I'm a 61 year old, Chevy driving, desk jockey of a department manager, and I've seen a few funny episodes of both the 18 and 4 wheeler variety. I say funny, because nobody was hurt - except, that is, the pride of the limo driver when he "bottomed out" on our executive turnaround!
in new york city this is so common its silly. they have bridges that even a cube van that you can rent can have this happen . i was at a repair shop that had more then 300 trailers with the tops like this. the owner told me he got at least 2 a day everyday. also in that city they post the height of the bridge but then pave it and pave and pave again making the sign of clearance totally wrong.
OK folks, lets go over this again.. a trailer is 13' 6" that bridge is 11' so the darn thing will not fit. As a truck driver if you do this one, the words you're fired come shortly afterwards.
Most dryvan trailers are about 13 ft 6 but he isnt very smart or efficient to attempt goin under something that is 2 and a half feet shorter that is when I was driving I chose to drive flatbed dump and grain not dryvan or reefer I did some tanker work to I enjoyed that as well but still to this driver why
i had a similar incident a few year ago driving trucks,a bridge that i used to go under every day had the road surface relaid and as a result the road was 1\2 a foot higher than it was previously.so instead of 4.2 mtr clearance it was 4.05 end result for the day was one destroyed truck body.ps insurance paid out on the damage and the contractor for the road liable for all damages
In the North East of the USA, there are still lots of low bridges. I hate NYC, because I everyone tells you to just go, even though the sign says no trucks. they might be laughing when you hit somehting
probably happens in Illinois or newyork because there are so many underpasses wiyh old or wrong clearence signs with them go to bqe you will s all the signs says 12`6 ans 12`2 but you can pass with 13`6 truck without problem so i think driver tought it was a old signed which was not updated but here is the kicker he is %100 fired after that if he is not student driver and he cant be working as a truck driver for long time unfurcunetly
Drivers are to know the height of the vehicle. That's what they are paid to know. "Hmm...a bridge ahead. How tall is my trailer? How tall is the bridge? Not gonna fit! Better FLOOR it!" Believe it or not, there ARE stupid truckers. I had a double full of gas about 2 car lengths behind me. His speed was supposed to be 55. I was 66. I got on C.B. and told him he was wrong. He just laughs. How professional is that? Hauling GAS, at that. internationaldave@gmail.com if you want to comment.
standard dry van minimum clearance is 13'6.. first thing I notice here is how far under he got.. given the width of the road I would say he was going too fast.. in the US every overpass/tunnel is supposed to be marked, however its a drivers responsibility to notice if it is or isn't.. if this guy was driving one of my trucks he would be looking for another job.
I drove the big trucks and I learned to eyeball the heights pretty well. Unfortunately, this driver never thought about that and turned the overpass into a giant horizontal can opener. I believe that most likely he was fired for making such a simple mistake. If he made this mistake, he would most likely make the same mistake again!
I jambed one under the overhead in downtown Charlottesville VA. Right by the university. We had everybody there, cops, wrecker, tire service, on a Sunday morning.
The cop says...well didn't you hear the siren, I said no.....She says...Oh, I guess it isn't working. itsMALS is right, give the insurance a work out. And OH yea...I didn't loose my job...I own the rig
there will b an investigation into that accident.. I know from experience tho, driving in the Chicago area the underpasses aren't true to what the posted height actually is, the sign may say 13 ft but it might b 11.5 or 12, clearly not enuff space to clear a rig. If it's not posted or the driver is not sure, don't even try it. It can happen to the most seasoned driver as well.. I know my day will come as well. Lets just hope I get it on cam when I do.. Cheers!
@itsMALS Nope. He'd be on probation. But if he were to try to get another job somewhere it would be tough. If he wasn't devoted to that company, he is now.
Ill bet he was blamed and fired. Unfortunately our highways and city streets are only set up for cars that can fit under 6 foot overpasses. I had a close call with a 13'7 overpass in Detroit. It had been measured in the middle (left lane) and sloped down toward the right. I couldnt get over to the left lane due to Detroit rush hour traffic and missed scraping the bridge by millimeters because I managed to split the lane at the last minute.
@itsMALS I HAVE driven 20 years, encountered countless low underpasses and ALWAYS had a chance to avoid them. The difference between 13'6" and 11 is quite obvious. It's not like the overpass isn't marked and he missed it by 2 inches. And yes, most companies will fire you on the spot for hitting a bridge. That is NOT what insurance is for. The insurance company will often insist that the driver be removed from the policy or the rates will go up.
@wavking you sir are correct, not only is every underpass marked with the clearance but on top of that when you go to get your license and take teh driving test u will go under a bridge then when u get thorough it the instructor asks you the clearance one of 10 drivers gets it how common lol..... you always have to pay attention to clearance one of the main things
This supports my argument that being able to vote should require some hurdles so that people like the one who did this won't influence the results of elections. how friggin' dumb can a person be? I need a drink.
@ian9564 No not racist at all - it is common knowledge that Polish drivers do not adhere to tachograph rules or working time directive. My comment comes from the fact that through VOSA and police checks it is also common knowledge that Polish drivers are paid by the kilometer and not the hour - this is why they are regularly found to have been driving in excess of thirty hours at a time, which gets the job done until they drive over a car containing a family of five!
in my neigbour town a truckdriver had to follow the police, and he got stuck under a railway bridge :D
