  • anyone doing mic's module at northumbria stumble across this yet?

  • Engineers need to love challenges.. wow.

  • Hola, un video excelente, enhorabuena.

  • BRAVO #^_^ Learning from the NATURE WORLD!!!!!!!!!

  • Excellent

  • Comment removed

  • There is no known law of nature, no known process and no known sequence of natural events which can cause specified information to originate by itself in matter. Therefore the origin of information must be non-natural and non-material. The concept of information is devastating to materialistic philosophy, always has been.

  • Hi, Love your video. We're a television production company called RTR Media inc

We're looking for new talent. Subscribe to our youtube channel, RTRMediaInc and check us out.

  • what the hell is a target greg, or whatever she is saying when she talks about the bug that dry itself out and reconstitute itself months later?

  • @paulcbarrera tardigrade ! craziest little creatures ever .. I thought cockroaches were tough til I read about these little guys.

  • Nature is the best teacher.

  • nature is the answer to our needs.........

  • This is huge

  • There are no "things," nothing is really separate from everything else. You are one "thing" but you are actually made up of trillions of also separate "things." You are in the universe, but the universe is one "thing." We are just all parts of one.

  • Leaving off the stupidity of mans evolution, and the first ten minutes very boring, I found this fascinating indeed.

  • Great..!! NOw, I have to go to pee.. xD

  • Janine Benyus. I SALUTE YOU

  • Biomimicry fits in very well with great visions of a future Earth:

    zeitgeistmovingforward[dot]com/

and Venus Project with Jacques Fresco

    thevenusproject[dot]com/

  • Her inflections remind me of Jodei Foster in Contact. And the ideas in this vid are great!

  • looks like those TED guys are still alive

  • This is Phenomenal !!! Bravo.

  • Awesome. Being a mechanical engineer, I wish all engineers are trained in school to think like this when designing anything! Here's to better thinking...

  • the whole presentation is ruined by the BMW car ad at the end.

  • god i hate olaveson

  • I will watch this again and again

  • did anyone get "Explain the last design idea “Life creates conditions conducive to Life” with an example"

  • This video gets all of its views from UOIT XD

  • I wish she didn't get to 12...then we wouldn't have a part c for number 1. I hate that guy that asked her to continue.

  • the answer to first question starts from 7:15 LOL (UOIT peepz only)

  • @sw33t65 I love you. almost had to waste 7 min of my life for nothing

  • I am, envs sucks the big one.

  • @sw33t65 Who watches TED because they are forced... People watch Ted for Knowledge!!

  • @sw33t65 i hate biomimicry now

  • @sw33t65 Lol every time I come back to this video I thumbs up your comment, because I'm always here to complete my assignment lmao!! Although I find this subject fascinating.

  • Absolutely Amazing!! It shows that this really is the Garden of Eden ...

it is only through our ignorance that we turn it into a hell, by ignoring the wisdom gifted to us through nature. Thank you for sharing this amazing video on YouTube! :)

  • Absolutely Amazing!!

  • Great inspiration!

  • Turning it back into eden!!

  • Turning it back into eden!!

  • I absolutely love this. This evening I attended a "Go Local" event in Tacoma, WA which was very much focused on sustainability and utilizing natural resources. It was wonderful to see that consciousness really is shifting and this new awareness is permeating even some of the most unanticipated places. Thank you for your wonderful message. I'm so excited to watch humanity become more alive than ever before! Shift is Happening!!

  • Awesome!! Love where this is headed

  • Brilliant...our future in the making. I may actually have some hope again!

  • Holly shit here Latino Beauties **rockmycity.info**

  • I nearly choked seeing the demolition of falling water.

  • Nature builds from the bottom up, starting with atoms and molecules. Humans have developed technology from the top down, starting with stone tools. Given enough time, the two will meet. Human technology will become nature, and vice-versa.

  • as a mechanical engineering student, i can safely say that the greatest engineering marvel of all time is the human body.

  • What a bunch of liberal hippie shit. The rest of the world can't even catch up to non-environmentally friendly technologies and living styles. What the hell makes these smug fucks think that the entire world can turn to technologies such as biomimicry which are more expensive and less important to every day living essentials when they can't even feed them fucking selves??

  • @minimusmax

    1. How does any of this have anything to do with liberalism?

    2. Why would the "rest of the world" even want to develop a non-environmentally friendly lifestyle?

    3. Expensive developments will happen either way; why not aim toward sustainability, and be influenced by biological systems which have clearly worked or the past 3.8 billion years, rather than continuing to waste resources?

    4. Increased desertification certainly will not help these populations to grow their own food.

  • @ledepotesta 1. liberalism=change

    2. Because it's cheaper and more cost-effective/efficient

    3. because non-environmental developments are cheaper

    4. they're thinking about here and now, not in 500 years.

