  • S. Maharba - When I Go To Sleep

  • i go to sleep - sia :)

  • this cover is just great (Marion Maerz - I go to sleep)

  • that is the longest 3 minute song i have ever heard! strange and haunting, love it!

  • sia's cover of this is so beautiful

  • I love how mostly all their songs are less than 3 minuets.

  • With her affinity for his brilliant songs, and her badass personality, it's hard to understand how Chrissie had his kid , and dumped Ray for that twat from Simple Minds.

  • @aprilglaspieable Agreed, but from what I read back in the 80s, Ray Davies wanted to seriously nest and had wanted to have Chryssie be a traditional home-bound English housewife like his mom, and she couldn't deal with that. She loved having the kid, but wasn't so hot on becoming like Ray's mother. She had to go on being Chryssie Hynde, doing things her way. But how she got together with the totally ordinary Simple Minds guy is kind of a wonder. Maybe she just wanted another kid.

  • I'm hearing a hint of Dionne Warwick here, " Anyone Who Had A Heart" .....

interesting how similar themes were making the rounds at any given time.

    So much beautiful music....

  • Pure beauty ....

  • listen to the cover from anika... and you will cry... so perfect!

  • the kinks don't make sense to me. they should be 1000 times more famous then they are. i feel like jimmy page strives for the diversity of the heaviness/softness of the kinks. after that's what led zeppelin was.

  • What a great song...I just heard a remake by Anika, and I am glad that she maintained the semi-creepy nature of the song!

    ~V.C.B

  • Ray Davies top songwriter of the last century-still going though.

Would've loved to have heard this live by Kinks

  • 2 people were "going to sleep" when they went to hit the like button... and missed.

  • i dont get why people that like the other version of the song, come on this video and say they like another persons version better, probably for the attention, but anyways if you like the other version go listen to that no need to tell anybody.

  • chrissis hyndes better than sia furlers by far...check it out ...sia furlers vioce bit dead in comparison

  • I love this song so much that it makes me want to cry. I wish the Kinks' version got more notice, but alas, this is just a demo

  • Comment removed

  • I love the kinks and i don't even know this song was first a kink's song !! Great.

Pretenders cover is really a wonderfull one.

i go to sleep is the kind of song that everybody has sang !

  • OMG!!! Is this the ompa lompa version ? :S

  • @tgschmidt47 lol im not christian, that is the most random thing to say but. And also you're showing your "intolerance and stupidity" in saying that all christians say that... You're not a good troll, your just confusing haha. Where the hell did christians come from anyway lol did one touch u as a kiddy thats why u dont like them

  • @tgschmidt47 haha wtf?? none of what you just said made sense.. I'm a reformed christian? I've got no clue where that came from haha. You're an odd one tgschmidt47. Also your a loser. Sorry but you fail at internet

  • This song sums up the biggest mistake I ever made in my whole life. Amazing how being too shy on one occasion can ruin the rest of your life. The only advice I can give others is to say that if someone comes into your life whom you feel is special... don't be afraid to risk embarrassment and rejection, because if you don't ask you will always regret it... especially 20 years on when that person's marriage has failed and you find that she felt the same way about you, and now you are married... :(

  • @maclee62 that is so sad. But one consolation maybe is that you don't know how it may have turned out. But however the way you tell it it is sad.

  • why is everyone saying that sia is better? Sia is better at nothing... apart from being a fat ugly dyke whore

  • This song has helped get me into alot more of the Kinks stuff

  • Sia has brought the full emotion of the song through her version (very similar to the Pretenders version actually) ... so kudos to however is behind the arrangement :)

  • Sorry everybody but The Pretenders do the very best version of this. You don't realize that probably because maybe you haven't heard it yet.

  • @aznwonab That is possibly the best cover |I have ever heard. Sia is wonderful

  • @aznwonab That is possibly the best cover |I have ever heard.

  • i love this tune.

  • Like this version but Sia's is so haunting theres more emotion to connect with and relate to! Still she didnt write it these guys did so all credit to them for writing an amazing song tht everyone loves no matter whos singing it!

  • so beautiful. the kinks were just so amazing.

  • All props and glory to Ray Davies..one of the best lyricists of all time...a wordsmith!

  • i hate when the 2 highest rated comments say the same thing. i feel like everyone thinks the same.

  • I love that German chick Marion's cover of this song best.. super awesome. The song is amazing. the kinks were amazing. :D

  • Very nice ... didn't know that the Kinks had done the original of this or of Stop Your Sobbing, both of which I like as sung by The Pretenders. Thanks for posting.

