does any of the updates they made feel any faster to you and how long does the battery last it says 10 days on the web but you know it probably doesnt
@TheOriginallyKayla Actually yes, there has been a substantial difference from the 1.0 version to now. Speed is much improved. I've had the Nook running on and off for nearly a month without recharging. Believe it or not, but the 10 hours battery life is not far fetched at all. The biggest drain is the OLED screen at the bottom.
Please consider that B&N has the worst Customer Service. I make a question 8 times!!!! and never get a serious answer, always evasive, so I wrote to most of the Management Team and voila!! after a few hours they answer me and resolved my case.
is there an option where you can jump pages if you're reading? say i was on page 100 and wanted to go back to page 50, is that possible without going through every page between 100 and 50?
.Does it have any features that are like the Kindles such as text-to-speech and changing font size, or changing the way you read it like sideways and ssuch. Please give me a full rundown on the Nook's features and software suxh finding books, the touch screen is it more repsonsive? My grandma is thinking about gettign an e-reader and she uses the library sites alot to I said the Nook cause yeah Kindle can do it anymore but I want her to get the same satisfaction I get from My Kindle. so please.
@bader854 No the nook currently does not support text to speech. You can change the font size, you have three choices of the size. You can Hold it sideways, but it is not ideal. The touchscreen still feels sluggish to me. I actually had the chance to play with the Nook color, I will be posting a video of that soon. Has your Grandma played with your Kindle? Does she seem comfortable with that format. I find older people like real keyboards, which neither nook has.
I am thinking of getting this for my son 13th birthday. He loves to read and would live in Barnes and Noble if he could . Do u think that this would be a good investment ? Are there very many books available for his age group for free ? Thanx your help would really be a great help !!!!
@toi30 Try the nook color, he would probably get a lot more out it, especially since it will be getting a new version of the OS that supports the android market. Essentially you will be getting something like an iPad for 1/4 of the price.
@iamgadgetman you did fine. Actually you have a very sexy voice where I could actually understand what you were saying. Also, you are very attractive! Does the nook play music and movies?
@LiveLaughLovesss Why thank you. ;) The Nook that I was reviewing does play music, however it does not play video. If you want a full media device that does both, I might suggest an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. So many new readers and tablets came out of CES, there will definitely be competition this year. Also remember the new Nook color is out and a new iPad is coming in April....or so i have heard. ;)
@LiveLaughLovesss If you are broke and you still want a e-reader type of experience. The best one to buy for your money right now is the new Kindle. (The black one). I believe it is $139 for the wifi model. That will do a ton and is by far the best for that price. $10 more will buy you the nook that I am reviewing here, $110 more will buy the Nook color which is essentially a an android tablet for half the price of an iPad. If you can afford it, I would say go for the Nook Color.
The nook supports the open epub format, so there are literally thousands of free books out there in addition to the ones that show up in the nook shop.
@dannners Actually with the release that came out recently (April?) you CAN read email. It has a rather basic web browser still in Beta, but you can read email and web pages. Mobile pages seem to work best (just got mine for my birthday!)
@unkwnzone It does, but at the time this video was shot it did not but, its 2010 now and it certainly does have a web browser. I wud know, i have one of my own.
I seriously hope that college text books go electronically soon! Anyone who has had some 1,500 page literature text book knows what I am talking about.
@guzek6 If you a tryout to download a book that costs money you will need a major credit card or debit card in order to create an account to buy books.
I like everyting about this, but I didnt hear anything about being able to "upload" books you may already have on paper to the Nook. Does it do that? If it doesnt, they should make it a capability to search for your books using the books ISBN and download them free.
@jrad10x10 The Kindle has a more established library at the moment. The color screen at the bottom is nice, but I am finding it more to be a gimmick at this point. I find typing on the Kindle 2 much easier with the physical keyboard. The Android OS just in't fast enough to support the graphics. It feels like it still needs work, where the kindle series feels more polished. The Kindle 3 is coming, but I'm not sure when. If you have the opportunity to play with both, you should before you buy.
@iamgadgetman Alright, thanks. But do you know anywhere where I can try out the Kindle 2? B&N has working models of the Nook but I have no clue where I would find a working model of the Kindle 2.
@jrad10x10 Unfortunately Amazon does not have a physical store so the only way you can interact with a Kindle 2 is to buy one or find a friend who has one.
Do you really like the iPad? It looks more like a huge iTouch. I was a little let down with it, I was expecting something like the TouchSmart. I don't think I'd pay $500 for an iPod.
I'm a book lover but I still don't know if an $250 eReader is worth it, some eBooks are almost the same price as the paperbacks.
I think the NOOK is prettier than the Kindle, but besides that, which one you think is best?
I do like the idea of the iPad, Not sure that it is the best thing since sliced bread since I haven't used one. There is always a method to Apples madness, so i trust that this thing will fill the niche they are looking to fill. I think the nook is promising, but you know Amazon is working on a response to the nook, the Kindle 3. Which is rumored to have a touchscreen and color or a color panel of some type. You may want to wait until after April 3rd. If you need one right now, get the nook.
fuck the fuck iPad, Apple made that shit at low cost to the them and shipped it off as this "great new product" that essentially is nothing but a huge expensive ipod touch... honestly what fucking use is it
would you recommend this to college students for a replacement for all our bulky books? i'm thinking of getting it and have heard horrible things about this unit, but you've shown me otherwise.
You may want to consider the iPad. My only concern with the nook is its lack of educational books. You may want to go to a store and surf the unit and see what is available to you. If the books are available then go for it. Love how easy to read the screen is.
loved the review very nice job. got a question. i am 13 and i love reading and i want a nook. my parents have agreed to pay for three books a month. how much would you recomend a nook to a teenager and how much do you think i would like it? thanks
