  • hola saludos desde panama city panama soy camionero buen motor que caballaje tiene y los diferenciales me gustaria que explicara mas detalladamente como cambiar los 16 belocidades

  • Googled Lloyd Davies and this popped up, have watched the videos before and just scanned the text. Lloyds old banger? got a photo somewhere of that one at the Melbourne Truck show with the engine hoisted out of the frame on the Kenworth stand. Top bloke by the way met him many years later.

  • @4800fx Lloyd's old truck. I've got the same photo. It's a little different to when he owned it.

  • Just looked your serial no. (prefix 28V) up on TMI (Cat's Technical Marketing Info site). Must be getting on a bit as it's only got 3408Bs from 444bhp to 503bhp. 503's have a Full load speed of 2100 and torque of 1585lb-ft of torque at 1400rpm - probably your sweet spot I reckon. "Red line" is at 2287rpm - pretty high for one of these!

They don't have these in NZ - no large loads allowed - not like Aussie anyway.

    Cheers,

    Drafty01.

  • @Drafty01 Cat tool #5P7335 gave me 550HP at the wheels @ 1900 RPM on Cat's dyno or about 600HP at the engine. I usually drive @ 1600 RPM which was 520 HP at the wheels.

  • @gm16v149 Lovely sounding motor, and the scenery great.

Out of interest, how many litres of fuel do you get for 1500 dollars?

  • @herefordmsv Diesel fuel is $1.43 a litre in Melbourne right now so I'll let you do the maths.

  • @gm16v149 So 1500 dollars buys you 1048 litres. In the UK diesel is double that price (in UK pounds its £1.40 near me right now), but I'm guessing fuel was cheaper for you too at one time.

  • @gm16v149 what kind of torque does that kit give you

  • @MattytheDem I'm not sure because the HP has been upped a fair whack.

  • Holy Cow! That would be quite a squeeze, getting a 3408 into a truck. I'm picking this would have had to have the cab under side modified to fit it in. I work for a CAT dealer in NZ, so know how big and heavy these are. What's the engine serial no?

  • @Drafty01 It is a very tight fit but that was the original engine. I don't think KW changed the cabs. The starter motor and oil cooler are very hard to get at. The highway engines have got a different turbo mounting to the earthmovers. 28V3137. It was an 'A' motor but we changed to 'B'. Also turbo updated.

  • Hello, what kind of fuel mileage do you get fully loaded?

  • @ANDREASRIAL Varies a bit but about 3.7 mpg fully loaded @ 180,000 pounds

  • Muito bonito este camião. Que partida hen?

  • What HP is she? A very nice old truck mate. Keep on trucking safe aye.

  • @tc2595 About 600 at the flywheel.

  • How many kms does your Kenworth have?

  • @svg1995 5.5m kms.

  • Hey great machine, I am a sports car racer from Florida who has a secret desire to drive one of these!

  • Would it be possible for an American to get a job driving in Australia? If so, how would he go about it?

  • @w9driverby Not sure about that ..I would suggest email the Australian embassy in U.S.

  • Great video, keep it up

  • Good stuff

  • g/day 16v like ur vids and the ole cabover mate i got one to,like ur pyro haven't seen one like that in years been tryin to get one but no luck yet especially from useless gilbert and u know who in sydney anyway safe truckin mate.

  • @yogisgone I bought that pyro / turbo pressure guage about 25 yrs ago for my 1st KW and it was expensive then but it is real quality and works like new. Made by Isspro in the US, not like the cheap VDO ones they've got now. You should get one on Ebay if you look hard enough or maybe contact Isspro.

  • What type of radios do you use for communication? In North America, drivers use C.B.s (I've seen the brand name 'Corba' on most CBs).

  • @jmm2000 We use UHF radios which are much clearer than the 27 meg. CBs that I think you guys still use in the states. Uniden is the most popular brand which is made in Australia. Also a lot of us have got satellite phones because the mobile phones don't have a lot of coverage outside of the settled areas.

  • @gm16v149 Most drivers use UHF radios here but they're usually for companies and businesses. The dump truck I drive for a railway company has a Kenwood radio and the boom crane truck I also drive has a Motorola radio. Both trucks have CBs installed and is mainly use while driving on the highway and the Kenwood/Motorola radios are used for work.

