Don't feel too bad that electric vehicles haven't improved much.... for the most part, modern cars haven't improved very much in fuel efficiency either. In fact, some of the new 2010 cars have gotten worse! lol
Saw a Volt pre-production rolling down the street the other day. They're gearing up production as we speak for a November release. Can't wait to get one and put all this "Volt-hoax" stuff to bed.
I've been following the price of Lithium batteries out of China and the price of a LiFePo4 10ah 3.7v cell has fallen from around $200 to around $30 in the last three years. More range is simply more batteries and now that an 800v 90ah battery pack has fallen from $43,000 down to $6,500 we should be seeing an increase in home-builds.
I'm building an AC induction motor powered compact car with 180ah at 796v with a 200 mile range (inc regen) converted for less than $20k and has 160hp peak.
I think this is what people need to understand. The only progress that has been made on EVs is the sheer number of Press releases. If you went by them alone, you would think EVs numbered in the millions, rather than the 100's that actually exist. The fact that the most advanced relible and cost effetctive EV is the 1990's era Rav4 EV is telling, especially how toyota would like to pretend the Rav4 never happened. The dirty liquid fuels monolopy is basically intact and will prob stay that way.
Range extenders are the key to EVs. I suspect that Ford is looking at a pull behind rental trailer/range extender for the upcoming Electric version of the C-Max. While they could use all batteries, they could also use a generator.
I don't know if big auto makers are serious or not, but I was so disappointed, when last week Mitsubishi announced, that the price of the iMiEV was 35.000 British pounds = 40.000 EUR.
I was ready to buy a iMiEV licenced Citroen C-Zero this fall, but not at that price.
fucking retarded america no electric cars and no legalized marijuana wat a fucked up lame ass place to live fuck america this shit sux im going to canada
I bought a new car with the Cash for Clunkers, I would have bought an electric if they had one, "I can't afford much less even fit in a Tesla" So I ended up with a 5 speed manual Toyota Matrix. I know this is the last car I will ever buy so I plan on haveing as much fun as possible because in the future cars will only be for the wealthy and elite. So party on in your gas mobile now while you can!
Wouldn't you say all parties, GM, the Goverment, The Consumers/Buying Public, the Media, the Oil companies......All are at fault. The finger of blame really should be pointed at everybody for failing to look ahead. Even now their are Peak Deniers, a vast Public who is clueless on Peak Oil and I just don't even know what to say about the Goverment.
valhala56, I don't think you can blame the public for the failure of the EV1 and the other EVs because the advertising was so poor that the public didn't really know they were available. Also, the cars were only for lease. I really think it was the lack of marketing and availability that killed them by keeping demand for them low. If the public demanded them then they would have to be built, but the public has to see them to demand them.
@ndyt Well you are right about that to an extent, Toyota Prius has sold well, but the car is not an electric. The people who bought them "Prius" seem to be the small segment interested in ecology, the vast hordes are not, and some consider Prius buyers to be tree huggers.
valhala56, yes, and the 3rd leg of the EV1 problem was that it only had 2 seats. There is no demand for a car in the USA that only has 2 seats unless it is a sports car.
@ndyt, I think a guy in another comment here mentioned his Vectrix which I believe is a large electric scooter. Again I would be interested in one of those however the cost and financing is a problem. The Goverment gives no insentive to buy a Electric motorcyle over a gas motorcyle. So IMHO Electric is not going to make a substantial impact. Don't get me wrong I am 100% for it. I just see economicaly problematic.
Oh you poor babies. You want an EV that will do what
your daddy's car did, and it won't happen, future cars
are going to have to, first: Be used a LOT LESS, and
be a LOT LIGHTER and flimsier, and have MUCH
SMALLER motors, and REALLY SHORT ranges, and
NOT go very fast, and they're gonna cost you a small
fortune. They're lying to you, you know, what you're
gonna have to do is ride bicycles, and the next couple
generations are going to freeze in the dark, so buy
some thick sweaters for them!!!

You just like focusing the on the bad stuff.
Look at Nissan. They got the Leaf. Renault has the Fluence ZE and a few others.
Better Place eRogues are being used as taxis in Tokyo.
Stop promoting the bad side of EVs. Promote the good stuff.

Check out the background pic on my channel Doug, I think you'll get a kick out of it.
GM had an advanced EV1 Serial Plug-In Hybrid Concept, yet they refused to follow through with it.
I suspect the same fate for the Chevy Volt.

I mean 35 000 British pounds = 52 122 U.S. dollars. That's nearly the price of the Tesla Model S.
Model S looks like a bargain.
We need a competition and we need it fast!
