OMG!!! I was just telling my husband about this commercial I remembered from when I was 6-8 living in Springfield VA (1981-3). Thank you for posting this!!!
My brothers and I grew up in VA and we used to see this commercial all the time in the 80s. So glad that someone had the good sense to post this and preserve this gem. Thanks!!
man my brother and sister an i were big un kung fu movies as kids and we lived right around the corner from pg plaza we used to bug out when ever w saw those kids there. i LOVE BEING FROM CHOCOLATE CITY.
Oh yes! I still after 30 years remember the words and I'm in Texas now for the last 12 lol!! Carvel, Jhoon Rhee, Mr. Ray's Hair Weave! All classics!!! :-)
Anyone have the updated one when the kids are older? The son I think appears at the end as a teen or adult can't remember, saying the catch phrase but a little different.
I lived in Loudon County from 1981-1985, and I remember seeing this commerical when I was in 1st grade (1981-1982). This was when I first understood what "karate" or martial arts WAS, besides a stock image of some guy chopping a block. This was a system of FIGHTING!!!
Jhoon Rhee will always hold a special place in my heart for that revelation.
There was a commercial before this one. Same footage, but different music with some narrator with a deep voice. Can't find that one, but I remember this one. Many days spent watching Channel 20 WDCA. That commercial got me down to the Jhoon Rhee School on Connecticut Avenue.
The kids at the end of the commercial are undoubtedly the master's children. They have a round house kicking madman for a father, OF COURSE they aren't bothered.
Wow I remembered every word to this jingle and have been singing it in the shower for years. I haven't seen this commercial since the late 1970's when I was a kid. Talk about a jingle that sticks in your head! WDCA watcher too!
Man, this commercial brings back memories....i used to drive past his dojo near Eastover, Md sometimes off the 210 freeway...I always wanted to go join.
This commercial brings back memories. I used to watch "Black Belt Theater" when I lived in Baltimore. This was before cable tv so you only had 4 channels but you could get wdca/20 or channel 5 if you fumbled with the antenna. It wasn`t all that clear but it was worth it. Life was much simpler than. After Soul Train and WWF Wrestling we would go outside and play for the rest of the day. That`s right we played outside without electronic gadgets. We had imagination.
@kevhar12 You just described my saturdays perfectly!!! Black Belt Theater, then sometimes the horror theater that came on right after. Practicing kung fu after watching the shows then playing outside all day, then Soul Train at 4 or 6, Watching "In Search Of" and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom on sundays waiting for dinner to be ready!
@Kinghercules My cousin told me his boy beat his ass. He would have people fight with him for real when they visit the dojo so he could show his skills, but sometimes he got beat. But he gets props for it anyway, that takes balls
@Jazzy9964 Ha ha Creature Feature blast form the past,we had Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert Wrestling at the Chase and Jhoon Rhee's nutty sense of defense,KPLR tv St. Louis MO. Wow....
i remember when I was 5 yrs old when this commercial always come on channel 5 WTTG/FOX.. That was the $hit.. really though I thought joon rhee was chinese until 20 years later I went to Korea and a taekwondo school was under his name.. So, I thought I say this.. FROM THE WILD STREETS OF SEOUL, KOREA TO THE CRAZY STREETS OF WASHINGTON, DC USA... the toll free number still stands (202) USA-1000..lol "nobudy boders me eeder" ( ; that dude today is the man all because of that part
That's Nils Lofgren doing the music. He later made several albums of his own, fronted a band called Grin, and backed up both Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen.
total childhood flashback. i also had a flashback recently when i heard nils lofgren singing a wildly cheesy song about the washington bullets, "bullets fever". why in the hell is that song not on youtube??!!
When I was a kid from New York City I used to visit my family during the summer in Washington D.C. and I used to love this Commerical and Sing the jingle NO BODY BOTHERS ME LOL. It brings back good memories of my Childhood.
Wow. Like many others, I first saw this awesome commercial as kid on the Washing ton D.C. channel WDCA while watching the Captain 20 show. Amazing childhood flashback. Thanks for posting this.
I met captain 20 at Festival Lakes (I worked there) near Leesburg. Remember the hampster races? Jee Wizz what were they thinking? I had a card with something that th4ey had drawings for every morning. pictures of Speed Racer, Crusader Rabbit, and crap on it... So was Rhee only DC area?
I grew up in maryland in the 70's and this was always on. Also remember Creature Feature and Petey greens washington. Also never forget the captain twenty show. There was also a Ralph Brown Buick commercial with the guy saying nooooobody.
I'm 35. A couple years ago, some young chick in a bar tried to tell me, "Nobody bother's me," was from a commercial for Kim's Karate. I hate when people are wrong and won't listen to wisdom.
Nils Lofgren, who was from Maryland, did the music for this and in 84 joined some dude named Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Nils is still playing with The Boss. LOL someone should take a sign to the next Bruce tour requesting this song.
I sure do remember this commercial. I also remember "the Hair Weave from Mr. Ray's!!! Not to mention Captain Tug, Eddie Leonard's Sandwich Shop and the Maryland Room restaurant in the old Hecht Co.before they got rid of it.
Great post...every once in a while this jingle gets back inside my head, glad I googled it this time. Now if I could only find the old "Mr. Ray's Hair Weave" commercial...
DAMN! This reminds me of 1980 or so, going to Arlington Virginia - my cousin and i visiting my grandma in the summer time - old TV with Rabbit ears - had to get up to turn the channel with that big dial..."click, click click" . I remember this commercial like it was yesterday!

