I love how in aikido the tori sensei always points his finger to tell uke which arm to strike with. Now try that in a real brawl and see how good your timing is?
@dobberdoss The point of Aikido is not to win fights, it's to avoid them. Either way you'd have several techniques to counter different types of strikes, and if your opponent decides to get creative, you could make things up to go with what they're doing too. Timing comes from practice, not everybody can do it. You may be skeptical because you've never seen anybody do it before, but I have, and it's an amazing and humbling experience.
Actually I tried aikido for over 2 years before going back to more realistic self defense techniques. If you wish to avoid conflict or fights then aikido is not a requirement. Good diplomacy and good running legs are.
NO technique is worth a damn unless you can execute it via as close to real sparring as you can get. That means, rapid change of stance, no cherry picking of strikes, no ridiculous hand grasps and holds, and no uke 'one step' attacks.
2 years isn't close to enough time to understand Aikido. I was the same way when I first took Aikido, it made no sense to me. The stance seemed stupid, the constant hand grabs and the weird breath throws where Uke just flew for no reason. What was worse was my friends who took BBJ or Karate and the stuff I was learning didn't seemed to work worth shit. But I stuck with it, more for the Budo than the martial art. But then after 4 years, it just suddenly made sense. And it works.
Two years is more than enough for someone with over 20 years previous MA experience I believe. Now, again I come to my main point. You say it now makes sense, Then can we see it proven in MMA please? If aikido works then it should make a mockery of MMA, EVEN in a defensive manner. Yet here we are nearly 2 decades on from the beginnings of professional MAA and STILL not one Aikido expert has come in to prove it's worth. Imagine the kudos for aikido if proven?
You have seen it in MAA, it's called Jui-Jitsu. Aikido derives from one of the oldest juijitsu's in Japan and it follows the exact same principles as any other juijitsu. What throws people off when they first see it is all the philosophies Ueshiba layered on top because of his religion. Peace and harmony, thats why a lot of people take it to begin with. complete self defense. But if you want to fight with it, you can, just toss out the religion and you have good ol fashion juijitsu.
NO, what I see in MMA is Brazilian JJ. C'mon now, I will say it again. I ve done aikido and BJJ is nothing like it. What I want to see is one of Aikido's TOP guys come into the Octogon and totally play with their opponent, fending off every attack they make, bringing in the wrist locks, the throws, the everything that is Aikido. No more excuses!
Prove it works with a real opponent who is really attacking. C'mon guys, you can't be this scared of a real contest?
I can't defend Aikido or any other style, because how it's taught and hows it's learned is everything. Maybe the dojo you went to was crap, maybe your too linear in your learning. Who knows, but you are right, to know if a style works, you have to see it in action. In the old days dojos were challenged by other dojos to determine these debates, but because Aikidoka don't look for a fight you'll have to do the challenging. Find a reputed Master and challenge his dojo and you'll find your answer
It's not so much about 'looking for a fight ', it is more about proving the theory and techniques under real circumstances. All MA's want this or what's the point? There's a saying,"Knowledge is no use too anyone sitting on a shelf ". Good debate. Thanks for your constructive replies
@dobberdoss Aikido understanding of "real" circumstances is actually closer to that of a reality self-defense school, than something from an MMA tournament - an artificially sterile claustrophobic environment with an artificially expanded time limit, artificially imposed goals, artificial system of counting win and loss, and artificially fixed number of attackers.
When in reality an Aikido tech. will bounce one's head off a car, in the ring it will uselessly push them away. Ring is not reality.
@dobberdoss (cont.) Aikido is a Budo, a martial way of life. It is about being ready without getting ready. It is about reacting to an attack that you did not expect, yet you're there, in the moment. The multiple attacker and weapon awareness, the soft focus built into all Aikido (and sister arts), is entirely useless in the artificial environment of the ring, where instead you play out fantasy scenarios rolling on sterile ground with no "good samaritans" to randomly kick you in the head.
I think this is one of the most efective aikido. I´ve been studying aikido for a couple of years and unfortunately in the Czech republic there ain´t teachers like this who would explain real working techniques, we just do showy movements:(
For those of you who can't find an Aikido dojo, try Hapkido. It is very similar. Well, my school is very similar. Some schools stress the kicks, but we work on the practical techniques (military style-moo sul kwan). My compliments to you Sensei. Another great video showing your smooth flowing technique.
Guys why do you have to compare with Seagal? Don't get into the comparison thing, just look at the guy and evaluate him.
I really like the way he applies the technique, very nice flow, very realistic, very practical. Great stance which means he has a really good root/base.
The way he explains things shows not only that he really understands how things work, but he is also very good at teaching.
btw, I'd also like the camera zoomed out at some points to be able to see the legwork
I like this guy. He should talk to the 'muy thai' guy on expert village who is teaching 'karate'. 'Karate guy' needs somebody to teach him something. He appears to be a blank slate. Good presentation here. Nice to see for a change.
lol its cool he wasnt using that eye right? lol Iloves me some Aikido I first started learning it when I was 10 Iv been learning it everyday sence ^.^
@dobberdoss You cant use aikido in MMA. Small joint locks are banned so the aikido practitioner has a small arsenal at his disposal.

Nice video. A little language correction though: A "mune tsuki" is a middle punch.
What you are showing (punch to the face) is a "jodan tsuki" or "gamen tsuki", take your pick.
