loosely translated into "Devil Dog." THAT one was given to us. Semper Fidelis is ours.

You know, I didn't know until just a few years ago that one source of the term "leatherneck" for Marines was due to the tie they wore around their neck!
I read it in a history book on Marines once. It said that when they wore a leather stock (or tie) around their neck to keep from getting their necks cut by a cutlass blade in battle. Have you heard of that?
By the way, I wasn't a Marine, but my Dad was, and he died many years ago. I do thank all of you Marines for all you do out there!

Just a note of history---a stock is not a tie---it is a roughly 2-inch collar that was tied or buckled around the neck. It was commonly linen, but some units used leather.

My friend I am an officer in the Marine Corps. I have deployed into a forward combat area. Hence I am aware of what is involved in leading Marines. As a prior enlisted and now commissioned Marine officer, I am also KEENLY familiar with both ways in which one can acquire the title "Marine," as I have performed both of them. Just because the President makes extremely broad policy decisions regarding troop deployment does not suffice to qualify him as a "leader of Marines" in the true sense.

For the first time, more troops disapprove of the presidents han dling of the war than approve of it. Barely one-third of service members approve of the way the president is handling the war, ac cording to the 2006 Military Times Poll.
When the military was feeling most optimistic about the war — in 2004 — 83 percent of poll re spondents thought success in Iraq was likely. This year, that number has shrunk to 50 percent.

If you do your research, Obama's plans for Iraq aren't much different than Dubya's plans before Obama even took office. Bush signed papers to begin the withdrawal process before he left the white house. So what's the difference Ted?

Bush's announcement means that the U.S. will withdraw about 8,000 combat and support troops by February.
Bush said Tuesday that he would keep the U.S. force strength in Iraq largely intact until the next president takes over.

Not a fan of his, I just like to listen to all points of view, unlike those on the fringe of the right.
It was a fair election, at least the courts didn't have to get involved like they did in 2000. :)

So, maybe the reason they're so quiet in greeting Obama is because it's a formal event, they're playing "Hail to the Chief" and this is when Obama was going to lay out his Iraq plan.
What you DON'T see is after the event the Marines reaching out to shake his hand, take his picture and going nuts for him. Nice editing.

That doesn't matter. The military always gave Bush a warm welcome when he spoke to them in a crowded setting. The fact that the soldiers behind Obama didn't shout until right after he said Sempre Fi leads me to believe that they were told to do so.

The Marines that took pictures probably did so because they want to remember who to blame if their weapons get stripped from them. Obama is in support of government control of weapons.
