Snare and Bass drum are basically correct but there's not enough emphasis of the down beat in the hi hat, they should be phrased with a positive down beat followed by a very light touch of the 8th notes in between beats 123 and 4. Secondly, he's playing too loud (Like a lot of drummers) so the sneaky feel and sound of Masons version is lost. The little drag beats on snare drum that typify masons style are also missing. This demonstration sounds more like a rough guess from memory
@clevermedia hes giving the meat and potatos. its up to the listener to use there ears to emulate the nuances.bye the way i checked out you solo nice stuff.
@clevermedia .... haha .... funny , some youtube jerk thinks he knows better than Ralph Peterson ... if this was expert village , yeah say whatever you want ...but on this one , you are a nobody and your opinion is irrelevant
Mr. Peterson really put himself out there with this clip. Drummers will be protective of the drummers they idolized, and Harvey Mason is one of them. It's like saying something bad about Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa, people (drummers) will always become defensive. Mr. Peterson, your groove is okay, but it does not have the feel as Mr. Mason's recording on Chameleon - i.e., the feel, the EQ effects, the plushness of the recording studio, etc.
Obviously... but not in the STYLE Mason plays it. And that's what the headline/info says. It implies it's not about the notes, but HOW you play it/the feel (thus 'Mason-style'). 'Chameleon-groove, as performed by Ralph Peterson.'
have you seen his other vids ? I think he pretty much nails it as for straight ahead jazz legends. Agreed this one has more of an 80s gogo swing to it...
True, my impression also about not completely capturing Mason's hi-hat feel. But to be fair, can ANY drummer nail Mason's hi-hat nuances? Beyond someone like a Stewart Copeland, I can't think of a drummer with more difficult hi-hat subtleties to try to emulate. Manu Katche, one of my favorites, has cited Mason's hi-hat, in particular, as a big influence. So... I'm willing to cut Ralph some slack here. He's attempting to do what no one can, really, and he still does it better than 99% of us.
To that I say no. Harvey's got one of the most recognizable and unique sounds that I have yet to hear accurately duplicated. You can perfect your Purdie shuffle, your Gadd paradiddles, and your Tony triplets until the cows come home, but I'll be impressed when someone duplicates Harvey's sound and technique. I just frustrate myself when I try to play his stuff lol.
Harvey's drum work on Chamaleon was inspired by Neftali Santiago after hearing Mandrill's "Fencewalk"....

No, I haven't looked further, I'll have a go ;-)
Yep, gogo-ish, mostly because of his hi-hat playing, it lacks the downbeat-drive of the way Mason plays this groove

I know wutchu mean. But check the Elvin Jones, Art Blakey and Hardbop (philly joe) styles. Incredible.
