Simply brilliant. I had no idea that Ray played Glastonbury. The coverage that I typically see in the US always focuses on the "flavor of the month" artists that perform there. Great to see the folks singing along and showing their appreciation.
You know how Trent Reznor's "Hurt" became Johnny Cash's when he did that video? This is like that. "Days" is now Pete Quaife's. BUT... it also belongs to those of us who see something personal for ourselves in it. Wonderful song, that. And I only just discovered it.
Ray Davies is an absolute legend, long may he continue to perform and entertain us with his nostalgic, reflective and beaitiful songs - they'll never be another like him.
im going to say it and some people arent going to agree, and dont get me a wrong because i am a huge fan of the beatles and lennon, mccarthy etc but i think the kinks ray and pete are more influential band, ray davies never got to the real super stardom of lennon or mccarthy maybe that was his way and i think it may well have been the way he wanted it....look at his songs what he wrote but more importanly sit down sit down and listen to the likes of got me,sunny afternoon, lola, waterloo,
@onjo12345 Go sit down and listen to A Day In The Life,Hey Jude,Help,The Ballad of John on Yoko,Lucy In The SKy with Diamonds...... The kinks were good, great even, but not a patch on the Beatles
I still say the whole Kinks vs. Beatles discussion is a "Great Apples" vs. "Great Oranges" argument. We can just fell lucky to listen to both whenever we want to.
im 28 years old and from dublin...i never really got into the 90s or noughties music, always listen to the likes of fleetwood, the mamas and papas, beatles, the stones, elvis costello etc....THE KINKS AND RAY DAVIES AND THIS SONG WILL GO DOWN AS A CLASSIC and will be listened to long after were in the ground...this song is the beginning of modern music its GENESIS.....ray come to dublin and share your genius....
@onjo12345 i'm in the exact same boat as you, 27 from dublin and i love all the old music, we were born in the wrong era, don't forget the zombies and the spencer davis group
@tonym999music Love that Ray says "and dedicated to the great band The Kinks" ; almost brought a tear to my eye as I am nostalgic and Ray is so quite rightly proud of his band but importantly ALL of the band including his brother. One special and unique band from my childhood and teens
Ray Davies is one of the greatest singer/songwriters in the world and in the 60's ,was well before his time.If you ever get the chance to see his one man show "The Storyteller " then go as it is a lifetime experience. Thanks for everything you've done Ray and I hope you live forever
beautiful beautiful, beautiful recreation and a beautiful man!!! i love watching every face of every person on that stage and every move, it is perrrrrrfect!
iv always wanted to see waterloo sunset (my favourite song) sung live and this is where my wish came true. brought back so many memories from years gone by. and im gona blame the intense heat and strongbow cause i did shed a few tears
i was stood next to the "wheres al" flag, it was amazing. slash was on before this and it was a perfect sunday afternoon. i think about glastonbury festival everyday and all the memories i have from it
I think Ray and the Kinks have a special place in pop history in Britain because they were the first to write about issues closer to home and sing about living in the quiet suburbs or small towns. Previously, most UK rock bands sang about the same stuff American R&B and rock artists did. The Stones sort of did their thing with describing upper class snobs in some tunes, but Ray took it further, even singing without American inflection in his voice years before punk rockers did the same.
Oh dear! Cant fault an old artist for making a livin' but most of Ray's reviews are really pants like Ray's music. This talk of genius is of course nonsense written by Ray's fan club (relatives??). Genius is Ray Charles, Kristofferson's songs, everything about Willie, Roy Orbison, Sinatra, Elvis, Cash, Springsteen with the ESBand, maybe just maybe ALWebber but only with Tim Rice, BB King, Miles Davis, oh and again the Million Dollar Quartet - they were genius along with Sam Philips - geddit?
@nikon3dx Excuse me for having an opinion, I am not a relative of Ray but I do believe he is a genius. Unlike some of those that you mention. Oh and by the way please learn to spell proper.
@nikon3dx Sorry mate, but just don't see how the standard you're setting excludes Mr. Davies. Surely, in terms of songwriting talent, he was a little higher up on the list than Elvis?
Asside from the great music, what a nice, humble fellow Ray is. Met him at Glastonbury and he loves his own music 40+ yrs later. .....I love your music too Ray....Thankyou..
@pretorious700 Not many, but that doesn't matter. Ray keeping on performing this [and this version is fantastic] means the song lives on, more people are made aware of it, and it just gets better and better for more and more.
springsteen had some balls calling himself the boss at glasto last year, especially in rays presence-the real boss, sprigsteen would be lucky to make a sales supervisor with ray playing on the same stage.
@mcjeff1234 Don't be too hard on Bruce he thought he was in Glass-boro NJ. Bruce has done some good songs and even at times is a league with Ray other times a bowling league in the slobs of Jersey. On a far too serious note for a post, it seems in general Bruce has a good sense of humor and he was joking I would guess. I have heard his interviews where he jokes and he laughs very hard at his own jokes, but in a good way usually, and he must have been joking ..hey baby the laughs on me.
mr. davies makes me cry ,, i'm a huge fan of the kinks and ray,, after pete quife's dead ,,maybe we shoul think the kinks never come backl...i'm from mexico and we never had the fortune to see him ,,,,but i hope one day i could,,thank mr. davies.
Simply gorgeous and Pete was the perfect bassist for The KinKs. I love the chorus on these songs and especially Shangri-La. RIP, Pete. You're sorely missed.
RIP Pete Quaife, true Kinks fans will always remember you and thank you as you co-founded one of the greatest and most influential British groups in our history, and your bass playing was so underrated. Ray, you really are something else - truly one of our greatest songwriters ever.
@cheeky315 you mean to tell me he's there (glastonbury) every single year. im soon moving to hawaii and along the way from vermont (lol) im going to london for a month or two, im not leaving till i see him live and hopefully meet him though im sure that will be my demise as i think the excitement will cause my heart to just stop beating!!
I was there... not a dry eye in the crowd. It most certainly gave me goosebumps in 30degree heat. RIP Pete. And thank you Ray - you made my Glastonbury. x
Lovely songs and lovely comments from all of you. The only songwriters who could touch Ray's elegant beauty whilst still rocking out were Brian Wilson and Pete Townshend, both of them less consistently. I've always felt a bond with Kinks fans and I'm pleased to see how powerfully he can still move us all - and himself - with his wistful yet celebratory music. God bless Ray Davies and God save the Kinks (actually, I believe in the Kinks more than I believe in God, but you know what I mean),
great track, the kinks gave the beatles and the stones a run for their money, ray davies is a legend still out there telling stories and performing what a showmen.
What a track ; definitely one of the few really important and significant singles in pop music ; timeless and ageless and kids will be singing it in another fifty years time
