The mice are not pre-programmed in anyway. They must find their own way to the centre of the maze then re-trace there steps back to the corner starting position and then go as fast as possible back to the centre of the maze.
What motor did they use? Bow motor?

The motor types vary, though stepper motors are very common. For detection they use either IR or laser emitters and sensors.
