  • watch Sori1004jy channel and see her channel because i am really pleased with it

  • @DanceMyStyle Good to know :) I still maintain that his tempo is a bit bright (having played the Suite with orchestra and listened to five or six commercial recordings. None of which are near this speed...and not because the orchestras can't play it this fast, but because this tempo does not enhance the character of the music -- unless he intended it to feel more like a joke than a beautiful waltz). Anyway, his speed wouldn't bother me as much if he actually phrased with more care/interest.

  • is other 24 people are just idiots? HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE THIS?!?!!

  • I really like O'Neill, especially when he plays Mozart!

  • I am playing this for my orchestra. i have the cello solo

  • It doesn't matter what tempo it is, as long as it fits the artist, occasion, and mood.

Richard O'Neill is just interpreting his piece as a light yet melancholic waltz, which isn't wrong.

I think this is actually one of the better interpretations I've heard of this song.

The notes are played to go with the tempo, which is what makes it actually good.

  • YouTube forever means never worrying about what the audience thinks - the PERFECT media for artistic expression!

  • does anyone know how to get this music sheet? for viola i mean. please help me, i need it for my recital.

  • sat in the front row of a private concert...must say, having richard o'neill play three feet away from me...one of the most amazing experiences of my life!

  • hahahaha those accompanists are hilarious....

  • excellent arrangement! Does anyone know where I might get a hold of it?

Might just have a bash at transcribing it myself.

  • my professor! =]

  • @ohdannyb0i

you are so lucky. so jealous!

  • @ohdannyb0i do you also go to ucla? my friend had him for private lessons when he was music major in la. =)...he seemed like a nice guy; my friend was keep telling him about how he gave him free strinsg or wutnot

  • When you play it at this tempo, you distract from Shostakovich's intentions, which is to have a melancholic waltz... this is upbeat, "3/8" tempo and contrasts very much to the original. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not a true lover of the song.... I mean this is cool, but so different

  • Cherokee, I completely agree. I've heard better.

  • Such rich texture with the six instruments! Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

  • He is brilliant.. a genius violist.

  • Comment removed

  • Good, but I like it slower.

  • Eccellente Interpretazione, davvero godibile. Complimenti

  • bravi sti nipponici

  • Brawo! Wspaniale!!!

  • BRAVI

  • Isn't this from "Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra", not "Jazz Suite No 2"?

  • That's correct. It is actually from Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra No. 1, Movement # 7, Waltz No. 2. But if you refer to this piece as Shostakovich's "Second Waltz", Waltz No. 2, or "The Russian Waltz", most folks know what you're talking about.

  • yongjae, you have nice viola... im looking for new violin... may i know where he bought it?maybe they have good violin too...

  • I like it!

  • Yeah!me tooooooo :-)

  • after viola solo come...

    bass solo :o

  • violist.. very good!

  • so cool !

  • musician has right to chose their own tempo, am i right?

every musician is different each other, we call it character.

  • @PeeFitty Easily, vienese waltz.

What with me being a ballroom dancer and all ;D x

  • Although this performance is in a slightly faster tempo than what I'm used to hear, I still like his interpretation and think this is a nice performance.

  • I agree

  • sorry but 24th second didn't work that's why should take it easy on the tempo, of course a great performer...

  • BRAVO

  • too fast

  • hes korean, by the way. and stop hating on him.

  • This little fuck should keep eating sushi instead .. Ruined the whole masterpiece , fucking idiot ! And that imbecile , who says " music is open to interpretation" , should accompany him . You can´t play it that fast , that´s why each single note has it´s length , asswife !

  • Ok, that wasn't nice at all. I think myself it's a bit too fast this, but absolutely beautiful. And you should know that many big preformers have thier own touch at masterpiece! that's music!

  • u're just saying tat cause you'll never be as good as him even if u try ur best!! And i'd like to see u do it!!!

  • Never the less it's far to slow.

  • i like when the double bass has the melody in 1:56

  • Magnificent! I could cry tears of joy...he plays sooooooo beautifully!!

  • It still is a good adaptation. One of my favorite pieces ever.

  • Same. =/

  • because its played faster than normal, the emotion is in the overall character of the piece..not in the individual notes.

music is open to interpretation..lets just leave it at that. i thought it was a great performance

  • Much to fast. The whole emotional core is lost by the crazy pace at wich this is played.

  • Yeah I totally agree.

This is probably what the band on the Titanic were playing like as the water lapped at their bows.

SLOW DOWN, for the love of God. And Shostakovich, of course.