Thanks! Have you thought about an iPad? The Nook is great, but for a teenager I would assume you would want more interactivity? However if you want a unit dedicated to what it is supposed to do, which is be a digital book with no distractions then I would say the Nook is a great choice. You can't beat the clarity of an E-Ink display. I would definitely get this over the Kindle.
I notice that the nook has an headphone jack, can it read books to you like the Kindle? Also, if it can, does its voice sound all "robotical" like the Kindle?
I've heard it sound robotic like the kindle, but that's pretty much what you get with any system. even when my own laptop talks to me with a robotic voice. i'm guessing proper inflection and excitement and what not in the voice is hard to get right.
An honest answer would be to wait. Ebook technology it's still in its infancy, and both readers are expensive. BUT if I had to make a choice, I'd choose the Nook, or a Sony PRS-series, because they can read Epub/open format Ebooks, whereas the Kindle cannot until you hack it with some third-party reader/converter software.
@twitbit23 No, just happened to be connected to a WIFI network, it does also connect over AT&T cellular service when WIFI is not available and vice versa.
The kindle dosen't support an open format such as epub. Amazon have also deleted books from the kindle without asking. Search new york times website for "Amazon Erases Orwell Books From Kindle"
Please consider an e-reader that supports open formats such as epub. This includes sony's, the nook and many others.
Depending on the format, they haven't come up with a converter yet for kindle books, but I'm sure it's on the way. But of course it does not support AMZ files (Amazon). Below are the supported file types.
Can you go to a certain part of the book? Like is there the table of contents for the book you are reading and can you skip around the book without going through page by page?
i'm sorry but just listening to the slow, quiet tone of your voice makes me sad... can't even watch the whole review. have you been depressed lately? are you always like this?
I'm sorry to have made you sad. Honestly I had to be quiet as to not disturb anyone else. I will be sure to be more energetic next time. Thank you for your comment. :)
is there still a long formatting delay when opening a book? if so does it do that each time you load the book? or just the first time? great review thanks
@ourhorridmistake I'm sure thats the day they 'expect' they will drop it in the mail. and whatever delay there is in the shipping method will push the delivery date past that.
If you like more in the way of gadgets, go with a nook. If you're more of reader go with kindle. That's really what it comes down to. If read the reviews they are so neck and neck. The kindle cover opens like a book though so you don't have to slide it out.
Gadgetman, Thanks for the review. I had heard that once the LCD is in its sleep mode that you an sweep on the LCD to turn pages while reading. I tried it on the instore display model but could not make it work. Could you try it with yours and post a short vid if it works?
Yes, actually this is true. You have to do it really fast. Almost as if you were "flipping" through pages. It took me a moment to figure that out. I guess you might have been doing it too slow? It is kind of silly really since you have four tactile buttons to change pages. I think it is more of a gimmick.Plus if you tap it just slightly the LCD screen turn back on and that function is disabled.
Oh shoot, another thing. I heard a rumor that the nook has backlighting for the e-ink screen, in case you get caught without a light source. Any truth to this?
Thank you very much for the review GadgetMan. I was wondering if you had an opportunity to use the dictionary on the nook? And if so, how well does it work? I had the chance to test the Kindle and the dictionary was very easy to use on it -- hoping it will be the same with the Nook.
@Iiquidiai Takes more clicks than the Kindle to look up a word. It doesn't preview the definition like the kindle, it actually takes you out of what you are reading into the dictionary.
I am debating between this and the Kindle. I have heard that B&N has the "intention" of the Nook being able to use apps, social networking, etc... Have you heard anything about this? Also, when putting Google Books on this, do you need to sync the device with your computer or will it download them through wifi?
Well, I am unsure if B&N's intention is for the unit to be anything more than an E-reader, but I do know that hackers have already rooted it. This enables things like web browsing and RSS feeds. That's the beauty of this thing and something that the Kindle will never have, Android. Once people take advantage of the Android OS the game is over for Amazon's Kindle. As far as the Google Books, they are readily available in the B&N store and I have already downloaded a few. Works great!
I'm happy that now witht the update, the screen refreshes faster. I was a bit unsure about that at first, especially when I saw a video comparing this and Kindle. It was way slower.
Do you think that touch screen is hard to navigate? When I look at it in a video, it's hard for me to imagine using/scrolling through that. It looks too thin... Maybe it's different in real life?
@ZutaMtian The touch screen just takes some getting used to. It is rather thin for the scrolling feature. Especially since most of the lists are only one more deep, so the scrolling is kind of rediculous.
would you recommend this over the kindle? i really like the nook because it looks cooler. looks matter to me about an eReader but is the e ink display better on either one of these devices? i really need to know because i am ordering either this or the kindle in a few days.
I recently purchased the Amazon Kindle and was unhappy with the keyboard and I am now returning that for a Nook which I will hopefully get by February. One of the things that I do like about the Kindle was variety of images that appear when putting it into "sleep" mode. I know this is a silly thing and not very important, but I was wondering if the Nook also did this.
Im just wondering how you go about paying for the books you want? Do you put in your credit card numbers and all that stuff when you first get it so when you find what you want it has the info?
Coming from the Kindle, I would say it takes some getting used to. Having two screens is cool, but not having a tactile keyboard is not. Don't get me wrong I have an iPhone, so it's like like I can't type on a touchscreen. It is really the size of the touchscreen. Because it is so narrow it makes the digital keyboard long and thin. Just slows me down a little, but definitely not a deal breaker.
I haven't had to deal with customer service, but the book selection is smaller than the Kindle. I am sure that will change through time. They don't have the Harry Potter books which I thought was strange. It is a lot faster than it was before and certainly faster than the Kindle. It's a little heavier than the Kindle, but not by much. You can also upgrade the memory and change the battery which the Kindle does not offer. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Absolutely. Especially if you plan on carrying it in a purse or briefcase or any type of bag. Too much pressure on the e-iink screen will result in a cracked screen.
Seriously thought the intro said "I am groget man" when I was reading it.