  • this incredibly was held back as a publishers demo in1965.It wasnt recorded until the 80s by Daves missus Chrissy

  • @see4miles67 sure it was - by among others Peggy Lee for whom it was written and released in, 1965

  • wow - I thought this was an original Pretenders song too. Chrissie kills it imo.

  • Never knew the original was from The Kinks... sorry! The Pretenders did a good job in my opinion.

  • Cher covered this

  • As an eighties child,I knew The Pretenders version first, but how haunting and retained is this?Just beautiful!

Chrissy Hynde made a wonderful cover of her partners song though!

Cant choose and dont want or have to!

  • WHO the hell is Sia -and really who care!? The Kinks-thats a band-newbs:)

  • @z3driv3r I completely agree. This song is like a raw Procol Harum song. It hovers around in your soul and doesn't leave until... well, until you go to sleep. :-]

  • Sia is not a good cover, it is over sung and the voice takes over the song. It's like a death metal band covering I'm only sleeping by the Beatles by screaming the words, losing the tenderness.

  • @AresRoar or a 90s pop-punk version, stripping it of any kind of emotion it's ever had

  • @AresRoar That is what SIA stands for.. She needs no music. Her voice covers everything that makes a song good. It's just stupid to call it not a good cover just because she interprets this song in her way. Thats why its called cover :)

  • @Senj1n No it isn't, just because it is a cover does not mean it cannot be critiqued. It's not a very good cover nor is it very good as a stand alone had it been the original.

  • Excellent tune, thank's Ktoop.

  • la version de Sia n'est pas du tout pareil , a choisir les gout et les couleurs apres !

  • this version is nice, but Sia babyyy, SIA SIA SIA ♥♥♥

  • Sia's cover is way much better, but isn't it sad when you conclude that it seems like nothing really new has been in decades?

  • @hocsx ufck off sia made a dogs dinner of this..ray sings it best of all.

  • R.I.P PETER QUAIFF LOVED THE KINKS AND THIER MUSIC

  • happy birthday ray davies

  • how does one write such wonderful songs?? it's such a gift!

  • This is the version and the ones who say SIA's version is better are seriously missing out. Ray Davies on the piano and singing his heart out. the Kinks in the 60's were every bit the rivals of The beatles as the stones. Its Wim wenders favourite Kink Song he uses it in the Amercian friend

  • @cheevers4ever I didn't know that about the director. I do like the creepy piano. This is a song that I have not heard like any other from them.

But how true can those lyrics be...!

  • This is a great version. Is it the original? Of course, Sia rocks with her version but how many people can sing as great as her?

  • @FeFe3O4 Yes Ray Davies wrote this song and The Kinks did it first, like so many other things they did first....

  • @aznwonab gross

  • The Kinks never recorded this song officially. This is a demo, just Ray Davies and piano -he wrote it for jazz singer Peggy Lee.

  • I love the Kinks but prefer the Pretenders version of this song. And what's the deal with Sia? does she have a lisp or something? I didn't care for her version.

  • I like this original version AND I like BOTH covers by Sia and The Pretenders.

They all sing it differently, but they're all nice int their own ways.

    :D

  • Christ, people write some shite.

  • This is good, but personally I like sad songs done with slower tempo and definitely with woman voice singing them.

This song has it's moments but general "emotion" coming with it is in opposition to sense words bring.

  • I don't get how people can say that other versions are better than this one. It's the original version in it's purest form and no cover can even be fathomed as being better or more emotional than the version done by the song writer, who could have very well written this song as result of a life experience.

  • @FightOffYourDemons07: People can say that other versions are better than this one because everyone has different tastes. Have you even heard Sia's cover? It's like she ripped out her heart with her bare hands, put it in an blender and took the chopped up pieces and threw them at the listener! I definitely think her version much more emotional and raw, but then again, that is my opinion and you have yours.

  • the pretenders did the BEST cover...hands down!

    fuck Sia!

  • @garciai22 agree on the sia comment fucking wanna be bitch

  • There's no comparison The Kinks version is better but that's a matter of taste.....

  • How they didn't release this as a song and leave it as a demo

  • agreed

  • ta for posting, I always wondered if Ray had done a version of this great song.

He's written some of the best songs ever!