  • TED rocks.

    great talk.

  • I wasn't looking for this but something else...but I'm glad I ran across this. This is pretty cool. Thank you.

  • truely the mind of the Almighty God

  • Asian Beuties are there lushfmlk.info

  • We all know that nature has the most advanced technology on the planet. The only reason why we use metal and plastic and such is because we simple aren't able to do better just yet. We aren't able to 'copy' most of nature's incredible desings.

I think it's great that she's reminding us to look at nature once in a while but her idea's are nothing new.

  • Nature and Biomimicry are in my opinion the best schools.

  • @tsukiko140 - my friend, this world - it seems, especially the U.S. Nation and the capitalistic corporations who feed the hedonistic consumers that support them, they are in "it" for profit, not for benefit. Simply put

  • I am surprised why this idea hasn't caught on because it's so brilliantly obvious. Take a look at the earth, and nature they're adapting to what's being thrown at them, and it seems to me that we're just making up more technology to try to "fix" the problem. Also..animals think about their offspring and how they want to preserve a healthy environment for them to live in. Maybe we should think more animal and take their advice instead of trying to squeeze the earth for resources-what we have left

  • @tsukiko140 My friend, this world - it seems, especially the U.S. Nation and the capitalistic corporations who feed the hedonistic consumers that support them, they are in "it" for profit, not for benefit. Simply put

  • @hurstdonut

Exactly. All conversations about Biomimicry tend toward how man can take some aspect of nature and turn it into a 'profitable' venture. There is an inherent disconnect between Biomimicry which is about closed loop total optimized efficiency and the consumption based economic system which seeks maximization of profit margins through designed short product life cycles (planned obsolescence) and measure success in more units, transactions, and services consumed.

  • Too bad there's only been 153,890 views. Why not 100,000,000???

  • Comment removed

  • Sustainable? Those wastewater professionals don't dig and process iron ore into their pipes. Biomimicry? When species in nature exceed their carrying capacity, their populations crash. Why not mimic that? Oh, but "sustainability" wants to avoid dealing with the population problem with "green" technology. Will your biomimicry address global hegemony and domesticity? These are intelligent ideas, but they fail to address the fundamental issues they claim to.

  • There are micro-organisms from cotton plants that consume oil, and when they die they become safely edible fish food. Why aren't we spraying this stuff in the gulf?!

  • foolish mortals, how amusing.

  • So true, I find it funny how many of "Man's Achievements" were already DESIGNED

Here is just a few :D

    Brain = computers

    Eyes = camera

    ATP Synthase = motor

    Mitochondria = fuel processing

  • @Gilbertus1986 Faggot = You

  • @christheskitz

Gee that was very enlightening did you think of that all by yourself?

I hope you didn't have to break into a sweat thinking about the words?

  • @Gilbertus1986 Break into a sweat on my dick.

  • @christheskitz

if thats the most intelligent thing you can say. I really wonder why you are watching this particular video

  • @Gilbertus1986 Cunt.

  • @christheskitz

    Very intellectual of you!

Considering you were the one who first sent messages on here addressed to me, (of a rude nature)... All I can ask is WHY? Are you just calling people names because of your inferior self-esteem? Who knows, all I can say is good on you for a one word response.

  • @Gilbertus1986 You're a faggot.

  • @christheskitz Don't you have to be gay to say that?

Stop Trolling and calling people names go back to school kid.

  • @christheskitz Very intellectual of you!

Considering you were the one who first sent messages on here addressed to me, (of a rude nature)... All I can ask is WHY? Are you just calling people names because of your inferior self-esteem? Who knows, all I can say is good on you for a one word response.

  • @Gilbertus1986 nah fuck ya, your a dickhead

  • @christheskitz I agree....someone should put him out of our misery :)-~

  • @atomicfriendo i think you worded that wrong...

  • @Srlancelot39 worded what wrong?...anberlin sucks :)-~

  • @atomicfriendo "Someone should put him out of our misery"? that makes no sense....i think you mean: out of his misery.....

  • @Srlancelot39 actually , if that doesn't make sense to you than you're an moron. Deal with it, there are special classes you can enroll in. :)-~

  • guys check out PLATINODESIGN(DOT) COM for some more amazing ideas 4 interior design

  • What a smart person she is. Truly amazing. I'd like to spend a few month with her just listening to her brilliance without interrupting.

  • Gods design is super intelligent all glory to our creator

  • @valu777 fuck ur creator ;D

  • @UnluckyGambler do you blaim GOD for your gambling losses?

  • @valu777 oh i dont regard the God hypothesis as valid.

  • @Unlucky Gambler oh and do you have hard evidence for your position?

  • @valu777 the fact that ur evidence for ur hypothesis is inadequate to convince me, should be enough evidence for my position.

