similar to primal scream's album after screamadelica, which was also very classic rock sounding, and also slagged way more than was fair (it's a good album)
I don't get why people dislike Gold Against the Soul so much. Like Holy Bible, it seems to show at times the genuine feelings felt by the band, which perhaps was absent with the heavily cosmetic Generation Terrorists.
@jonboyjon1976 the Manics ended up dislking it cos it sounded too 'classic rock', if rock legend is to be believed hence The Holy BIble's sonic shift. what the band thought isn't the final word, of course, just saying that this prob explains fans' reactions, when the band themselves (albeit mildly) slag it off
@funkyfunker stop writing text language and you might just stand a chance! I'm sure he's learned a lot about giving blowjobs during the time he spent servicing the horny, many-gilled males of Atlantis. Come on; we all know that's where he's been.
I could have write your comment...when then main character of the show (Ben?) is playing air guitar on his coach on this great tune...Souvenirs... ;o)
@IronRobM gold against the soul is their most shallow, sell-out ,soulless album. makes sense that more people think its better than their far superior first and third albums
That's dubious and far too overstated. To a small degree yeah, they caved in to the sound of the times, i think that's pretty clear. The reason why i think they despised this Album ( Gold Against the Soul ) is because they thought, "hey if we abide by the the record company's wishes a bit maybe we might sell ridiculous amount of records", which wasn't the case. (remember they had hoped to sell 10 mil plus albums with Generation Terrorist and then disband, truly a noble
a naive notion, innocence of youth really). There are songs in GAS that have the beautiful imprint of Richey and Nicky's Lyrical output, for example "Sleepflower" and "Life Becoming A Landslide " fucking genius, although somewhat instrumentally generic. Making a case for Gold Against the Soul is not easy but if you give close attention there are moments where the Album is undeniably Manic! As you said though, nothing compares to The Holy Bible, top 10 Album of the 90's for sure & JFPL, amazing!
@octagon79 do one. Listen to the lyrics. Angst and apathy in equal measure. Way better than EMG and "This is my truth". Yes not as good as 1st or 3rd, but far better than 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 10th.
Well, I haven't got anywhere from my despair. It's impossible to escape all the emptiness and painof life. I think, this song could be a great soundtrack to million people's lives, who live for nothing.
A really great period for the Manics. After the rawness of Generation Terrorists and before the angriness of The Holy Bible, everything seems to fit on Gold Against The Soul. Wonderful lyrics against sweeping melodic lines. Of course, it's helped by the fact that James Dean Bradfield has one of the greatest rock voices.
When i first heard this song on the radio, back when it came out, i became hooked on The Manics. I have bought every one of their albums ever since. This song is their best, in my opinion. Thanks for the great quality video.