  • Im American and I never thought I'd see rain in the Australian desert lol. nice truck by the way

  • @SeaDollarsBertram Half the east coast is flooded at the moment but yeah, we don't get much rain out on the Nullarbor Plain.

  • Another great video mate, Would you be able to do a video showing how you shift down gear

  • @MrKenwortht908 Check out my vid How to Shift Spicer 16 speed, although I am going up the gears in that.

  • i got a question whats the metal guard looken thing around the windshield for i see it on most australian trucks

  • @CrackinVTEC666 Helps stop stone chips on our 2 lane outback roads.

  • @gm16v149 wow the stones fly up that high only thing we have to worry bout here in the states is the damn skeeters and when ya hit the wipers they just smear and you cant see lol thats okay when you stop at the truckstop the birds come up for a buffet style feeding on your truck lol

  • what's the hp on a stock 18L ?

  • @straightpipesrule 450 HP was the original setting but it's now about 600.

  • This is one awesome video. Gotta love the air starter. THis is kick ass

  • Just came back for another visit. I always enjoy coming back to this video and watching it again. Tonight I'm also going to share it with my Facebook friends.

  • 90 mile straight, i wonder how many drivers have fell asleep on that road.

  • 1:53 = quick get off the road it a bunker's truck coming. lol

  • @CUTCAT55 Hmmm......!!

  • @gm16v149 sorry mate i use to drive for them and some of the drivers they let behind the wheel are very scary and i would all but run off the road to get away from them. i will remove the comment if you would like me to.

  • @CUTCAT55 No I was kind of agreeing with you because about the only drama I've ever had on the road has been with them.....but being such a big company they are going to have more drivers that are sus.

  • Gotta love the air starters!

  • 3.7 diffs is that with a direct gearbox or overdrive im not sure about spicers but with a double overdrive roadranger 3.7 diffs would be doing about 1350 revs at 100 kilometres to high geared for a most road train work

  • 100k's in O/D is 1600 rpm and 95 k's in direct is 1800 rpm.

  • Fantastic video.

    Greetings from Canada. :)

  • yall got sum real nice and wide roads!

  • I drive a Canadian version of a road train. I have always wanted to come to Australia and try the big ones! Great video, thanks for posting.

  • unreal,Lloyd Davies old truck.thought it was ex co ord or time.I have a 82 aerodyne 115 ton rated ,siver 475 92 ,16 spicer ,dt 480p,5.29,3.7.was in oct 83 truckin life.they dont make trucks like this anymore.loud & proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • shit i was happy with a 425 3406b model that hauled ass. make s it look like a sports car v-8 vs a 3cid geo. i pull 45 tons max. thats law down here but some day may be il haul weight

  • Brings back memories. The really boring part was going back from Perth to Port Augusta with the empty trailers doubled up.

Not many trucks used the 3408, only ever heard of a handful in Oz in 20 years. Simon Kerswells K100 - 3408 was rumored to be able to suck windcsreens out when overtaking.

  • Nice vid! How were your EGT's climbing that grade going flat out? Do they ever get to the point were you have to back off? Whats an exceptable EGT for that engine?

    Thanks!

  • I don't like it to go over 900 deg C, I just keep the throttle where the engine won't deliver any more power like you do on any mech. injected Cat engine.

  • Okay cool, thanks for the info!

  • the europen trucks sleepers are gettin bigger like the scania longline and the volvo xxl btw what horsepower is your cat

  • 600 HP

  • Thats just like scania v8. But this sounds better.

  • don't forget that scania longline is not produced anymore, and FH's XXL are only available in the scandinavian countries and in The Netherlands. As always in Europe its all about regulations and law;/

  • Thats not right at all....

There are some Truckbuildersin Europe that will build you your Longline the way you want it.

The Longline Never was build from Scania direkt.

It was build from Laxa´, an Special Vehicles Builder.

    Have an nice day.

    BTW:

    Great Videos an cool Truck

    5/5

    Scania V8 Greets!

  • Nicely done demo of OTR ops here! BTW, is this truck equipped with the Eaton-Fuller RTLO-22918B, as I suspect the case to be from the Caterpillar V8? And with what axle ratios?

