Saw them last nite at Bostons in DELRAY BEACH FLA>......... WHAT a FUCKIN SHOW brothers & sisters.... I have seen them all from the Stones to the Beatles to Micheal Powers & the Powder Keg Band to Huey Lewis & back.. THis MOther Fucker & his band RULE !!! Just imagine being a few inches away from these cats in a small bar & listening to this HOF band.....
JR should augment those pentagram tattoos with an "infinity" sign ∞, 'cos that's where this guy's limits are! Every note's just fantastic, as usual ... even when the dodgy mic wants to prove otherwise! Much respect from the UK.
awsome sounds on that harp. i call that improv with no limits. the band is perfect for harp jammin. its good to see everyone in the band get their props along with the killer harp. cant wait to see youall in auburn hills hope to hear that kinda improv. thats what its all about right there
Notice that he's got the mic complete cupped, you need to saturate / overdrive the mic as well as the amp to get the big fat sound. You do not need a mic / amp for this effect, but with them it creates this unbelievably definitive harp tone. JK
The net effect is you hear two notes, the first single note, and then the chord "average" note, which is lower.
2) Tongue block to get the single draw high note on 5. Then you move down to the lower note on 4, and at the same time unblock the cord, and then quickly reblock it to the single note on 4, and then quicly shift back up to the 5.
Use either basic technique on the blow so you don't run out of air.
Andrew, the effect starting at about 6:08 is all player, harp, mic and amp, no outboard effects.
On my rig, you need the amp near saturation, turned up fairly high. Jason's rig night be a little different.
Here are two slightly different descriptions of what he's (probably) doing.
1) Tongue block to get the single draw high note on 5. Then unblock to the chord, and quickly block again back to the note. Do this to the rhythmic pattern you want.
Jason it would be unreal if you could play at the Byron Bay blues festival, Ben Harper has come down for years even Charlie Musselwhite showed up,We need you Jason, fair dinkum please put the blues back in Byron, goodonya mate we love yer work.
I'm sure the band would love to come to Oz...but have you any idea how expensive it is for a band to fly there? so maybe you could take up a collection to bring them...haha..just a wee suggestion. I do think you Aussies need to be Ricci'ized as well ;) For sure you wouldn't regret it..
or...you lot could fly here for our SPAH and JR's annual blow-off right before. :)
I Love this freaking video. Thanks for the inspiration Jason. I encourage everyone to check out the tips and lessons this man has graciously posted and PLEASE pick up one of the band's CDs at Amazon "Jason Ricci and the New Blood" to show your appreciation.
It's a bad connection OR the battery pack is starting to go dead. The notes that made it through during the disruption are still mind blowing to me. Jason makes it look effortless (i know much too well that its not) and notice how he never misses a lick even while fixing the mic with the other hand, now that's a pro up there johnny!
man, your bassist rips shit up, he's amazing... not saying that all of you aren't, but i'm a bassist picking up the harp and oh my god does WEED XD ever tear that neck a new one
you`re right about fan base growing! We saw Jason the other night in a club called Aces. down in bradenton, fl. and I really don`t have the words to explain the experience you get from a live show. I`m a harp player and there were a few other harp players there as well, and quite honestly my jaw was on the floor, totaly captivated. The internet and recordings are great but, as Jason once said, You can`t beat organic. He IS the real deal.
Now you're singing MY song: there's nothing like seeing and experiencing Jason and the guys in person at a Live Show. As good as the CD's and downloads, YouTubes are, they pale by comparison to a 'right there' in front of the band visual/aural happening. I won't miss a show in NY now...and have been to several in other venues. Each one better than the last. Jason, Shawn, Todd and now Byron are the real deal...not to be missed if you like them at all.
