  • Your video sounds like it is aimed at 5 year olds.

  • @m0bob it is.

  • I blame all those hammy DJs ........

  • hams don't broadcast .....

  • Any Lid can lob snarks at someone honestly trying to help others get a handle on our arcane hobby, but it takes a genuine Amateur Extra to cite chapter and verse about how to use test equipment to demonstrate superiority. Nice work.

  • Thank you sir for your time and your energy in making this video. I am slowly getting into ham radio and have been part of the CB days way back when. As for the all knowing commenters on this blog, why not put your talents to work and make some videos yourself or better yet, get off your lazy dead ass and put down the diet coke and reach out to your community and give some instruction. Oh, wait, I failed to see before but it is clear now...you ARE doing the best you can do. God help America.

  • grande africa, Invetou a polvora.

  • Hey, 15 years of being a licenced amateur and now I've finally learned how to plug an antenna into a badly mounted beaten up old antenna.

Gee, thanks Expert Village Idiot !

  • i hope this antenna handle 1.21 jiggawatts - so you can travel back to 2008 and cut your nails, and repair the antenna before you record this video.

  • Don't be so harsh people!!!

    But... Broadcast?! *facepalm*

  • I'd like to hook that antenna to a antenna analyzer and see what the SWR is with that broken element. I would also place a bet that the antenna pattern is skewed with the bent director. The losses with the feedline he is using would probably give it as much gain as the stock antenna that came with the HT. Skin effect on 440 MHz and such. I would like to know what contest he is doing with 5 watts FM.

  • Thank you very much.

  • oh christ he's a god fan for sure

  • this guy is a total faggot moron. if i lived next door i would blast him with microwave radiation and fry his radios

  • Ham Radio is awesome.

    I love it.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • I bet he plays classical guitar. thats why he has the nails

  • Broadcast?! ...well, that's an odd expression for making QSO-s. 73

  • i thought RG-8 coax is 75 OHM tv coax .......the antenna has a 50ohm feedpoint ...that not good missmatch between the coax he use and the antenna feedpoint.....

  • This is too funny. Of all of the practical things to show your audience and mind you, being able to gain lost viewership thanks to ExpertVillage in the amateur radio community, he wastes all of 60 seconds to show you how to connect a cable to a handheld. And his fingernails are too long so those 60 seconds got wasted again.

  • This guy is a broadcaster, meaning he just transmits his signal to the world, without receiving a transmitted response. Give him a break already, he's just trying to help. If you really want to learn about ham radio, put down the MacBook and read a real book.

  • @expertvillage - look at 1:01 " 7 element beam"? ......ummmm.. I see 5 1/2 element beam! 10 year old scanner listeners know more than this guy!

  • Comment removed

  • Feeding the dipole of a Yagi like that directly with coax and no impedance matching isn't too smart. And using an antenna with directors missing isn't too smart either! The video would have been better to show how to repair the antenna, and how to feed it properly.

  • Broadcast??????? Hams DONT broadcast!!! ugh!

  • That antenna is half destroyed! LOL.

  • What a complete fucking moron. For one, like it has been said, you aren't going to have a very good pattern with a yagi missing 1/2 a director. Plus, you don't broadcast on HAM radio. Broadcasting denotes a 1-way transmission, targeting a mass audience. How did this moron ever pass a general test. Oh, that's right, and idiot with a book can. This is the kind of elmer that gives HAM radio a bad name, and should be taken behind the woodshed!

    John, NV6R

  • @kc8ntp Gotta love this hobby. LOL what a joke. No one gets along and everyone is a fucking expert.

  • @TheZeke1974 It isn't even about being an expert. This goes against the basic rules of antenna design, which ALL HAMs "should" know. I tend to get along with everybody, but I had to speak up on this one. This "Expert Village" is a joke, not the hobby. I just cannot believe this guy thought that using this yagi like this was a good idea; the pattern is probably skewed so bad, a dipole would probably do better!

  • @kc8ntp I used to be a ham but gave up on the hobby due to the "holier than thou" hams that treat the newcomers like crap. yes i did it the "old way" with the code test and all but i just didnt like how the older guys treated the new guys. If ham radio is to survive, the atitudes need to change....

  • how in the hell did you pass, its missing a el.????????????

and rg8-mini on 440 is going to have a hell of a lot of loss.

  • OK first off is this guy have a lic.?????

Your going to contest on 70cm with that thing..

    Missing a director,,,bent elements...