  • @Unlucky Gambler Hbr 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; PRAISE his MIGHTY NAME Jesus the messiah the Christ the Saviour of the world .

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

  • @valu777 why do u waste my time with irrelevant fictional literature?

  • @Unlucky Gambler because it is relevant and your life is important , your life is special , that is why Jesus died for you

  • @valu777 jesus died for himself, not for me. he died for his own selfish reasons. he wanted admiration, he wanted worship, thats what he died for, not for me.

my life is my own, and it aint special.

still, it has no relevance in regard to the validity of the God hypothesis.

  • @Unlucky Gambler true in part because of his death he won the universe in a card game with the devil

  • @valu777 card game? how much do u know about ur own religion? there is no playing card games with God, for He knows all. does omniscience ring a bell?

everything that happens is as God wills it. Lucifer's rebellion, original sin, all God's fault, because God created the universe at its original state, and then set things into motion, all the while knowing exactly what will take place afterwards. if ur dick gets chopped off by a cosmic debris falling down to earth, ur God willed that too.

  • @Unlucky Gambler how about free choice and cause and affect , this can be Gods choice for his creation , possibly he has chosen to allow sinners to get worse as per romans he turns them over to their own ways , we cannot fathom Gods ways as they are higher than our ways ,, did you make the universe ??? no so you are just one speck of the universe

  • @valu777 actually, i did make the universe. i am not a speck of the universe, i AM the universe. ur imaginary God is an attempt at understanding me. a very primitive and flawed attempt, and it was of course a failure. it is possible for mortals to comprehend my being, but those who try to comprehend me are too foolish, and those who arent foolish dont bother to try. all is as i will it.

  • @Unlucky Gambler well you are fantastic can you spare a planet or two?

  • @valu777 mine will be done. there is no use asking.

  • @Unlucky Gambler well see you at the judgement then

  • @valu777 i do not judge, i observe.

there is no life after death. you are all but pieces in my game of self-entertainment, expendable, of little importance. once u die, u will be recycled, recombined, to form new pieces, and the game goes on.

  • @Unlucky Gambler and you have evidence to back your comment ? or is it just an opinion and to be taken as such?

  • @valu777 ur questions are as foolish as ur existence. i am the causation of ur existence and ur eventual demise. this exchange is over.

  • @Unlucky Gambler that's ok i expected more from you , i suppose you have to know when to fold them , Jesus is all in and takes the pot once again

  • @UnluckyGambler&valu777: You are both wrong!! ALL existence is within MY head. There is NOTHING outside of my own mind!! You are ALL products of my imagination!! I AM THE MASTER WHO MAKES THE GRASS GREEN!!!!

  • @MrStantonP interesting, one of my fantasy's character thinks he is the fantasizer, hmm!

  • @UnluckyGambler and how do you propose to do that?

  • Instead of being on the 'wise sage of nature' side of things, she should take some time to listen to the 'wise sage of technology' side.

Technology is literally progressing to reinvent nature. The first goal of human nature was to conquer the world. Now that has been accomplished, we will begin to reinvent it and make it better.

I guess that's why it's always so painful for me to talk to tree huggers. They're shortsightedness traps them in the current issues, not the future solutions.

  • @evanplaice Could you please enlighten us with an example of how "we" have "reinvented nature"? LOL

  • Biomimicry is always increasing as an innovative and useful topic.

Where she completely missed the mark was with the computer hardware part. If she took the time to change her treehugger lense with an engineering lense she would realize that humans advanced in terms of information systems architecture much faster than nature.

The materials are getting better (ROHS) and the execution is becoming more eco friendly. But the technology's capabilities are still in their infancy.

  • @evanplaice How do you conclude that the progress in IT is positive or "codusive to life" in the long run? How do you know that at the current course, humans are simply on the fast track to its own demise? Nature maybe slow in your definition but it is sustainable. That's the whole point.

  • @dzhang78 How about interfacing directly with neural pathways to replace missing limbs. Reverse engineering photosynthesis to create hydrogen using sunlight. Using LEDs as a low power consumption way to grow plants in space (most plants only require blue and red light to grow, green is wasted energy). Or most importantly, creating a collective of human knowledge to increase the rate at which our technology and culture evolves into a form that has less impact on the earth.

  • @dzhang78 Consider that, what used to take the destruction of acres of trees to produce paper a few decades ago can now be done with a laptop that uses 1/4 the power of the standard incandescent light bulb during normal operation. We're changing from 'how fast can we conquer nature' to 'how fast can we restore nature.' A lot of technological research out there today doesn't just seek to mimic nature but to improve it.

