Nice truck. Mines a '77 as well. I also see you have the heavier duty hauling package with the campers special. That 4.10 in the rear really lets her have high torque in low gears. Does yours have a muncie transmission in it as well?
im doing an 80 2wd crew cab to 86 front clip and elec doors right now ,and... converting to 4x4 first off, have a donor truck!! yes frame has to be angle cut for newer bumper, wiper shafts are longer on square body, cowl has 1 fender hole on older, new has 4 for hinges, cowl has to be notched for cowl vent piece, for mounting, harness also for lights sliced into or swapped out,any Q&A im here...
@KuntryboyF150 It would but you wouldnt be able to use the year correct bumpers on the 86, the frames on the 73 to 79 are rolled in the front and 81 to 87 are angle cut. so you would have a non matching bumper
how does the truck do power wise with the 4 10 gears? im building a 84 3/4 ton chevy and im going with 6" suspension and 3" body lift with 38s. but im only running a fresh 355 not built up or anything.
@KuntryboyF150 I've done that swap a couple of times, and its pretty easy. You'll have to take the windshield cowl off because the 73-80 has the cowl built into the hood. You'll need fenders, hood, radiator support and you'll also need to change the windshield wiper legs that the arms slide onto because the 81-87's are longer and it will hit the hood on a 73-80 front clip.
Majorly awesome rig! curious about some stuff about it. What t-case are yall running? ratio of the case? what axles? looks like a dana 44 in front. you said the treads are 39's but what width? and finally, may I ask how much yall are into this build money wise. reason I'm asking is cause i have a truck, sittin on 38's with 6 inches of lift right now, but I wanna go a lil' bit bigger everywhere, i was thinking 12 inches and 40's or 42's
@darkstarking666 My husband says you can make it fit but the best is to find a small block 400 because it's ALOT of work to fit a big block in there. And yes, they are reliable...husband says they are 'damn near bulletproof'.....hope that helps.
@darkstarking i left out the 307 i cant remember when it was made but it was unpopular. The most popular bore of the 350 is the 355 and 383 and the 406. @darkstarking i wont go into the 200 zone of chevy v8s or the new engines but chevy made a 302 a LONG time ago but now ford has laid claim to it, 305, 327, and 350 for small blocks the 350 can be taken out to a 406 which is a beast. Big block chevys are 396, 406, 427, 442 (buick), and 454 the 454 can be taken out to well over 500s
@darkstarking666 no, its a chevy motor but its on the smaller end of the big blocks but not classed as a small block. I dont know how particularly common they are. I think the block is a '68 or '69.
@darkstarking666 i tried to link wikipedia to this comment page but it wouldnt let me. if you go to wikipedia and search big block 396, it gives you the scecs for the block itself.
I like your title chevy big block 396....theres only one problem though and that is that a 396 is still a small...there small blocks all the way up to 400....otherwise i love the truck, i have a 95 3500 with a true big block the 454
Hahahaha... are you for real? I cant believe what I just read! The displacement of the engine has noting to do with why its is or is not a big block. A 396 IS a big block dude... there's another big block that'll mess with your little rule and thats the 348.
@undercoverLsX They made small blocks with more cubic inches. (ie. 400 ect) but small blocks are a different block design than big blocks. Big block and small block is not about cubes at all. Also Big blocks are bigger, meaning more cast iron and larger in size. (not cubic inches ness)
Well, like I said, suppose it's all in how YOU look at it. My axles are built to be worked pretty hard. Dana 44's are hardly crap but maybe you have had bad experiences with them, I have had literally no problems and this truck gets ran pretty hard. Who gets off on slamming someones choice in what they do to their trucks? I mean, really.
built huh? so what do ya have in them. they put d44's in 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks. they are not heavy duty axles. if you haven't had problems, then you don't run it hard, end of story.
When i bought this truck it was a complelty different truck, bed, cab, motor, everything. Every single thing on that truck was looked over, rebuilt, cleaned up and hooked up. It's a 3/4 ton truck, it's got 3/4 ton running gear..big deal and like i said, its far from puny. We run it every year in the mud drags, we mud bog it, we trail ride it.....never had a problem. We have lead feet but we have skill.
Also, if you think sooo badly of my choice in running gear, why is it that you have one of MY vids on your main YT page. That truck is hardly different than mine other than the shocks in the front. Same running gear my friend.
No, I run 39.5's, swampers on the front and boggers on the back. In this vid, they are all swampers. If you look at the newer vids, they are the boggers. We ran pro-cut boggers on the back for the drag races and reg boggers on the front. It did awesome and cut thru the mud beautifully.
I see we are neighbors... what are you going to do with your 396? and um, yeah, that big son of a bitch is way to big for the trails around here... is the blue truck doing the hill climb in " 4x4 Chevy Wheelin" the same truck?
Where are you at? I still have the block for the 396, I'm not gonna use it. I'm putting a 427 in it. The D stroke is scary for me....And yeah, it's the same truck in those videos. You can find me on myspace....search vernice Porter
it's a 78. It did have a bored 40 over Big Block on it, but i crakced a piston. So now it has a d-stroked 400 in it. Wayyy tooo ballzy and alot of torque!
almost a shame to drive that in the mud, i would clean her up and but her in my garage and make sweet love untill it goes as i please ^^, THEN i could die a happy man
Yeah, I know.... I wasnt originally going to play dirty with it but the husband convinced me otherwise. It's been raced and we have fun with it but I think after this year it's retired from the mud. Hopefully we'll be able to paint it this coming year.
It needed some weight added to it though, it was way light in the ass. We just rebuilt the florring in the step-side so now it really bites down and takes off. Adding boggers helped a little also.
It's a 10 inch SkyJack lift kit. I have a MySpace profile and I have an album that is strictly this truck from the time we bought it up to recent. I have a 1987 long bed, reg cab with a 6 inch suspension and a 3 inch body..Iam runnin 35 inch baja claws on there now, do you think I could squeeze some 39.5 swampers under there or is that out of the question? Thanks alot man....sweet ride!