  • who the fuck wrote this song??? whoever it was , was a fucking genius

  • @TheBrianchimombo

    Ray Davies

  • Ray Davies. And he is a genius. He wrote this waiting for news from the hospital of the birth of his child. Peggy Lee was the first to release it in 1965. Oddly, the kinks only ever recorded it as a demo. which is now included as an bonus track to the CD release to the 1965 Album "Kinda Kinks". It was not on the album at the time.

The Pretenders of course released it to huge success. Ray Davies and Chrissy Hynde had children together. Little known factoid. Hence, the connection.

  • Ray actually sent this demo to Peggy Lee ("Fever"), before it went to anyone else, because Ray was a fan of Peggy's. She liked the song and included it in her next LP. By the time that her LP came out, though, one or two other versions had been released.

  • this is true genius and sias version is good chriisie hinds is amazing but dont forget chers 1960s version that will also surprise you

  • eh...I think The Kinks' version is very robotic and boring. The Pretenders' version sounds a lot more emotional and has more elements to it. Sia's version is a bit overboard; it's a little too emotional and it's slower than the other two versions which I actually thought wasn't the best idea.

  • Kinks version is not boring.....

  • whats funny about some of the comments here is that they seem to think that this classic ray davies song is some how not a full song until it has had some full production on it! Im a songwriter myself and ray davies might not have recorded this track but its still a song that has merrit and though it was recorded only as a demo it is a full song in its own right. all others are mearly imitations whether they are good or bad!

  • The Sia version is cheesy and melodramatic.

  • This is a truly great song, and like all great art it cannot be anything but great art. Covers by Kia and the Pretenders are both excellent. They do not detract from this original, which was only a demo with barely any production. Rather, they bring additional depth because of interpretation, production and, yes, emotion. Proof of the song's quality surely comes from so many fine singers being moved to cover it - and from its potential being discernible from such a basic demo.

  • the pretenders version is awesome too

  • Sia's version is much more emotional

  • any of the people you mention who said something about sia's version being better were giving their opinion.

they're not trying to convince you, they're just speaking their minds. unlike you, who is trying to provoke us, in a rather radical way.

but, if the internet is the only place where you can say the things you like and live the life you want. then i said nothing. i don't want to hurt you little feelings

  • One of the Kinks best!

  • Sorry but i think Sia Furlers version is better...... just my opinion, please don't hate me. :S

  • @Red893 well wait man, sia furler cover is basically the same than the pretenders' cover..i'd say, exactly th same...but she did it just something like 30 years later..

  • @Red893 I personally like Cher´s version best.

  • @Red893 nope, this is better but i don't hate you :)

  • @Red893 This was actually only a demo - a guideline - not a released track. The Kinks and Ray Davies never did an official release of this song, even though Ray wrote it.

  • @PlaceSoFarAway. Didn't know that. WHat year was this demo? Ray is a genius, somewhat under valued.

  • @Red893 Well, I preferred Jem's version of Macca's "Amazing", but The Kinks revolutionised music, including punk.

  • i agree...SIA'S is the best...i like the kinks but THIS IS BAD...oh well

  • Well, that was just a demo dating back from 1965.

I suppose with the same melody he could have done something more direct.

  • no way...this is so much better

  • This song...the sorrow and loneliness it conveys is hard to be comprehended by humans--it's like Drowning In The Sea of Love without a shore in sight...Sarah...I'll see you tomorrow--have a good night.

  • This was covered by Peggy Lee before anyone else released it.

  • i wasnt aware they sang this, but they're an amazing group

  • Ray davies of the Kinks wrote this. Does anyone know why there was never a finished official release? I'm guessing that exclusive rights were sold to Peggy Lee or Cher in the 60's?

  • Comment removed

  • This isn't a cover, Ray Davies wrote. The other versions are the covers.

  • No, this is the original. Ray Davies wrote it.

  • BRILLIANT!LONG LIVE THE KINKS

  • What a top tune mate! X

  • This is a Kinks song written by Ray Davies, and it was covered by The Pretenders. They also covered Stop your sobbing, also by The Kinks

  • This reminds me of..willy wonka

    haha

  • no way jose...this the original and only version.

  • It's the original - a demo. Davies cut it in about 1965. It was recorded by some woman singer at the time - can't recall who.

NOT Sandie Shaw, although I've always thought she would do a very good version of it.

  • BABY.. IT WAS PEGGY LEE!!!!

  • Cher.

  • Before the Prewtenders version there were dozens of others, mate

  • couldn't say it better than the last two comments

  • yeah, it's good, cold... and so warm at the same time. hard to be indifferent...

  • This song flat out kills me. It is just too lovely and creepy and sad and haunting and PERFECT.