  • Update: I found out from earlier Comments that no RTLO is aboard---how strong a Spicer PSPO or TSPO is needed for a 3408 Cat?

  • My Spicer is 1600 ft.lbs which is OK as long as you're careful in the lower gears. Diffs are 3:7 ratio.

  • Hey Chris,

My dad does double tankers between Melbourne and Sydney and I go with him whenever I can...But watching your clips makes me want to go with you so much! Hahaha

    Cheers ;)

  • You should do a video on how to hook up and unhook a roadtrain

  • exactly! will be awesome

  • Whats the MPG on those things. That speed with that much weight at that many rpm's on hills :p

  • About 4 mpg with 2 trailers.

About 3 mpg with 3 trailers.

  • Gm.

    That's imperial gallon, right.

  • yes

  • How come i do'nt see any Scania,Volvo,MAN,DAF,Mercedes, etc.road trains in your video's?????? They cost the same as Mack's KW Petes. Nice boat engine 149's

  • Why ? Mainly because you don't see them out in the sticks !

It's mainly KW, Mack & Western Star, with the occasional Volvo or Scania pulling a roadtrain, where I go anyway.

BTW the American trucks are a lot more expensive than the European trucks out here.

  • Nice vid. I notice that you drive a KW in all of your videos. Does that mean you have a preferrence toward american trucks rather than the european trucks? Some of those european trucks look really nice. I know most truckers prefer certain makes over others, just curious to know. Do you have any idea why the american trucks are higher? Keep on trucking and videoing. As always be safe.

  • Most guys would like a bonneted American truck with a long wheelbase and a big sleeper, and that's what you mainly see in the north and west.

KW is the biggest seller in class 8 over here.

They are higher to accommodate the much bigger radiators......that's one area the euros fall down on. Also the euros have got tiny sleepers.

Volvo and Scania used to have bonneted trucks here but now they only sell cabovers.

  • Gm.

That's what we got to settle for here in Europe, 88,5 inches cabin, and we live in there for weeks, sometimes two drivers. Those regulators should have tried it themself.

  • Never get tired of this vid...keep yankin' & crankin' Chris!!!

  • nice vid jw wats it like drivin a roadtrain

  • nice vid m8!!

just out of interest, what brand and how old are your trailers?

  • '94 Barker & Southern Cross

  • ive said before V8 cat or mack is the real deal !!

  • Those air start engines are so odd.

  • now that sounds good

  • looks like an awesome ride but id rather do it in my scania v8 580 :)

  • The nullabor is such a good trip. I just got back from driving it. So much fun.

  • Man, you gotta love a KW and CAT.

  • very good video! How many horsepower this engine?

  • About 600

  • Ok! and how many kilometers per day make you with this truck? (maximum).

  • @gm16v149 - For the USA the 3408 was rated 400 or 450 hp in most Class 8 on-highway trucks. The last incarnation was the 3408B rated 450 hp and 1,450 lbf. ft. of torque.

  • You can adjust the fuel racks with Cat's adjusting tool to get whatever HP you want within reason. Mine was rebuilt as a B motor & set at 550 HP on the chassis dyno which is about 600 at the flywheel. The twin turbo marine 3408 can put out 800 HP.

  • When are you going to do a vid on how to hook up a roadtrain?

  • As a former trucker in the US I sure enjoy these videos. Might mention that trucking across North Dakota is a bit like a piece of Oz, but no road trains and plenty of truck stops!

  • We've got plenty of truckstops on the east coast, some are average but a lot of them are real good. On the west coast they are a long, long way apart.

  • Usually we split them up at the roadtrain park at Northam but this time I did it just up the road at the Meckering truckstop.

Everyone with a multi combination licence can back a trailer and dolly under the second trailer, it's backing a two trailer roadtrain onto a third trailer that will test you out.

  • Where did you split it for the run in to Perth? Was it Toodjay? If so, I was priveleged to have a ride from there to the top of a steep hill just outside if Perth in a bonnetted truck back in 2003. Never did get the driver's name but thanks to him anyway.

Also saw a trucker reverse a dolly under a second trialer at the truckstop in Weshpool. Magic stuff.

  • We saw your truck go thru Halls Creek a few months ago couldnt miss it with that big V8 sounded awsome. We thought a freight train was going thru!!!

