@DieSonneSinkt LOL you sound so angry and unhappy about this. I agree it's over the top, but hey, it's opera. Isn't it supposed to be high drama? If you don't like it, fine, but you might want to stop pretending you have the corner on artistic truth. Ain't no such thing. BTW I really like the Schubert sonata you posted on your YouTube channel. But I must say it seems to me the Elisabeth Schwarzkopf stuff you put up suffers from the same ridiculous posturing you criticize here. De rigeur?
@wealthychef There is indeed artistic truth, and it is very difficult to achieve. It involves subtlety for one thing, contrary to this here specimen. As for Schwarzkopf, yes, she looks like a Nazi housewife in those lieder videos - but they are lieder, not opera which is primarily meant to be looked at. But Schwarzkopf's performance as the Marschallin was indeed quite good in Czinner's staging of 'Der Rosenkavalier' conducted by Karajan.
@DieSonneSinkt Always easier to tear down than to achieve something yourself, right? You're so smart, show us the video you made of amazing musical talent. Idiot.
@wealthychef Criticism isn't supposed to come from someone who can do better. On the basis of having seen several performances of this opera, I deduce that this performance in question is utterly trite. Start thinking critically, or you'll stay a boot-licker for the rest of your life.
@DieSonneSinkt "Cheesy" is not useful criticism. You are so ignorant you don't even know what it is that the actors are doing that you don't like. Try to be specific if you are trying to be an insightful critic.
@wealthychef FIrst and foremost, they are acting sentimentally, with over-dramatised expressions that are almost comical to any sensible person. Tosca is not a seria-buffa character.
I love the ending it is tragic of course but in a way triumphant as she takes her own life I wrote an article about it if any wants to read it please google "Truvianni,Tosca final scene"
Dude I just got Hitman Blood Money on a whole other level. When you kill the actor (who is like the guy being killed by the firing squad in this clip), he dies and the guy sitting in the box runs over and cries over the dead body (just like the lady who was the lover of the man that was shot).
Uma das cenas mais emocionantes que já vi até agora, muito bom ouvir quando dois anjos se encontram para cantar parabéns aos dois, são dois cantores magníficos.Bravíssimos!!!!
@wangotangowhoo1234 That's probably because you don't understand what is actually happening in this scene. The reason she is smiling is because she thinks the execution of her lover is being faked and that they will be able to run away together.
@paintballKid545 Because Tosca has been tricked by Scarpia, who told her it would be a pretend execution. Having murdered Scarpia she thinks after the fake execution (la muori, ecco un artista! there, die! what an artist!) they'll be able to scape Rome and leave to the shore.
She is one of the best Tosca, ever. I think her voice is perfect for this role. Her timbre is exactly that wide and warm to suit the music of Tosca perfect. She also a very good actress on stage and, of course, amazingly beautiful to look at!
@CuteMcBeauty it is not a matter of mistake or not but a matter of opinion. Of course do not get me wrong on this, I am no fan of the Jonas Brothers but taste is never mistaken just different,
They the soldiers were shooting blanks. She made a deal with the chief of police, Scarpia: she'd sleep with him in exchange for her lover's life and safe passage out of Rome.
Scarpia said he couldn't issue a pardon, so they'd have to have a fake execution - of course, he never meant to uphold his end of the bargain.
He didn't get to enjoy it anyway as Tosca stabbed him to death when he went to embrace her.

