This guy puts Lin Biviano to shame. Solid core in his sound. Tasty inflections. Thought out improvised lines. And a powerful upper register, with what?? A sound a listener would like to hear....What else makes this guy different from biviano??? HE CAN PLAY IN TUNE!!!!!!!!
Thanks, man. Hey, I've always wanted to ask you why don't you face forward on your videos so we can see what you're doing? You really handle those Buddy Rich tunes quite well. I mean REALLY. Your timing is exceptional - which is paramount for a drummer. You really have good ears. And, am I mistaken or do you flip that right stick over to a traditional grip and play sometimes?
i'm touched by your compliments..regarding the position of the camera..i'm gonna change the position soon....i hold the sticks in a way that i feel comfortable with.
I forgot too mention, this is a great interpretation of a Beatles number. It seems you can't go wrong playing a Jazz version of a Beatles tune. Beatles have the greatest melodies of all time in my book.

incredible, i had a chance to study with charley while attending csula, and he has power and volume and range beyond compare, what year is this? does anyone know?
I should also add that Charley is a really nice cat and totally professional in his approach to music as a career and teaching. He had a lot of good things to say about working with BR. He said Buddy was very happy with this band. Which is saying something because Buddy wasn't always a happy person.
I taught jazz at CSU Long Beach from '98 to '84. Charlie was one of our trumpet teachers (most of the jazz players studied with him). His office was next door to mine and once/twice a week when he would teach his studio lessons he would do his warm up and practically blow the windows in my office out....the cat could play with some volume.
Was Charlie a disciple of Maynard? He hold the trumpet the same way as Maynard and his disciples. Also, he blows pretty high without effort another indication of a possible like to the Maynard school of blowing.
Dude you are awesome how long have u been playing???

One of the country's top lead trumpet players once referred to Charley as the most powerful trumpet player in the world.
rdangelo 4 years ago
I believe Charley was in the band from '70-74, so I would venture to guess it was somewhere in that time frame.

Put it on YouTube if you've got it. I'd love to see it.

He's talking about the album where Lin plays. We alluded to it in the text.

Yeah, I know - but I'd still like to see it. Maybe we'll do that video response we taked about, at some point.

First of all he spells it Charley. And yet it is Bill Adam. But this would be closer to 1974. This is essentially the Roar of '74 album personnel.
rdangelo 4 years ago
Well, the cover of this video and my Roar of '74 CD spells it has "Charlie". However, I have seen it both ways online.

Charley studied with Bill Adams @ Indiana and credits Adams with his success.

Just to be clear - it's Bill Adam, not Adams. Just in case anyone wants to look up more on him...

Glad you liked it, but that is actually Charlie Davis on trumpet. You can also find a listing of the entire band in the description.
