Sometimes I doubt the effectiveness of these demos. Especially if they students know it's a demo. If you bring them outside and tell them, they aren't going to believe it's real. They did one somewhere around here where they staged the accident near a bus stop, so when all the kids were arriving, they saw the extrication taking place. And for this one, I see they had someone dressed up like death....Are they really gonna take it seriously with someone dressed up like death standing there?
@Anaheimfan you have a point but stuff like what ur saying u must becareful cause it is a emotional subject they did that hear and when the kids found out it was fake the kids who paticipated in it got jumped the following week in my high school cause the yr before my friend and 2 other kids i didnt know died in a drunk driving wreck
We do a very simular simulation at the high school in our district for 2 yrs now at prom time. Both years we have done it no fatalities due to drunk driving. These programs for school kids do work
@Civieboy Thanks for your comment. I'm glad to hear it definitely helped at your school. It definitely cannot hurt for schools to have this program!!!
my friend who i knew for 11 years was killed one mile from my house by a drunk driver her boyfriend died on site she died on the way to the hospital im happy they are together she was only 18 i miss you jessica
Yes, it is a program to help juniors and seniors feel the true effects of drinking and driving, and how statistically someone dies every 15 minutes from drinking and driving.
@bellykelly53 The kids are taken to a secret place for the entire day on the day of the assembly...it is as if they truly died representing they were killed by a drunk driver every 15 minutes. It is quite effective.
They do that at my school in Colorado, it definitely has an effect on people. Especially seeing people we know, and just how realistic it is, it makes you think. And just thinking of my friends dying...especially like that....thinking of ANYONE dying, really, is horrible. It definitely opens our eyes.
I don't believe in these "scared straight" things. If they do help that's great but as a therapist I have seen these programs backfire more than help. Lots of kids get entertained by these and think if they do something different they can avoid the consequences. Have these kids have to show to a real situation if you want to do good. I helped a drunk guy after he slammed into a barricade and died on site, worked for me. Being present to see someone take a half hour to actually die worked for me.
Im sorry but I want more of these!! If it even makes 1 of these teens to second guess what they are doing, then it is one more that can grow up and accomplish something in there life rather than spending it under ground!!!
Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, there isn't a full video. These are the stills I shot of the event. There is, however, another school depicted on my web site.
I wish every school would do that. Sure, some kids (idiots) may still end up doing it...but atleast it makes an impact on the kids that truely do care...As a recent High School Graduate...I know that there are kids out there who think that they are too "cool" to show their concerns or whatever in front of thier friends bacause they might look "lame" but this is the REAL WORLD....This stuff DOES happen. Unfortunately some people just learn there lessons the hard way.
I totally agree with you. It is too early, and they should have canceled it for your school. Maybe you should not go to school that day. I am so sorry for your loss.
This past week, my son lost a very good friend because a drunk driver drove the wrong way on an off-ramp and hit her head on. She died 2 days later...only three days before she turned 19 years old. We are devastated. The US needs sticter laws for DUIs...like the death penalty if you kill someone while drinking and driving. Here are the stories of our friend, to which I photographed the events because I want this story in the media. Best of luck to you and your friends.
I'm really afraid to see the reaction. Those who know about it, and knew Alley [everyone but the freshmen] are against it.
I wouldn't be part of it, except that the school invited me to do something for drama and I accepted. And just found out a couple of days ago what it was.
Worst--someone will be flown out of the car and die. Just like Alley.
I'm very disappointed in the administration for doing this.
Yeah, our school can be like that sometimes. I'm part of it, I'm the witness who calls 911. I'm really afraid to see the reaction. Those who know about it, and knew Alley [everyone but the freshmen] are against it.I wouldn't be part of it, except that the school invited me to do something for drama and I accepted. And just found out a couple of days ago what it was.Worst--someone will be flown out of the car and die. Just like Alley.I'm very disappointed in the administration for doing this.
My school did this and it really impacted alot of students. I think is it a great idea to do this. it shows people that things like this can and will happen. Im glad they did this.
The school and local police department does everything possible to make the reenactment appear real...even the "dead" students are taken to a morgue and placed in wall boxes and filmed to show students later.
It is monday October 6th 08. I just lost my best friend. All we hear on TV Is dont drink and drive, drunk driving kills.
It did on saturday October 4th 08!
He was on his way home from doing a show as a DJ and was rolling though an intersection when a drunk driver ran through the stop sign and t-boned his car.
James was killed on Impact the DJ equipment in his car was shattered including the CDs.
wow, this must have cost alot of money and time that could have been used more appropriately to save REAL ppl.....how much is fuel now? for a helicopter????
OMG I will try and forget that you say this is a waste of time an money. I has gone through almost the back 20 years aog at school onlt it was call C.H.A.T and we were in a hospital when they brought in the victims as we were there and we did not know it was a set-up. I find this to be a good eye opener for the young and old jerks that drink and drive. The ending of your user name discribes you to a T I bet.
This is saving real people, if them landing the helicopter, and running this assembly saves them for having to do it in real life......A.) Would that not save real people? B.) They wouldnt have to waste the fuel flying . . . because it never happened thanks to this.
Baltimore Sun / June 6, 2008--Detective Charles Hagee had once been suspended for a domestic violence call in which he was the suspect. He responded to a woman's 911 call, even though he knew he was the subject of the complaint. The woman told Hagee over the phone that she did not want to see him, but he ignored her, driving drunk, in uniform, in a police car to her apartment. State Attorney Patricia C. Jessamy says Det. Hagee cannot be relied upon to tell the truth on the witness stand.
Back when i was a junior, my school did this also. They even went as far as having a helicopter land in the field and take them away...it was pretty real looking.
The Grim Reaper signifies death during the program. Then throughout the students' school day, the Grim Reaper goes into classes every 15 mins and takes them out, signifying that they were killed by a drunk driver. All day students "see" that every 15 mins someone does "statistically" die from drunk drivers... a repetitive process to show "death" is a reality to these students.
this are mock drunk driving accidents but you most kown the ones happen all the time and real familys are tore apart by the aftermath of drunk driving firefighters and ems and police see it avery day so think bfore you drink and drive please
my school just did this and in 4 more years i get to see it again as a senior... most of the teachers and female students left because they couldn't take it and i still have butterflies in my stomach...*brrrrr*
that is a good idea to have a presentation of this.
i know of three girls at my work well defently end up like this if they dont stop drinking. they drink and drink and then they drive. they alway talk how much they get wasted and shit its annoying. i tell them not to do that but they dont listen to me. so im like well theyll pay the consequece.
Depp, tell a teacher at your school to watch the video and see if they can start a program like this for your school with the local police department.