  • In perfect phase.

  • Actually that's my brother's kid and 21,000,000 people over here wouldn't agree on your last comment !

Thanks for watching the vid, at least you watched it to the end, the start of it does go on a bit.

  • That's great getting to drive around with your kid. Like the Bull Bars (kangaroo bars). More of us over here in Pennsylvania (US) should have them for deer.. Nice truck, good vid.. Just one thing, you're driving on the wrong side of the road.

  • Nullaboring...

  • Awesome!

    How much HP is it?

  • like 600hp

  • i know one guy in melbourne with a v8 cat in an aerodine and boy has that got some grunt in it

  • whats his name

  • i think the best type of cabover would be with a kenworth k100e aerodyne with a v8 cat

  • What year is your rig? Pretty sweet, but why a cabover?

  • 1980. KW in Australia only fitted the 3408 engines to cabovers and that's the engine I wanted.

  • how many cabovers did they make with v8cats in 'em

  • About 30 in oz

  • great work again!! can't wait to be able to drive ! doing runs with triples throughout WA and the nullabor would be tops !!

  • Nicely filmed. Enjoyable trip without leaving home. I'm curious to your moniker. Deep down a DD 2 stroke fan?

  • You could say that. I've owned them and worked with them in the past.

  • how many gears and whats the low range setup for?

  • 16 gears

  • damn and I thought my 9 was confusing lol. good job man and keep it up

  • Hav'nt driven a cabover in years, always thought they were fun to drive, very nice truck, nice video.

  • A conventional would be better but I can't be bothered going into hock again for a new truck !

  • Over here going into hock is what we call the American dream.

  • most trucks would be down gearing but you getting faster up eucla

  • great video ...just loved it !!

  • ? do you guys change your own tires out there our do you have a service come out and how soft is the shoulder have a good one

  • Don't have much tyre probs but yes we change our own. Nearest tyre dealer could be 100's of miles away. On the Nullarbor if it's wet you just don't get off the road.

  • nice vid congrats gotta tell you around here is complicated to see roads trains but the australians are among the best drivers in the world and hauling pipe is always a challenege

  • Nice, I cart around their crane bodies when the stripped down bits go on to semi-trailers.

  • how come your haulin your dolly around? the film is great as i get older my appercation for cab overs grows you just see less and less of,em nice to see some who enjoys what he does and it shows

  • Just like to keep the gear together as there are a few places where you can assemble a road train around Perth.

  • looks like your carting Tutt Bryants boom section in the Eucla climbing part, top vid dude :)

  • Yeah, it was, the counterweights and boom sections went from Perth to Port Adelaide.

    50 tonne payload all up.

  • heard the air start now if you run out of air does it have a hand pump so you can start?

  • We carry an airline and hook up to a couple of tyres.

Hardly ever happens if you keep everything in good order.

  • Nice sounding kenny you got there mate, my dream is to do some experience of trucking in places other than the UK!! praps in the USA and come over to Aussie land to do some proper trucking.....

  • nothing quite like a cat, 18 spd?

  • Spicer 16 spd

  • nice

  • what kind of manifold pressure will she pull? even when you ease into it she puts out quite a hays of smoke. Nice to see someone appreciate a piece of equipment and use it, not abuse it.

  • 20 psi max.

It blows smoke after an engine start because the air-fuel valve won't work until you've done a few gear changes.

Don't get that problem with electronic engines.

  • I envy you guys over there, ya'll probably don't have to put up with half the crap that that we do!!! awesome vid!!

  • Trust me, we put up with plenty of crap over here !

  • does it have jake brakes

  • No, it's got a Caterpillar Brakesaver which is a hydraulic retarder.

  • I think a 18 Litres engine is not so much for the mega great australian trucks. But In the 70s, the German Busbuilder Auwärter Neoplan built the Neoplan Jumocruiser with Mercedes V12 engine an 20.9 Litres. And for the new Autobahnen in Nazigermany ( In the 30s), Highspeed-Travelcoaches was planed with Mercedes V12 Panzermotors and 55 Litres engines!!! But the ww2 stop this projects.

