@DanceMyStyle Good to know :) I still maintain that his tempo is a bit bright (having played the Suite with orchestra and listened to five or six commercial recordings. None of which are near this speed...and not because the orchestras can't play it this fast, but because this tempo does not enhance the character of the music -- unless he intended it to feel more like a joke than a beautiful waltz). Anyway, his speed wouldn't bother me as much if he actually phrased with more care/interest.
sat in the front row of a private concert...must say, having richard o'neill play three feet away from me...one of the most amazing experiences of my life!
@ohdannyb0i do you also go to ucla? my friend had him for private lessons when he was music major in la. =)...he seemed like a nice guy; my friend was keep telling him about how he gave him free strinsg or wutnot
When you play it at this tempo, you distract from Shostakovich's intentions, which is to have a melancholic waltz... this is upbeat, "3/8" tempo and contrasts very much to the original. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not a true lover of the song.... I mean this is cool, but so different
yeh sure he knows the tune but if he's that good he should know how the majority like it played (not so quick thank you).Maybe he's got a bus to catch after the performance.
That's correct. It is actually from Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra No. 1, Movement # 7, Waltz No. 2. But if you refer to this piece as Shostakovich's "Second Waltz", Waltz No. 2, or "The Russian Waltz", most folks know what you're talking about.
it is true that any one may be allowed to chose their own tempo, but that will be disrespectful to the composer, because the piece might have been composed with a slow tempo or adante, such as this piece
Although this performance is in a slightly faster tempo than what I'm used to hear, I still like his interpretation and think this is a nice performance.
This little fuck should keep eating sushi instead .. Ruined the whole masterpiece , fucking idiot ! And that imbecile , who says " music is open to interpretation" , should accompany him . You can´t play it that fast , that´s why each single note has it´s length , asswife !
Ok, that wasn't nice at all. I think myself it's a bit too fast this, but absolutely beautiful. And you should know that many big preformers have thier own touch at masterpiece! that's music!
not normally a pedant but the cellist plays a d instead of a c in bar 5 (the c changes to the d in bar 6) and this isn't from jazz suite number 2 but suite for variety stage orchestra no 1. this was originally thought to be the (then lost) jazz suite but in '99 rostropovich made a discovery of the piano score of the real one.
As much as I hate to admit that this is a tad faster than what I like, but it is after all his interpretation and I think he did absolutely brilliant!!
I thought this was a tremendous performance and a wonderful interpretation. Asia is where classical music is most appreciated. It appears that classical music is growing in Asia while declining the the U.S. and in parts of Europe. classical music as a share of sales - "US data, shows a slide from 3% in 2002 to 2% in 2006. The figure has stayed at 2% for the past three years. South Korea rose from 9% to 10%. Austria and Hong Kong share the highest percentage: 11%. China overall is at 9%.
I do not know at what data you look (CD sales?) but classical music today is far more vivid in Europe than two to three decades ago. In the 1950s the Amsterdam Concertgebouw had to stage Jazz performance and crooners to foot the bill. Today it schedules 800+ concerts pro year and it is difficult to get cards.

It doesn't matter what tempo it is, as long as it fits the artist, occasion, and mood.
Richard O'Neill is just interpreting his piece as a light yet melancholic waltz, which isn't wrong.
I think this is actually one of the better interpretations I've heard of this song.
The notes are played to go with the tempo, which is what makes it actually good.
