Seeing as he was stockpiling his material which were always bypassed by the other two. I think George knew he wouldn't stay with the Beatles forever because if he did it wouldn't allow him to "blossom" and be a better songwriter. So in a way I think it was a good thing for George to leave so he could do what he wanted and begin writing more.
