Petty's song is the real thing, but Mayers cover is a unique and original homage to that great contribution to the songwriters art.

It's a good enough version, but Tom Petty's is a tried and true classic that was a top-ten hit, and was one the radio forever. I don't even think Mayer got a single out of this... in fact Petty's version probably gets more airplay NOW than Mayer's.