Unless you're in real physical danger or really do fight and deal with people in a hazardous way for a living, there's no need to take martial arts. As for these self-esteem problems people have with accepting themselves for who they are (being bullied, etc.), don't take martial arts, see a shrink. Overall, with medical bills included, cost is about the same.
Chill, be fat, be happy. And if anyone bothers you, buy a gun, play some video games, watch a movie and relax.
I'm not a fan of crappling or mcdojos, but this is a pathetic attitude ("be fat" "buy a gun"). Martial arts can help people get in shape and move better in their bodies, irrespective of needing to fight.
Of course, if you decide to take martial arts, be wary of mysticism and phony, ineffective training.
My daughter takes taekwondo and I was telling her about this commercial when I was a kid me and my cousin used to love it. I told my daughter to ask my cousin about it months ago... I just got the idea to youtube it and low and behold! I was able to show my daughter! Wow thanx for the memories and the opportunity to show the next generation.
Only martial art ive practised is taekwondo but its DEFINITELY not the best martial art there is a muay thai fighter would probably destroy a taekwondo fighter...
Because you learned modern TKD. Older style of combat TKD consisted of real war killing moves such as breaking the neck, poking eyes, grabbing the groin, and a lot more. But let's face it, this has become Olympics sport. It has evolved from those savagery. So you saying TKD is weak is way wrong. It could have destroyed any other martial arts without no boundaries.
it COULD have im obviously talking about the shit they call taekwondo these days, i would rather train boxing than TKD boxing is much better in a real fight were someone comes in ur face and tries to drop u than
That's totally up to you. More people now days do TKD for the purpose of education, fitness, sport and moral values of asian martial art. If you are into MMA, you can go do boxing or jujitsu.
Or might as well join the army and learn killing techniques.
But for now, please keep your ignorance out of TKD vids. Perhaps it's your parents that made you do TKD. Go ask them why they did in the first place. It's about respect anyways.
OMG I have been telling people about this commercial forever and nobody remembers it! I'm going to put it up on my facebook right now. Thanks SO SO much for putting this up!
this was the best commercial when i was a kid, and somehow i forgot all about it! instant tears laughing while re-living this classic! haha! yea yoon rhee!
memories of summer vacation seeing this on TV during all the game shows in the mornings like super password, sale of the century, press your luck and, of course, the price is right..
my 4 year old say something and said "Edder" at the end and brought back memories of see this every Saturday. Anyone remember what channel this came on 20 or 50?
I used to see this on channels 20 and 5, back when you could still get the DC stations here in Baltimore. I've known this entire jingle by heart since the '70's, it's still the best by far. I still miss Captain 20's Cartoon Carnival and channel 45's Captain Chesapeake!! Those were the days, wonderful to see this posted...
@muzikman74 Oh, my goodness, Cookie Puss flying thru the air and Fudgie the Whale, what a trip!! Do you happen to remember the consumer info guide ads that used to run then, too? "Pueblo Colorado 81009, send for the book, don't wait for the movie" and made to look like an old b&w film. Hope someone will post that one of these days as well.
The USA-1000 phone number for Jhoon Rhee later got attached to 1-800 and used for most mail order TV commercials on the USA cable network in the 1980's-early 1990's.
First read about Jhoon Goo Rhee in martial arts book called From Lee to Li. Says he gave Bruce Lee advice about kicking and showed Muhammad Ali how to punch better, and still does hundreds of press ups and push ups each day.
I was born and bred in DC. I remember this and other Jhon Rhee commericals. I also rmember he was in a Kung-Fu movie once. I think it was B4 he got mugged in a parking lot.
I grew up in Northern VA. This was always on channel 20. Awesome! The funny thing is that I lost my virginity to Mountain Kim's daughter. Mountain Kim was Jooh Ree's main competition. I didn't know she was Mountain Kim's daugher until afterwords, though. That was scary. It was scary that she was his daughter, I mean, She herself wasn't scary, she was totally hot. And a really cool person, too.
thank you for posting this..i was trying to describe this commercial to my gf in california..I lived in northern Va all my life and we would get this commercial all the time on channel 20...awesome
Awesome! Awesome! Thank you for posting this. Brainwashin is a beeeoyotch ...LOL. I was singing the hook word for word earlier today (20ish years later) looked it up & found this... i also remember they came out with a new fangled one some years later. "Still nobody bothers me"
I just heard an improper reference about this commercial. I can't believe I found it on here. This is one of the best commercials EVER!!! 25 years later and I still remember the whole thing.
i googled this for shits and giggles, i can't believe someone posted this....i remember hearing this all the time when i was a kid in jersey....damn. lol
I remember hearing that Jhoon Rhee made Congress's 20th century top 100 list for most influential Americans (up there with people like Einstein, etc).
The kid who winks at the end is now a master of Jhoon Rhee's tkd his name is Chun Rhee just google jhoon rhee taekwondo and if u see a website that mentions Chun Rhee click on it and go to his bio it says he's the kid at the end and the girl who says "Nobody bothers me" is his sister

