I know this is a year old but the males have the elongated mandibles of the Dobson fly species and do not bite, the females with the short mandibles on the other hand do have a very painful bite.
This is a male Dobson Fly, The long mandibles are used to hold the female in place while mating occurs. Females have small mandibles that will inflict a painful bite.
You know antlions, eh? As you know, the larvaes look like... Well... Like... You know what they look like XD And the actual antlions look like dargonflies - My guess it that this is some freak mutation or some strange sort of antlion, but since they live in deserts as far as I know, I'm not sure xD It looks nice though.
This is a Dobson Fly. The elongated mandibles I think is a female. They WILL BITE!!! This one I'm not sure if it can do so very easily but, there are some with smaller scissor type mandibles that hurt like hell!! Their larva's are called Helgromites and they are normally found under rocks in rivers with swift currents. Those little bastards bite too! lol!!!
@polyneux74 its male.. females bite...hard...lol but males cant get any leverage with the large mandibles they use them to hold the female while mating
It seems to be the result of secret government project that envolves genetic experimentation on insects.Specifically the combination of a flying insect of sorts and a bettle.A project to create the perfect "pest"to annoy their enemies to death.
The first comment was correct. It is a male Dobson fly. The young live in water and the adults emerge in summer. It can be found in most of North and South America.
That is a Dobson fly (not sure if I spelled it right) and you caught the male. They can really give a mean bite too, especially the females because their mandibles are smaller.