BUT if I had to make a choice, I'd choose the Nook, or a Sony PRS-series, because they can read Epub/open format Ebooks, whereas the Kindle cannot until you hack it with some third-party reader/converter software.

wait wait so you nedd to be connescted to a wire less router to go to the book store?
twitbit23 2 years ago
@twitbit23 No, just happened to be connected to a WIFI network, it does also connect over AT&T cellular service when WIFI is not available and vice versa.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
can u use a stylist on it?
AZBA11in 2 years ago
yes ucan.
schildty12345 2 years ago
@AZBA11in You can use a capacitive pen on it, but really with such a small screen I would not recommend it. Your finger should do just fine.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
does it cost money to shop wirelessly off of the nook? (meaning just to look, not definately buy)
and do you have to pay for wifi when you're not at barnes and noble? i know that they have free wifi but i cant find the answer
PanicRox11 2 years ago
no no no it has 3g built in. you dont pay for anything until you push BUY on the book...
schildty12345 2 years ago
So if i am outside in a non wifi area i can buy books without being charged a data fee
PACSLeader 2 years ago
@PACSLeader YES! its uses cells like a cell phone.... anywhere u get a cell phone bar from sprint u can get books or go online. NO CHARGE!!
schildty12345 2 years ago
@schildty12345 This unit runs on AT&T's network, the Kindle runs on sprint.