What kind of moron uses a director as a means to support the ant??????

    You didn't pass theory eh

Also the wonderful coax your using is about the worst thing you could use. How are you going to turn it,,,wait for a gust of DX.?? That's considering that the ant is going to work at all the way its mounted..

You are making amatuer radio folks look bad...REALLY......

  • alinco , that was my first ht

  • I agree with many of the commenters - this could have been done better.

BUT, how about geting out there and doing it, not just complaining?

Hope to have some videos out soon.

    Tom - KA0TP

  • Analyze the audience: the people who are watching this video are probably hams, so you can skip over the BNC stuff. You might also want to fix the part where you say you're ready for "broadcasting."

  • 1. one of the elements on that yagi is broken

    2. That coax and that length look kind of lossey

    3. don't mount the antenna with one on the elements.

All these factors are going to give you an awful swr. And doing 5 watts with all the loss you have there you will probably be better off with the duckie antenna.

  • After watching this video then engineers at Alinco are confused who their customer base are.

  • Comment removed

  • You have more loss in that RG-58 than gain in that broken yagi.

  • Please, PLEASE stop using the word "broadcasting." It has a legal definition that, apparently, means something totally different than you think.

"Broadcasting" is not synonymous with "transmitting."

  • His videos are better then mine.I notice one element missing.I have a beam cause i like to talk simplex most of the time csue the hams around here that own repeaters act alot lik NaZIS.

  • How one decides for the polarity of the antenna? In the video there is vertical polarity. Also, how do you decide for the antenna's direction? I mean the antenna to view East / West / Nort / South, because these antennas are directional antennas.

  • .....you can always run a massive big footwarmer - that works :)

  • Broadcast? I sure hope not.

  • I've never seen a worthwhile Expert Village video.

  • @mattrehmhext

Damn straight. The so called experts always talk about he most basic facets on the subject and provide no real information that isn't already common knowledge.

I seriously have my doubts how these 'experts' are qualified in their individual fields.

  • You have to be kidding...no really, you are kidding...right?

  • lol you can for sure work in sezame street

  • That's not how I'd personally mount a yagi and for the reason that looks obvious to me... half of one of your elements looks broken off most likely from how you're putting it into the air.

  • it looks really confusing lol

  • @dollybird18 lol is not it exciting

  • somewhere there is a village missing its idiot

  • @mikewm9v......lol dude....

  • ATTENTION: THIS IS UTTER SHITE LIKE I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE EVER.

    You sir are utterly idiotic

  • Hey Kurt that antenna ? Does it work ? 2nd director broken 4th director bent ,looks like driven element is grounded to the boom, what kind of match is that? Can't be 50 ohm and swr off the chart??? Is this a joke???????????

  • Amateur operators don't broadcast. A least they aren't supposed. They transmit to certain individuals or groups.

  • Every time you key the mike you broadcast. Don't get hung up on FFC testing terminology.

  • Dude, that's a 6 1/2 element beam. LOL. One of your elements is broken.

  • @scdevon 5 1/2 he said 7 ?????

  • Broken yagi...

  • christ, that vid is real shit. what a bunch of crap. is this for retards or what?

  • @weazlechin shut up moron.

  • its for dickheads, so you probably think its good. eh pubesteakbooby

  • yeah again...after revisiting this for a third time i have to say why is it still up? It's dangerous to other's property. A modern ht goes from 30 to 300 and even more these days, that is assuming the person building the antenna uses a walkie. If so they ruin the walkie. Guaranteed. This isn't a guess. Make that antenna and your walkie is going up in smoke. Hell...my radio shack wanna be ham antenna is rated for 2 meter and I'm guessing it needs testing....

  • I'm an expert.

This is the worst load of utter shite ever!!!

  • Hams can not broadcast. Use the word "transmit" instead.

  • i am not a ham (yet) but some of the things said are true unless you use an atu you could do damage and not a lot of us have money to throw around on a new hand held, now to listen in not problem. I like nice people and this chap sounds nice but not at the price of a new rig.

  • I agree, he sounds nice enough, probably just eager to help, the true ham spirit, but I would give him the advice of taking the time to truly learn how things work before making how to videos on them instead of (I'm guessing) doing what he saw someone else do, or saw on a how to. Gain this knowledge so you can be proud to be a ham and know what you are doing. I know EXPERT VILLAGE IS A PAYING SITE that pays for content....but believe me your video isn't worth 3000 dollars. Thats a radio price.