  • @dzhang78 First, human technology has gone from verbal and written communication to instant access to share information freely with any other individual on the planet in less than 100 years. It's not very efficient yet but it's just the start. Second, our collected intellect is growing to the scale where we can take on seemingly insurmountable problems like reverse-engineering nature. Self assembly is just one of the problems being worked on (at a nano scale).

  • @dzhang78 (cont) The grasshopper collision problem was already solved nearly 2 decades ago on commercial aircraft. It's called TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System). She evangelizes about biology but makes broad sweeping arguments against technology even though it's clear that her knowledge about tech is limited. No whiz-bang future tech is going to save us from ourselves. If we want to save ourselves we need to understand that even humans have a carrying capacity.

  • @evanplaice Hardly solved--two planes collided on the runway last night at JFK:

  • @ColemanTO1 FYI, TCAS is for in the air only, look it up. That's probably the French pilot's fault for not correctly following ATC directions to taxi on the runway or the runways being designed on a scale too small to handle the new super-jumbo A380s. Unfortunately, technology is NOT a solution for general human incompetence.

  • In assuming teliology in natural things, creationists must account for the deeply embedded purpose vs counter-purpose system observed. Is this a schizophrenic designer at work?

  • brilliant.

  • realii helped with my research :) xx

  • Yet more examples of how God already did it far better.

  • @Suge212 Over Millions of years, not thousands.

  • thts very interesing talk

  • Nothing in biomimetics makes sense except in the light of design

  • Let us forget "We own nature"

Let us think "We will LEARN from nature, not to beat it, but instead we will be a student forever."

What a beautiful puzzle to unravel, forever, and for the good of all.

  • AMEN SISTER

  • steeling? ahhh hahaha. maybe someone steeled your intelligence.

  • The beginning of her speech with the bird courtship was brilliant.

    I smiled.

  • If you believe in God, you are his engineering design.

    Fail?

  • I like the idea of biomimicry and it's intention to reduce or even eliminate our dependence on our present technology, the only thing that cause the problem is when it comes to production, It is nice if producing this technology without creating any problem which is the main issue we are facing in our present day industry. The industry that is the main culprit of this environmental mess. And are we ready for the changes? and who will decide? it's not the consumer but the manufacturing sector.

  • You cannot separate the consumer and manufacturing sector, or demand from supply, when talking about impacts of the commercial world. Both want and the fulfillment of it are issues to be addressed simultaneously, I think.

  • BeachofDreams I think you are missing the underlying significance.

You recoil at "talk of deferring to nature"

Bud, you are a product of that nature!

Our healthy society & economy depends upon that healthy, generous, benign nature ~ Biosphere

You sound like youre still caught up in the

WE ARE THE CENTER OF CREATION faith-based fantasy.

(nothing but toil, trouble and doom in that direction)

Time for another Copernican revolution. ;-)

  • You're right I had no right and little justification for jumping to that conclusions.

    Guess I was just ranting.

I've reread your posts and though I don't necessarily agree with your tone - I see you make some valid points.

    sorry... happy new year ;-)

  • does anyone know where I can find the tapescript for this video?

    tks

  • Also, Benyus seems to forget that while current life forms are the latest products of evolution (or "R&D"), these products are very likely to go extinct sometime in the future (whether humans interfere or not). Their design is all well and good as long as it presents an advantage in its own ecological circumstances and context. Successes have been made through biomimicry, no doubt, but I really wish it wouldn't be dressed in all the talk about deferring to nature as a whole.

  • The main criticism I have about biomimicry is that you can, at any point, call any design biomimetic. Aeroplanes are thus examples, according to the method, of biomimicry because they fly and do what birds do.

Moreover, you can't always take a solution found in one ecological context - say, giant lilypad structures - and apply it to something in a different context - floating cities, for instance.

And not only is there a problem of context but of scale. See the Biosphere 2 expm't.

  • Your comments are so full of fail it hurts.

  • Well, sorry to read that you're fine with one-liner platitudes, rather than a more detailed rebuttal.

  • This woman is a yank spoon. great content though

  • Great ideas here. I also strongly agree with Boolze

  • Sustainability? People, nominate Jacque Fresco for TED Talks!

    thevenusproject (dot) com/jacque-fresco/resume

    To nominate a candidate, email:

    fellows @ ted (dot) com

  • I love it, we make our own Eden. I really hope this wakes people up to the solutions in front of us.

    Namaste to you all!

  • Brilliant Lecture. It is about time we start focusing on being in harmony with nature instead of trying to conquer it. Wow, this video was very inspiring.

  • @Againstthestream08 Harmony indeed. Man's well being is a facet, an extension of his environment. Interconnected, Law of ONE!!

  • @Againstthestream08 for every smart person there are 1000 more idiots.

  • So this is where all the smart people of youtube show up haha

  • @BigBrotherGrim Damn Str8

  • Great Lecture! Thank you!
