Despite knowing what the ancestor was, we nonetheless know we share it. Everything alive shares a significant portion of its DNA, and we can use basic paternity tests to find out who's related most closely to who, and in what orders to nest the genetic tree of life. We shouldn't expect everything to share so much DNA without a common ancestor.

Actually, it should. Every surface of our planet is teeming with life, so it would be rather difficult for any emerging life to establish itself in its environment, competing against other life forms that have 3.7 billion years on them.
It also might be much more difficult for life to arise in the same way in our (oxygen-rich) environment.
This is why NASA is interested in Europa, Saturn, and Mars.
Are you suggesting life formed more than once? That might be possible, but all life uses ATP, the same 4 molecules in their DNA, and the same combinations of 3 letters to produce the same 20 amino acids, so it would be rather unlikely unless there were some reason that this arrangement is MUCH more easily formed than any other arrangement. It is only a matter of simple chemistry and thermodynamics, initially.

I recommend a book, Evolution, by Edward Larson. It should help you understand the punctuated equilibrium of population dynamics. Simply put--evolution occurs in short, rapid bursts brought on by environmental factors or novel mutations.
That said, there would be many fossils left of an organism in a set genetic position, but very few fossils from the relatively short period of transition.

Actually, it should. Every surface of our planet is teeming with life, so it would be rather difficult for any emerging life to establish itself in its environment, competing against other life forms that have 3.7 billion years on them.