  • well, that beam of his, is not polarized properly for his signal to be pointing in any cardinal direction....so i'm going to be helpful rather than hurtful. So you know, if you polarize your antenna vertically then you get gain at the cost of a narrow beam vertically, oh it's still directional, but not worth it, you need to turn it on it's face, horizontally, and tadah you get something that is more usefull, unless you are tracking satellites...and then you start thinking about doing circular.

  • umm dude....i just noticed something....you're missing half an element. That's going to cause problems for you, could cause swr problems, i'm not sure, but if so it could burn up your radio....

  • You need to remove this video as you are doing more damage to the hobby than you think, and by attempting to proclaim yourself as an "expert."

    1. WHY is your coax cable kinked??

    2. That's NOT RG-8 that you have there.

    3. Technically, that antenna was NOT cut for the 70 cm band.

    4. And why is that antenna so fucked up?

    5. Don't EVER say 73's -- it is NOT the correct terminology.

You better go find your Elmer and let him knock you in the head a few times...unless he's a lid, too.

    WZ3F

  • WZ3F I could tell that you were a CBer by the use of your foul language and mannerisms. I will give you credit for obtaining the amateur extra license but then you should of used that time studying to be a gentlemen that hams are known or used to be known for till you CB'ers got a ham ticket.I also noticed how you nit picked everything wrong about the video when you should of been studying yourself. Did you read what you wrote or did you have a 11 yr old boy write it for you? 73's good buddy!!

  • I'm guessing that you're not educated enough to realize the fact that this guy is not helping you or anyone else with his very poor tutorial. That's OK -- stupid people follow stupid people.

Let me re-emphasize my use of foul language for your little girlie ears -- Go fuck yourself.

  • WZ3F Oh im educated enough to not spend my time on here like you do and criticize things that people do that arent in your standards. Did you pay someone to take that test for your license or do you think your above everyone because you got the extra class? Why not spend more time on the ham bands then in "youtube'? Why dont you leave it alone or better yet...get a life good buddy!!!

  • @WZ3F Little harsh but well put. Typical video that a LID would make.

    73 de W6CSA

  • But for all the people complaining... Go make your own video and post it as a response. At least this gentleman is making videos to post in case some one finds them useful.

  • I don't get it. Is the purpose of these videos to look as ridiculus as possible while spreading misleading dribble. A friend pointed this video out to me after saying "you have to see this crap" it is like looking at a car wreck, I just can't help myself. But I loose brain cells everytime I look at another one. Please stop or I am going to produce one on how to do a self labotomy.

  • Not impressed.

Especially the repeated use of the word, "broadcast."

Anyone who has his General ticket (so says QRZ) should know that broadcasting is prohibited for amateurs.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, especially when mixed in with misinformation.

  • Okay okay okay. LMAO.

    Dude cut your finger nails.

Also, did you think we didn't notice a director missing on your 70 cm beam?

    What was there was bent!

THIS is why Ham Radio is ailing. People like this try to spread the "word", but scare people off.

  • @Dummerd The guy may have his nails long for musical purposes, he may play the guitar or the banjo :)

  • @Dummerd yea this guy is a nasty guy cut your nails... hes prolly a pot head

  • @Dummerd Ever go to a hamfest????? if you do, take a look at the "average hams" LOL. They will make you think twice about becoming a ham really quick!!!!!! Most of them reminds me of child molesters.

  • Comment removed

  • Trolling like this is why hams identify themselves.

Best of luck with the courage that anonymity affords you, sir. Jonathan KC7FYS

  • Wow talk about talking down to people, this stuff is covered as part of the RAE! Where is this pitched? to pre-schoolers? I never comment on videos but this needed it!

  • Did this gentleman forget forget most hams are over 2 years old?

  • This is absolutely the most useless video from expertvillage that I have seen. I rarely post comments to videos, but this one is really quite bad. I have been an extra-class ham radio operator for 12 years. This video is totally worthless.

  • @rrbowker2002 oh please it's not that bad! where are your videos explaining anything?

  • That "this" is at 1:27 is called a BNC connector. and your connecting the antenna to the HT, not to the antenna (rubber ducky) ...

  • Thanks for the effort. Guess it is worth mentioning that before using transmit antenna should be checked using SWR meter or all could go up in smoke !!

  • Any radioamateur would know this. Even me, and i'm not a radioamateur yet.