It is a sad irony that the two children in the end of this video were brutally murdered in 1992, during a dark period in the Arlington / Fairfax history. The boy, Chin Ho, was gunned down in shameless cross fire from the Asian Gang "Hinto Ju" - predominantly in Annandale. The female, Yuku Hai, was senselessly slaughtered in a VPL battle with the Latin Gang "Locos Vatos". This is unfortunate and ironic, but a true chapter in FFX history.
In this commercial you see Otis Hooper and Gary Hestelo. Mentors and trainers for Jhoon Rhee. Mr. Hooper humiliated me by taking away my belt and uniform because I violated a locker rule and left my things in there over night. I was in the Black Belt Club. Did commercials for our institute and was a top rank contender. Won first place in Bruce Lee's Memorial Day Tournament the year he died. I have never lived down Mr. Hooper's betrayal. And never again fought in the ring.
Driving home out of the blue in my head I suddenly heard this voice from my childhood saying "Nobody bodders mee!" And I was struck with a nostalgia so intense I *had* to google the and see if I could find anything about it. And here I am. Perfect. Many thanks to whomever dug up this rough diamond and posted it.

my 4 year old say something and said "Edder" at the end and brought back memories of see this every Saturday. Anyone remember what channel this came on 20 or 50?
Demfcane 2 years ago
I used to see this on channels 20 and 5, back when you could still get the DC stations here in Baltimore. I've known this entire jingle by heart since the '70's, it's still the best by far. I still miss Captain 20's Cartoon Carnival and channel 45's Captain Chesapeake!! Those were the days, wonderful to see this posted...

Man, I remember watching this on Channel 20 WDCA as well. Those were the good ol' days. Remember seeing the Carvel ice cream commercials as well?

@muzikman74 Oh, my goodness, Cookie Puss flying thru the air and Fudgie the Whale, what a trip!! Do you happen to remember the consumer info guide ads that used to run then, too? "Pueblo Colorado 81009, send for the book, don't wait for the movie" and made to look like an old b&w film. Hope someone will post that one of these days as well.
Peace, from the wife of Faust 668 :)

The USA-1000 phone number for Jhoon Rhee later got attached to 1-800 and used for most mail order TV commercials on the USA cable network in the 1980's-early 1990's.

Jhoon Rhee was at the time of Bruce Lee and in the time no one ever heard of Jackie Chan.

Who were the 2 kids who said "Nobody bothers me!"? Jhoon Rhee's kids?
heine71 2 years ago
Yes they were. When they got a little older, they actually did a follow-up ad saying "I used to say..."

First read about Jhoon Goo Rhee in martial arts book called From Lee to Li. Says he gave Bruce Lee advice about kicking and showed Muhammad Ali how to punch better, and still does hundreds of press ups and push ups each day.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
It is a sad irony that the two children in the end of this video were brutally murdered in 1992, during a dark period in the Arlington / Fairfax history.

Was there any truth in the rumor that both of the children were brutally attacked, or was that just Fairfax County Public School urban legend?

In this commercial you see Otis Hooper and Gary Hestelo. Mentors and trainers for Jhoon Rhee. Mr. Hooper humiliated me by taking away my belt and uniform because I violated a locker rule and left my things in there over night. I was in the Black Belt Club. Did commercials for our institute and was a top rank contender. Won first place in Bruce Lee's Memorial Day Tournament the year he died. I have never lived down Mr. Hooper's betrayal. And never again fought in the ring.
