I know this is a year old but the males have the elongated mandibles of the Dobson fly species and do not bite, the females with the short mandibles on the other hand do have a very painful bite.

This is a Dobson Fly. The elongated mandibles I think is a female. They WILL BITE!!! This one I'm not sure if it can do so very easily but, there are some with smaller scissor type mandibles that hurt like hell!! Their larva's are called Helgromites and they are normally found under rocks in rivers with swift currents. Those little bastards bite too! lol!!!

The first comment was correct. It is a male Dobson fly. The young live in water and the adults emerge in summer. It can be found in most of North and South America.

That is a Dobson fly (not sure if I spelled it right) and you caught the male. They can really give a mean bite too, especially the females because their mandibles are smaller.