  • how much do those hand held ham radio go by

  • depends on what your looking for

  • dont know anything about radio broadcasting, but this guy talks like a special needs teacher.

  • 7elements beam? Ahha..

  • hey kurt if you don't know how to do that stuff you don't need to be talking

next week he learns how to groom his self

  • nice nails kurt

  • how to determine the yagi frequency

  • It's a handie talkie!

carry a big battery and a huge yagi beam around

mount one to your hard hat and the other to your belt (fanny pack)

get a radio shack simplex repeater

stand around at all the hamfests telling everyone you're a repeater!

    peace :)

  • broadcast greater distances? According to pt 97 fcc rules broadcasting is illegal.

u should have your license revoked.

  • ma vaffanculo k cazzo di video vai a mettere!!!???? nn so la prossima volta fa kose piu sensate

  • How do you find a five and a half element Yagi performs?

    Expert?

    Moron more like.

  • And next week:

    How to change batteries...

  • someone needs to post a video respones on to trim your nails and groom

next week we show expert village how to trim and clean nails in get a life

  • What a prat!

    This guy is a Hambarasment.

  • Comment removed

  • this is retarded.

    trim your claws.

  • I'm thinking about starting my own door to door, bnc to bnc ,5.5 element solid antenna installation and finger nail clipping company..anyone know a cheap pvc supply source?..if ya do can you broadcast that info to me..and 73's'ers to ya.

  • this is brilliant. I think this guy is such an expert he must know everything about radio and he is probably a great shagger too!

  • He needs to cut his fingernails

  • yep my ht uses a SMA not a BNC

  • are the directer elements isolated from boom ?

is the antenna boom metallic or not

if it's how do we isolate antenna's elements

    thanks

  • wow you can play name in inaccuracies with this video, a lot of poor information here.

  • Sounds like an insult to the intelligence of a 5 year old.Perhaps you could make a 10 minute video detailing the intricacies of operating the On/Off button,

  • yes...hahaha

  • lmao that ham guy must have thought it was really professional, and now, the vid is out here forever making him look like a dork rofl

  • Did you happen to notice that one element is only half an element long????? ohh and great installation... Are you for real??? ohh thats right. I forgot...you are a ham..

  • Comment removed

  • note, not all HT's use BNC conectors

  • yea keep it up im a general and i find these videos very informitive

  • You notice that all the retards that said something bad were either CBers or hams from a 3rd world country. I would of loved to seen videos such as these when I was studying for my novice. Everything was new to me then and thats the point he is trying to make. If you dont like it ...DON'T WATCH IT. I watched them all and found it informative. We arent all rocket scientists like the morons who have nothing to do but bash someone else for trying to help the newcomer.

Keep up the good work Kurt.

  • Comment removed

  • I seriously think that any ham radio operator that passed at least one element would know how to do all of this. I know I knew this stuff before I took all of my tests.

  • This guy reminds me of Michael Gross from the old sit com, Family Ties....(you know, Michael J. Fox's dad)....hahahaha

<<<<<singing theme song: What would we do baby, without love.....what would we do baby, without love.....

Jesus Christ, this guy even sounds like him!!!! He was also the survival dude who was married to Reba McIntire in the movie "Tremors"!!!! hahahaha

  • Hey hamtalker, just modify your ham to use on CB frequencies!!! That's what I did with my Ranger set....works great....I walk on EVERYBODY!!!!! hahahahahahahahaha

  • To pilot: hey numb nuts...it IS broadcasting...you are just limited on the time for each one.

  • Comment removed

  • One, That is a yagi, not a beam, two, IT IS NOT BROADCASTING, BROADCASTING IS ILLEGAL ON HAM RADIO -KJ4HPV

  • are all ham radio operators old and obsessed with the hobby? because from what i see i dont think i will even bother getting my HF privilages

  • lord have mercy ham radio is geting gayer every day. increased jammers, profanety and now this. makes you want to go back to cb days again. 73 kj4aqv

  • Cut your fingernails freak, nasty . . . . .

  • Thirdly continued:

your installation, could cause property damage and injury... you may as well have built it out of lego, because you have the intelligence of a 10 year old when it comes to setting up an antenna.

YOU are the reason it is called AMATEUR radio.

  • For starters,

You are not "modifying" your handheld "HT" if you will.. by connecting an antenna to it.

Secondly, all of that "RG-8" if it even is rg-8... coiled up like that, in combination with the missing elements, and poor mounting of what you call "a directional beam antenna" I would be surprised if you could get a signal out to a repeater 20km a way..