  • I agree that the germans have always had amazing techology, but there is always something that technology takes away from the magic of a raw drive, a bare & basic road ranger gear box and a super charged engine. When things get too automated, there is no fun anymore

  • that pass is about like Black Moutain in north carolina in the US we get behind trucks on that hill that go 4 mph. even our pick up truck can only do 35 mph. what does that screen on the front of you truck do?

  • It's a mesh stone guard, most long- haul trucks in Australia have got them.

Our roads away from the cities are two lane and it saves the windscreen from stones kicked up from vehicles coming the other way.

  • thanks just wondering.

  • nice, yeah the mack i drive goes good im sure the pump has been played with coz it bellows so much smoke every shift

  • so how many horses, does it have a jake brake, single twin turbo...i drive an 85 R600 525 V8 mack myself its got a EA9 block 610 with 500 heads tho

  • It's a standard 3408 truck engine with a CAT hydraulic Brakesaver, fuel racks set to give 550 HP at the wheels.

  • verry nice vid. i drive a v8 16 liter my self (scania) but i don't think it will last 1 month out there down under hahaha.. great engine that cat. show us more please. thanks

  • nice, i got to give it to you for that, but can you feel the #2 wagon, can you tell that its there

  • Wagon = trailer ?

Well, there's an extra 36 ton and 5 axles hanging off the back so yes, you know it's there

  • well keep up the good work, but that v8 sounds damn good

  • yes wagon =trailer

  • Hey Chris, been sending your vids home to my brother Lyle...my Daddy lives with him now, so I share your vids with him, as well as what kind of powerplant you got. I told him about these engines, the kind of horses I can pull out of them & how I want to power tune mine when I get it (over 1,000hp & 10,000+ ft/lbs of torque @ 1,350RPM) & set the governor @ 2,000RPM, or right @ the peak before the torque levels off.

  • wow that was awsome a 90mile straight? i could get some serious speed out there! We dont have that cool stuff in america. nice rig i like kenworth and peterbilts mostly

  • You wouldn't believe it but there's a 110 kph ( 70 mph) speed limit and traffic cops sometimes get out there with radar

  • Wow wouldnt exspect that

  • Another great video, who would wanna drive trucks anywhere else when we have the best trucks right here!!!!

  • Great Video!!!

I am fascinated the country and the long road.

    Every trip an adventure.

Thanks you Chris, for a ride.

  • I guess all this is the exact opposite to what you are used to in Europe .

  • Nice...very nice.

  • haha i mean.... i'm a fan***

  • very nice... in a fan

  • Uh , don't drink and type !

  • good advice... nice truk mate

  • I really fuckin love heavy machinery. lol Nice vid!

  • Nice video. I always liked the Aussie trucks!

  • How much power does it have?

  • About 600. Been juiced up a bit.

550 at the wheels on the dyno.

  • Got Pipe.

  • the 555 Cummins was a two stroke.I met the guy who owned that Cabover about12 years ago,,,on my one and only trip to Perth.

How you going A-B,,,if thats still your truck.

  • No, it is a 4 stroke.

Mine is Bourne's cousin's old truck.

Bournes truck is painted green now, still getting around with a B-Double.

  • Great video, well shot. was that northam roadtrain park you droppped the trailer in?? I was out in Perth in 1997 and used to assemble trailers there. worked for Centurion driving their tri-drive Western Stars, we were trialing out asome eletronic engine stuff. Great experiance, best driving time of my life, would die to go back again some day. sadly i returned to the UK and gave it all up. just wasn't the same. Take care mate !!

  • I left the second trailer and dolly at Meckering roadhouse just up the road from Northam because it was getting late and I wanted to get the first one in without the hassle of the dolly hanging off the back.

Normally you'd park at Northam and take the first trailer and dolly in.

I went to England about 10 years ago and there is a big difference in the trucking scene !

  • Wow thanks for the quick reply. Trucking here's finished,I gave it up and went into marina maintenance. Still miss the driving (not like Aus) The nearest i get these days is driving my Land Rover with a trailer :):)

  • Love that thumper

Sounds like a 20 speed spicer??

  • 16 speed Spicer Pro Shift

  • sweet truck sounds amazing

  • Interesting sound. Im not used to 4 stroke V8's. The only v8's im used too is the detroits. The 8v92's and the 8v71's. Pretty nice video by the way.
