You sure don't see good comedy that much anymore even if I'm 22 years old I'll tell you this even I have notice today's shows don't compare to the nineties but still though this show's got the punch of a Three Stooges Show.
"After his contract at Keystone ran out, he moved to Hal Roach Studios. Roach gave him his own series of two-reelers, hoping he might be the next big thing in comedy, but he never really achieved a lot of success as a solo artist. However, his talent for comedy did shine through when he was cast as a supporting player in two-reelers by bigger-name stars, such as Stan Laurel, whom he co-starred with nineteen times."
You really have to feel sorry for James Finlayson. He was a lot more talented than his film appearances give him credit for. Prior to Laurel and Hardy being discovered, Finlayson was being groomed to be Hal Roach Studios biggest star. After L&H came on the scene, he was relegated to character roles in their films.
classic... ;-D nobody makes me laugh harder and longer than the great Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy...also James Finlayson and Walter Long so funny every time and vital to the Laurel and Hardy cause... thanks for posting ;-)
It's just as well, 'chrissy'. I don't believe your grandmother had any future as a Hal Roach "star", talented as she was. When he stopped making one and two reel shorts and concentrated on feature films after 1938, something happened- I don't know what, but he was never as successful with his "streamliner" features before World War II (running less than an hour) as he was as the "King Of Comedy Shorts". I'm glad she had a "happy ending" in real life!
That's Jimmy Finlayson [Stan & Ollie's perpetual nemesis], minus his famous "walrus moustache" {actually a prop}, as the "director". This movie was actually a "star vehicle" for Rosina Lawrence, who had co-starred with the boys in "Way Out West" (1936) and also appeared as "Our Gang's" schoolteacher in several 1936-'37 shorts...unfortunately, her career at Hal Roach Studios just fizzled out after this one.
That's true in a way about Rosina Lawrence. Though she was on a ship to film in Italy when it was cancelled. She then met her husband on the boat and retired from the screen and moved to Brooklyn, NY. She was my grandmother. :-)

I watched Laurel and Hardy since 1936. This is some pretty funny stuff. It's so sad they died in 1957 and 1958

They've really toned down James Finlayson in this one. None of the peering out of one eye, etc.

There's also Charlie Hall as Fin's assistent. Also Walter Long as the man they fight with.

You might want to mention Patsy Kelly in your info too. She was at least as big a screen name then as Finlayson.