Thirdly, what you call " A solid installation" is in fact VERY dangerous, and for lack of better wording.. "VERY VERY unsolid"

  • Can I do an Expert Village video on breathing and chewing gum at the same time?

  • ha ha ha

  • It's painfully obvious that this is meant for clueless newcomers to the hobby, or the age range of 6 to 12. RG-8 coax that looks like RG-8/mini, 73's to employ empathy with CBers, an old Yagi with a broken element, geez, I could pick this thing to death. But I think lots of people are missing the point and giving the guy a hard time for no reason other than they can. The comments look like they're mostly from the under-20 'tard crowd. I give him an "E" for effort!

  • class, ham radio is abit sad, but im gonna do this with cb and other shit.

  • Actually, I don't really believe he is trying to be patronizing. I think he really doesn't know what he is saying.

    73's to you?

73 is already plural, it means "best wishes."

So he is saying "best wishes's" to us all. Well done, tiger. 73's's's's back atcha.

  • Broadcasting? Hams broadcast? AI4QT

  • could have mounted that antenna a bit better...

  • How embarsaing, I think im gonna turn in my ham licence, and go back to the chicken band.. No wait, this still sucks for chicken banders....

  • this is great thanks for posting

  • I am a little confused about the bnc connector was it push and twist or twist and push been struggling for days with my h/t antenna.Tea bag water milk milk water tea bag bollocks i'ii have a glass of water!

  • He is really patronising, if you dont know how to remove a BNC then you shouldnt be operating a ham radio.

  • THIS GUY IS A TARD!!!!!!

  • In next weeks thrilling episode we will be teaching our granny how to suck eggs

  • i hate you

  • i haet you

  • next week he will show us how we can take a deeper bath by running the taps for longer...this guy is a real expert in bollocks!!

  • And in todays industries means he will go far!!

  • WOW THIS IS BAD ! please get this video off u tube FCC where are you ? AMATEUR AUXILIARY where are you ? this guy thinks he is BROADCASTING ! and a handfull of other bad things .and what the heck are 73ssssssssssssssss ?? like i said before , this has to go , its just wrong ! and his title is an "EXPERT" WOW!

  • hey ham radios do brodcast and its legle to mod your radio to.

  • I am not saying any thing bad but you tryed i give you credit for that 73 KJ4AQV kevin

  • 6 1/2 elements? RG-8 on 430 Mhz? - ABS pipe being used (he kept calling it PVC)? Where is proper clamp to fasten the beam. Why use 50' of feedline, where 8'-10' would do? Why is 1/2 of one of the director elements being put inside the mounting pole? This has to be a joke...doesn't it? 3's and 8's OM...

  • RG-8 for 70cm?

  • Oh forget,,,this looks like Mr.Rogers talks about anateur radio...lol!!!

  • I'm sure he will work some rare DX with that broke UHF beam...I'm still amazed at how much detail he went into about the bnc connector. I wonder how much detail he would get into if soldering a pl 259 on...What a joke!!!

  • I enjoyed it, thanks AA5KT

  • You sir, are a tool, the type that gives us hams who have paid with our sweat a really bad name. First, amateurs do NOT "broadcast." Second, I know not what sort of beam that is, but first, it has 1/2 of one element missing, which undoubtedly skews the pattern, and I guess you can't count--it originally was 6 elements. Why would you get on the air and immediately sign "QRT?" Last, there is no such thing as "seventy threes" which means, sorta, "seventy threes'sus"

  • I would love to see this guy explain how to check your standing wave.

  • this sucks... i hate expertvillage. they suck ass. they are in it for the buck... not the pleasure

  • Watch what happens when lightning strikes the external antenna. Whoa!

  • 7 element? Its 6 and a half!

How does that BNC go on again?

LOL @ 2.35, "A nice solid antenna" hahaa

    Broadcast? WTF

This HAS TO BE a joke.

    M0UKD

  • Actually its a 5 and a half!

  • how dare all you wanks take the piss...this man is a scientific genius!!!

  • wow if people didn't know how to change a bnc antenna to a bnc antenna you don't need to be transmiting i thought you were doing something more complex then show people how to change a bnc to bnc get a life!!!!!!!!

  • I some how feel less smart. The whole BNC attachment and solid mount... i'm quazared

  • I'm still studying but I like K7AGE's videos better.

  • Me too lol