  • not normally a pedant but the cellist plays a d instead of a c in bar 5 (the c changes to the d in bar 6) and this isn't from jazz suite number 2 but suite for variety stage orchestra no 1. this was originally thought to be the (then lost) jazz suite but in '99 rostropovich made a discovery of the piano score of the real one.

  • I love it!

So Richard Yongjae O'Neill is half Irish?

  • Adopted. He's been looking for his biological parents for years, and he's still looking. I wish him the best of luck.

  • Jaja, parece que el contrabajo se equivoca al principio...

    Pero una interpretación impresionante.

  • As much as I hate to admit that this is a tad faster than what I like, but it is after all his interpretation and I think he did absolutely brilliant!!

  • Good, but to fast!& two tempo errors

  • interesting!

  • Different, but highly enjoyable rendition of the 2nd Waltz.

  • I thought this was a tremendous performance and a wonderful interpretation. Asia is where classical music is most appreciated. It appears that classical music is growing in Asia while declining the the U.S. and in parts of Europe. classical music as a share of sales - "US data, shows a slide from 3% in 2002 to 2% in 2006. The figure has stayed at 2% for the past three years. South Korea rose from 9% to 10%. Austria and Hong Kong share the highest percentage: 11%. China overall is at 9%.

  • I do not know at what data you look (CD sales?) but classical music today is far more vivid in Europe than two to three decades ago. In the 1950s the Amsterdam Concertgebouw had to stage Jazz performance and crooners to foot the bill. Today it schedules 800+ concerts pro year and it is difficult to get cards.

  • do you hear lyrics? hell - do you even hear voices? where there voices or lyrics in the original composition. No. So how the fuck would you conceive this to be a SONG? You come on here and slag other people off when obviously your musical knowledge is somewhat limited!

  • Thank you for taking a stand against bigotry

  • not quite sure wat u mean there

  • beatiful!!!!!!!!!

  • alright, somebody young at the top to aim for

  • this was one of my favorite pieces, and they played it almost perfectly

  • technically flawless.

    emotionally void.

  • Beautifully played! It was fast like someone said but i thought it made it that much better! ...I so wish I played the violin...

  • Absolutely amazing stuff.

  • This is not a jazz waltz but a string waltz from Vianna.

Some people have funny ideas what jazz is.

  • Wow! Adore!! This opens up film "Eyes Wide Shut", which is so far my 2nd-favorite Kubrick film, after "A Clockwork Orange".

  • First of all, this is NOT film music. Second, tempo is purely opinion. Third, Asians are people just like you and me, and learn to play music just like you and me.

  • Let me just say that if you knew ANYTHING about anything, you would know that: this was written at about 1939 if I recall correctly (Way before eyes wide shut) and it does indeed figure into modern classical repertoire. Kubrick used classical music because he didn't want to take risks with any new composers seeing as he already had the best at the studios' musical archives. And if hope your comment about asian people was a joke, because if not it only shows what an ignorant person you are.

  • I SMELL WIKIPEDIA

  • wtf? lol !

  • So stop saying bologni about imitating music or not, you have probably never written any music yourself, and beside, your ignorance about Asian music is just so pathetic. They just don't play their own music for great shows like these because it's easier to please guys who just have big wallets. And this is apparently all you know about them. That's what I said : Ignorant.

  • An unusual interpretation, but very nice indeed.

  • Is it possible to obtain the score of this arrangement?

  • very nice:)do you have a email adres?i like to spike with you

  • EYES WIDE SHUT

  • there are many asian musician....lol-_ -

such as Yo-Yo Ma, Sara Jang, Hana Cheng, etc

  • That's viola. And don't get racist, there are a great number of fine Asian musicians.

  • i love it...

  • it's good to see people making beautiful thing... music is one the best thing u can do... great work.

  • i wonder what made this kid so hateful? i don't this kid had accomplished anything in life, but only know how to hurt other people. it's really sad. the screen name tells u what kind of hateful person he is. if one wants to do something positive in life, one should work hard instead of wasting time to hurt people.

  • p.s. the i don't mean the artist...

  • I've seen quite a few classical videos on YouTube of young musicians performing for young audiences in a "cool" atmosphere, like this one!!! Which country is this? Korea??? Man, kudos for their youth!!!!

  • fabulous work of art!quite amazing performance too!

  • some like it tender, some like it hot, some like it slow, some do not. yet as with sex, it depends on the style of attack, the power of the bough and the soft murmering of an artists who make us glow. in other words, this is one sexxxxy performance!

  • Golly, did they have to get through it in a given time?? Nice sound though.

  • what a great song! but it's true it's a bit too fast.

  • very nice, but a little too fast for my taste

  • B-E-A-Utiful! very nice..
