With her affinity for his brilliant songs, and her badass personality, it's hard to understand how Chrissie had his kid , and dumped Ray for that twat from Simple Minds.
@aprilglaspieable Agreed, but from what I read back in the 80s, Ray Davies wanted to seriously nest and had wanted to have Chryssie be a traditional home-bound English housewife like his mom, and she couldn't deal with that. She loved having the kid, but wasn't so hot on becoming like Ray's mother. She had to go on being Chryssie Hynde, doing things her way. But how she got together with the totally ordinary Simple Minds guy is kind of a wonder. Maybe she just wanted another kid.
for the record, this is not a kinks recording, Ray did this solo as a demo, I don't believe the band ever recorded it, as the Kinks publisher was more anxious to shop it to Peggy Lee. According to Ray's autobiography, he wrote this while he was waiting to hear word of his wife's first child delivery while waiting at his parents house.
the kinks don't make sense to me. they should be 1000 times more famous then they are. i feel like jimmy page strives for the diversity of the heaviness/softness of the kinks. after that's what led zeppelin was.
i dont get why people that like the other version of the song, come on this video and say they like another persons version better, probably for the attention, but anyways if you like the other version go listen to that no need to tell anybody.
@tgschmidt47 lol im not christian, that is the most random thing to say but. And also you're showing your "intolerance and stupidity" in saying that all christians say that... You're not a good troll, your just confusing haha. Where the hell did christians come from anyway lol did one touch u as a kiddy thats why u dont like them

This song sums up the biggest mistake I ever made in my whole life. Amazing how being too shy on one occasion can ruin the rest of your life. The only advice I can give others is to say that if someone comes into your life whom you feel is special... don't be afraid to risk embarrassment and rejection, because if you don't ask you will always regret it... especially 20 years on when that person's marriage has failed and you find that she felt the same way about you, and now you are married... :(
Sia has brought the full emotion of the song through her version (very similar to the Pretenders version actually) ... so kudos to however is behind the arrangement :)
Like this version but Sia's is so haunting theres more emotion to connect with and relate to! Still she didnt write it these guys did so all credit to them for writing an amazing song tht everyone loves no matter whos singing it!
@estebanrivas95 "i hate when the 2 highest rated comments say the same thing. i feel like everyone thinks the same"......he he well they do-trust your feelings.
Very nice ... didn't know that the Kinks had done the original of this or of Stop Your Sobbing, both of which I like as sung by The Pretenders. Thanks for posting.
@z3driv3r I completely agree. This song is like a raw Procol Harum song. It hovers around in your soul and doesn't leave until... well, until you go to sleep. :-]
Sia is not a good cover, it is over sung and the voice takes over the song. It's like a death metal band covering I'm only sleeping by the Beatles by screaming the words, losing the tenderness.
@AresRoar That is what SIA stands for.. She needs no music. Her voice covers everything that makes a song good. It's just stupid to call it not a good cover just because she interprets this song in her way. Thats why its called cover :)
@Senj1n No it isn't, just because it is a cover does not mean it cannot be critiqued. It's not a very good cover nor is it very good as a stand alone had it been the original.
This is the version and the ones who say SIA's version is better are seriously missing out. Ray Davies on the piano and singing his heart out. the Kinks in the 60's were every bit the rivals of The beatles as the stones. Its Wim wenders favourite Kink Song he uses it in the Amercian friend
I love the Kinks but prefer the Pretenders version of this song. And what's the deal with Sia? does she have a lisp or something? I didn't care for her version.
I don't get how people can say that other versions are better than this one. @FightOffYourDemons07: People can say that other versions are better than this one because everyone has different tastes. Have you even heard Sia's cover? It's like she ripped out her heart with her bare hands, put it in an blender and took the chopped up pieces and threw them at the listener! I definitely think her version much more emotional and raw, but then again, that is my opinion and you have yours.
Ray Davies. And he is a genius. He wrote this waiting for news from the hospital of the birth of his child. Peggy Lee was the first to release it in 1965. Oddly, the kinks only ever recorded it as a demo. which is now included as an bonus track to the CD release to the 1965 Album "Kinda Kinks". It was not on the album at the time.
The Pretenders of course released it to huge success. Ray Davies and Chrissy Hynde had children together. Little known factoid. Hence, the connection.
Ray actually sent this demo to Peggy Lee ("Fever"), before it went to anyone else, because Ray was a fan of Peggy's. She liked the song and included it in her next LP. By the time that her LP came out, though, one or two other versions had been released.
eh...I think The Kinks' version is very robotic and boring. The Pretenders' version sounds a lot more emotional and has more elements to it. Sia's version is a bit overboard; it's a little too emotional and it's slower than the other two versions which I actually thought wasn't the best idea.