Normally I really don't like Gheorghiu at all, not because of the voice or technique, but I find her musical talent really weak, just like Netrebko, but I really liked her Tosca final, it is quite exciting! Well who knows, I may be able to see more from her.
@MartialVidz As I told alredy this scene is exceptional and I have no problem with her technique neither her voice colour bot FOR ME; her performances are dull and boring because it is not enough to sing only the notes.
@MartialVidz I have got ur point but acting is yes maybe one of the things I was mentioning about. I meant 2 say, yes her Tosca seems fine but I didn't like her Juliette, Mimi or Violetta and the reason wasn't only acting, it seems 2 me she has technique and she has a fine voice but that's it. I can't feel her misery in "Addio deI Passato" or her joy of life in "Je veux vivre". I find Diana Damrau more sincere on this point thinking she's also a new generation singer. I hope you got what I mean.
Very nice scene!!! Puccini was a genius!!!!, I think A. Gheorghiu did a magnificent job ,her acting skills are excellent and shes a great soprano and shes very pretty as well!!!!. . I LOVE PUCCINI, I LOVE OPERA!!!! god bless!!
@BoyChoji just to let you know it is WOP not WOOP. See this stands for "With Out Papers" which was the way many Italians were referred to because they did not have legal documents when they first arrived in the states.
@PrinsTan yes so I made a mistake but what is your point? I think you understood what I meant so keep your corrections to yourself yet I see it as being so typical of those who have nothing to say to worry about silly things like that.
@BoyChoji It is ok I just wanted to bring out that little bit of information not that it makes any difference to me one way or another though my father was Italian
Umm... ok, but no very dramatic.... especially her ''o mario!''s and her fall and pretty much everything from "così" onwards... but, good....for very sporadic listening more than watching...
@KBMKBMKBMKBM She thought that she had arranged it with one of the guards to make it a fake execution, but he double-crossed her and it turned out to actually be a real execution.
The olny reason I know and love this song is cause I killed the opera singer in so many different ways to it. In Bloodmoney i mean. Light systems, sniper rifle, heavy machine gun, garrot wire. mmm. good times.
Has anyone else noticed that at the moment after Tosca throws herself off the walls, there's a plume of sand, as if she fell into a sandpit? You'd think such a well-planned scene wouldn't have a goof like that. Or not, I could be wrong and there's a logical explanation I've overlooked. Either way, still an amazing scene. Makes me cry every time I watch it. :)
@Deathwatch05: I did notice it, but I always thought it was some dust on the stone she jumps of. And because of the air flow it looks like it is comming from down below ^_^
Which irony? Maybe I was not able to enjoy the opera totally at the first time I saw it, because I already knew the story. But it is a very dramatic end indeed.
She set up and encouraged her lover to what she thought was a fake execution, when in fact was for real! That is the irony I refer to... I've only seen the last two final acts for this opera.
Oh, yes, of course. Quite tragic. I especially liked how Puccini made it ironic, through the music we hear when Mario was shot. It is the theme but altered into sth too exaggerated and therefore (for the audience) it shows the tragedy.
You should see the whole opera, I like acts 1 and 2 more than the last, because of my favourite character in Opera: Scarpia. He is so mean, clever and I cannot describe it, but he somehow fascinates me. I also love his "arias" although there are not many of them where he sings totally alone. The Te Deum for example is great. Try Ruggero Raimondi as Scarpia, he is my favourite. If you are more advanced then, try Tito Gobbi. They are BOTH my favourites ; )
Never fails to stir the heart.

Could someone please translate this final scene (english)?
hholguin1 2 years ago
just google the english libretto maybe, then you have the whole opera and you understand everything better ^^

Yes I did, and found it. Thank you!
hholguin1 2 years ago
You're welcome! Do you like the opera?
ElisabettaVS 2 years ago
I got taken by the twist on the last scene.. the irony, so unexpected! Very creative! How about you?
hholguin1 2 years ago
Which irony? Maybe I was not able to enjoy the opera totally at the first time I saw it, because I already knew the story. But it is a very dramatic end indeed.
ElisabettaVS 2 years ago
She set up and encouraged her lover to what she thought was a fake execution, when in fact was for real! That is the irony I refer to... I've only seen the last two final acts for this opera.
hholguin1 2 years ago
Oh, yes, of course. Quite tragic. I especially liked how Puccini made it ironic, through the music we hear when Mario was shot. It is the theme but altered into sth too exaggerated and therefore (for the audience) it shows the tragedy.
ElisabettaVS 2 years ago
You should see the whole opera, I like acts 1 and 2 more than the last, because of my favourite character in Opera: Scarpia. He is so mean, clever and I cannot describe it, but he somehow fascinates me. I also love his "arias" although there are not many of them where he sings totally alone. The Te Deum for example is great. Try Ruggero Raimondi as Scarpia, he is my favourite. If you are more advanced then, try Tito Gobbi. They are BOTH my favourites ; )

The way it should be -- NOT like the current Met Opera production, though the last-second tableau at the Met is quite good.

mi tocca piangere tutte le volte che ascolto questo finale "Oh Scarpia, davanti a Dio!"...
...questa musica è davvero immortale, non saprei come definirla altrimenti!
Brava Gheorghiu (e bellissima donna), bella regia e bei costumi!
Non capisco le critiche che le si rivolgono, a me pare perfettamente calata nel personaggio!
