im sorry bur justin beiber is nothing compared to john lennon, i was born in 92 so i jave grown up in a pop culture but i can tell you that back in the day was true music, everythings fake now days, john lennon and the bands of his time were real, justin beiber is a joke and so is his fans, pull up your pants to kid
@mxridr85 why would you even say that? obviously justin bieber is not anywhere close to the genius of john lennon. no one thinks he is, no one with half a fucking brain will ever think that. you are just saying that so you will either get likes on your comment, or so you can get some false sense of comradery. either way you insulted the man by posting that comment. and all i have to say is you can truly go fuck yourself
I was in the trucks doing MNF on this day. The announcement almost did not get on the air as Howard did not think our MNF telecast was the correct avenue to announce this.
And he would have been right, had he withheld the announcement. Yoko Ono wanted the news to be kept silent until she informed their son, wanting him not to learn of his father's death via television. Unfortunately, Alan Weiss, an ABC reported who was hospitalized at Roosevelt hospital earlier that day, caught wind and fucked everything up. What some people do to boost their rating is DESPICABLE. This had no place in a football game, and Howard Cosell should be ashamed.
@whathappened020 oh quit being a whiney drama queen, Howard himself had the respect of Lennon and stated in this clip how insignificant a football game is in the bigger picture of life, and i doubt Howard knew wheter or not the sons knew already, but it nots like Julian woulda been any happier, especially after he walked right past his own dads blood that nite, get off your fucking moral high horse
31 years ago today, me and my friend and our girlfriends went into manhatten to party, we were in the village when we heard on the radio john lennon was shot. we raced uptown to w,72nd st.and central park west. there was a crowd already,i pushed my way up to the barricade and saw johns blood on the ground in the entryway, i went back and hugged my girl, we stood there in the cold crying, i saw a cop next to me crying too, i realized it was the end of an era for rock n roll, for all mankind.....
beiber is nothing compared to Lennon and The Beatles. he will never see the light of what a true musician is like Lennon McCartney, Harrison and Starr did. Beatles Forever. Beiber is Never.
I have always wondered, given the period and how news spreads faster than anything nowadays since most everyone has a phone that tells that what is going on, how many people at the game knew of it at the time of the announcement. Probably not many, besides those in the booths/media.. I was very young when this happened but the Beatles are one of my favorites, and it is quite sad to watch.
No disrespect intended, but this was largely John's his fault. He was told a zillion times to hire security for protection, especially in NYC where the crime rate was one of the worst in the country in the early 1980's. He flat out refused and subsequently painted a bulls eye on him.
He simply wasn't practical enough and unfortunately paid for that decision with his life. To me that is being irresponsible to your family, which should always be priority one.
@mrceebees14 i disagree, he didnt have a bullseye on him, and i know how you mean that. its not like he had attempts on his life every day, he never had someone try to kill him before, granted, NYC was a dangerous place, but so was every major city. he had to leave england because people wouldnt leave him alone, he loved NY because he could walk the streets without people bothering him, if someone wants too kill you, like chapman, he will, it would've happened anywhere, you cant stop a maniac!
@jroxx11211 He didn't have a bullseye on him? That is why he was told time and time again to get security? I am not talking about a rent-a-cop, I am talking about Presidential security officers who he could have easily afforded. Chapman or anyone would have never gotten close enough to him, but Lennon said no, he wanted to be accessible. He paid with his life for that choice, to say he wasn't a target is insane, I was in New York when this happened, people mobbed him EVERYWHERE.
@jroxx11211 Loving the place you live in is great and all, but New York is 1980 was NOT a place to just walk around if you are as high profile as Lennon was. People wouldn't leave him alone where ever he went, to say he was not mobbed every second is totally incorrect, I saw it with my own eyes, the man was constantly mobbed. It only takes one person to kill you, he had a responsibility to his family to stay safe, instead he chose what he wanted, so be it......he was cremated.
@mrceebees14 but then again it goes back to the fact that it was his life to live, even if he did have a family, he lived his life the way he wanted to live it, to have a security detail follow him 24/7 would have been an intrusion he couldnt take, obviously, since im sure he weighed all the options, im sure yoko brought up the subject, he made the decision he wanted to make, we all die, living your life the way you want on your terms is your god given right, nobody can tell you how to do it.
@jroxx11211 Sorry, hurting my family is the last thing you would ever do, without family you have nothing. But I guess everyone is different, but I would have expected much different from a guy who preached love and happiness for decades ala John Lennon.
@mrceebees14 Obviously he made a huge mistake, im sure he didnt have a death wish, he loved life and his family, he just released his best solo work and was coming into his own as a musician and a man, i was in grenwich village that night with my girl and friends, we heard what happened on the radio, we raced uptown to the dakota, i pushed past a cop and saw his blood on the ground by the entryway, everybody was crying, even some of the cops too, we stood there in disbelief, crying in the cold.
I was born several minutes after the interruption in the game. My father said he still remembers watching TV in the hospital room when it came on and then me being born 3 minutes later. :(
I could just imagine hearing this on tv, and like getting the knotted feeling in your stomach... there will never be another one like john lennon :( Rest in Peace
According to Frank Gifford when interviewed on the Howard Stern show, Howard Cosell didn't even want to interrupt the game with this horrific announcement
@TLPFAS i was i manhatten on dec 8 1980, my friends and i were hanging out downtown in greenwich village when we heard on the radio that john was shot, we raced uptown to the dakota, i pushed my way past a cop and saw johns blood on the ground, everybody was crying, even the cops were crying. my girlfriend and i just stood there in total disbelief, cold, with tears streaming down our faces, i waws only 20 but i knew right there that it was the end of an era, for rock n roll and for all mankind.
Why the hell did they have a "duty" to announce Lennon's death during a live televised broadcast of a football game with 3 seconds left to play? They could've waited for a fucking commercial break at least.
I think it was macabre to dump tragic news like this out of nowhere when it's not a real emergency, and it's only about getting the "scoop" over the other networks and nothing else.
Found this on TV Tropes: "The original writer of the story (WarGames) said that he wanted Falken to be played by John Lennon, and Lennon was reportedly interested in the role. Alas, of course, one Mark David Chapman insured that this would never come to pass."
@Songediter2000 I was watching the game that night and it was indeed like a punch in the chest...so utterly out of the blue...To this day I cant see or hear mention of MNF without thinking about it for at least a second or two....
@Songediter2000 heartbreaking indeed. Its no different than me, being a Pink Floyd fan, collapsing having a seizure the very moment that they announced the death of Syd Barrett. Something like that shooting would lead to the orchestrating of death metal / heavy metal, the official end to the peace movement.
@pinworms70 Honestly at this point in time..John Lennon may have been the most famous person in the world, most people were fans..it was was definitely a "where were you" moment like Kennedy, 9/11, etc..
And the weird bit? He announced it just as the kicker John Smith came on the field. Why is this weird? John Smith was the only Englishman in the NFL back then.
What was Cosell saying at the beginning of this video? "... but it's suddenly been placed in total perspective for us. I'll finish this, they're in a hurry-up offense." Anyone know what he was saying before this?
@o0oJackBauero0o Right, I know. Just wanted to see if anyone knew exact words. It's surreal watching and listening to this. Must've been just unreal hearing this.
Cosell's words are right. But the way he said it with no change in his tone of voice is remarkable. He could have said it with maybe a LITTLE commiseration.

No, it didn't matter who won or lost, not only because John Lennon got taken before his time for nothing, but neither team made the postseason that year.