Is the only way to purchase e-books on the Nook through credit card? Or can you buy gift cards for them at the actual store or something...?
jrad10x10 2 years ago
The kindle dosen't support an open format such as epub. Amazon have also deleted books from the kindle without asking. Search new york times website for "Amazon Erases Orwell Books From Kindle"
Please consider an e-reader that supports open formats such as epub. This includes sony's, the nook and many others.

how can i download ebooks purchased from other online stores?
ca01119 2 years ago
Depending on the format, they haven't come up with a converter yet for kindle books, but I'm sure it's on the way. But of course it does not support AMZ files (Amazon). Below are the supported file types.
EPUB
PDB
PDF
Other Sources
EPUB (Non or Adobe DRM)
PDB (Non DRM)
PDF
Graphics: JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP
Audio: MP3

Thanks for the review. I've been trying to decide between the Kindle and Nook and it looks like the Nook handles PDF's better than Kindle.
tonyend2001 2 years ago
@tonyend2001 Yeah it does, more options.

Which exact case is that?

Can you go to a certain part of the book? Like is there the table of contents for the book you are reading and can you skip around the book without going through page by page?
andrew8768 2 years ago
@andrew8768
Yes, your options are Furthest reading point, Cover, and chapter. If you lay bookmarks you can go to those too.

I'm sorry to have made you sad. Honestly I had to be quiet as to not disturb anyone else. I will be sure to be more energetic next time. Thank you for your comment. :)

iamgadgetman 2 years ago
is there still a long formatting delay when opening a book? if so does it do that each time you load the book? or just the first time? great review thanks
joe4ska 2 years ago
@joe4ska It only does the formatting the first time, after that it is nice and quick.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
when you bought your nook, when they email you and say expected ship date do they mean that it's the day the nook will arrive?
ourhorridmistake 2 years ago
@ourhorridmistake I'm sure thats the day they 'expect' they will drop it in the mail. and whatever delay there is in the shipping method will push the delivery date past that.
joe4ska 2 years ago
i bought the nook because i would rather by an EBOOK reader from an BOOKSTORE than an internet store...
Carlosisexisting 2 years ago
I feel the same way.
MsVideoWatcher100 2 years ago
If you like more in the way of gadgets, go with a nook. If you're more of reader go with kindle. That's really what it comes down to. If read the reviews they are so neck and neck. The kindle cover opens like a book though so you don't have to slide it out.
For both though, a cover is more than necessary
Hal891 2 years ago
GadgetMan you are the coolest. It really slides in and out of that sleeve nicely.
jeffathisputer 2 years ago
Gadgetman, Thanks for the review. I had heard that once the LCD is in its sleep mode that you an sweep on the LCD to turn pages while reading. I tried it on the instore display model but could not make it work. Could you try it with yours and post a short vid if it works?
thhighwayman 2 years ago
Yes, actually this is true. You have to do it really fast. Almost as if you were "flipping" through pages. It took me a moment to figure that out. I guess you might have been doing it too slow? It is kind of silly really since you have four tactile buttons to change pages. I think it is more of a gimmick.Plus if you tap it just slightly the LCD screen turn back on and that function is disabled.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
Oh shoot, another thing. I heard a rumor that the nook has backlighting for the e-ink screen, in case you get caught without a light source. Any truth to this?
Iiquidiai 2 years ago
No, there is no backlight.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
Thank you very much for the review GadgetMan. I was wondering if you had an opportunity to use the dictionary on the nook? And if so, how well does it work? I had the chance to test the Kindle and the dictionary was very easy to use on it -- hoping it will be the same with the Nook.
Iiquidiai 2 years ago
@Iiquidiai Takes more clicks than the Kindle to look up a word. It doesn't preview the definition like the kindle, it actually takes you out of what you are reading into the dictionary.

