Will ANY laser work? even a $5 one? or does it need to be one of those $200 ones. Because I have never seen a laser that you can see the beam without smoke soooo yeah haha any suggestions or something?

That's a good idea man. I always did things the hard way. I've built them with mirrors mounted on motors with the motor speed modulated from a driver circuit connected to a microphone. A pretty cool thing about that setup though is you can make lots of constant patterns from running the motors at different speeds. I had a decade counter on one that switched between voltage divider networks to cycle between patterns and also a variable voltage regulator for manual control.