I am debating between this and the Kindle. I have heard that B&N has the "intention" of the Nook being able to use apps, social networking, etc... Have you heard anything about this? Also, when putting Google Books on this, do you need to sync the device with your computer or will it download them through wifi?
Good Review.
perfdavid 2 years ago
Well, I am unsure if B&N's intention is for the unit to be anything more than an E-reader, but I do know that hackers have already rooted it. This enables things like web browsing and RSS feeds. That's the beauty of this thing and something that the Kindle will never have, Android. Once people take advantage of the Android OS the game is over for Amazon's Kindle. As far as the Google Books, they are readily available in the B&N store and I have already downloaded a few. Works great!
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
Oh one thing, how do I download music? Do I download it through the computer using the usb cord?
tichondriis 2 years ago
@tichondriis Yes, through the USB cable. Just drag and drop. ;)
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
Good review, thank's for posting the video, i'm getting my nook around January 7th.
tichondriis 2 years ago
Also, do the screens have anything between them? Any piece of hardware like plastic?
ZutaMtian 2 years ago
@ZutaMtian Yes, there is a black strip of plastic with a small iPhone like button.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
I'm happy that now witht the update, the screen refreshes faster. I was a bit unsure about that at first, especially when I saw a video comparing this and Kindle. It was way slower.
Do you think that touch screen is hard to navigate? When I look at it in a video, it's hard for me to imagine using/scrolling through that. It looks too thin... Maybe it's different in real life?
ZutaMtian 2 years ago
@ZutaMtian The touch screen just takes some getting used to. It is rather thin for the scrolling feature. Especially since most of the lists are only one more deep, so the scrolling is kind of rediculous.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
would you recommend this over the kindle? i really like the nook because it looks cooler. looks matter to me about an eReader but is the e ink display better on either one of these devices? i really need to know because i am ordering either this or the kindle in a few days.
willard1300h 2 years ago
@willard1300h Yes, I would. The Nook has a better display.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
I recently purchased the Amazon Kindle and was unhappy with the keyboard and I am now returning that for a Nook which I will hopefully get by February. One of the things that I do like about the Kindle was variety of images that appear when putting it into "sleep" mode. I know this is a silly thing and not very important, but I was wondering if the Nook also did this.
heidishoshana 2 years ago
@heidishoshana how do you return kindles? do you just mail them back? i am just 15 so i dont really know.
willard1300h 2 years ago
@heidishoshana The Nook also shows a slideshow of images like the Kindle.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
Im just wondering how you go about paying for the books you want? Do you put in your credit card numbers and all that stuff when you first get it so when you find what you want it has the info?
steveb234 2 years ago
I might order this early next week so I can get it Feb 1 (hopefully) so I am jealous of you!
How do you like this compared to the Kindle? How is their customer support and ebook selection?
The Nook looks way faster now with the new firmware! This now changes things completely, at first I thought it was too laggy but not anymore.
CandysAllMediaReview 2 years ago
Coming from the Kindle, I would say it takes some getting used to. Having two screens is cool, but not having a tactile keyboard is not. Don't get me wrong I have an iPhone, so it's like like I can't type on a touchscreen. It is really the size of the touchscreen. Because it is so narrow it makes the digital keyboard long and thin. Just slows me down a little, but definitely not a deal breaker.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
I haven't had to deal with customer service, but the book selection is smaller than the Kindle. I am sure that will change through time. They don't have the Harry Potter books which I thought was strange. It is a lot faster than it was before and certainly faster than the Kindle. It's a little heavier than the Kindle, but not by much. You can also upgrade the memory and change the battery which the Kindle does not offer. Let me know if you have any more questions.
iamgadgetman 2 years ago
Im most likely getting it for Christmas do you recommend getting a case for the nook?
loungo1567 2 years ago
Absolutely. Especially if you plan on carrying it in a purse or briefcase or any type of bag. Too much pressure on the e-iink screen will result in a cracked screen.
