I don't believe he makes songs based on what he thinks his fans would like. If he did, he'd still be selling out, but for a different reason. That's exactly what Jewel did in 2004. I was never a fan of her, but I give credit for her earlier work. I remember reading an interview back then and she explained why she changed her image and music style. "Because that's what sells". I believe Billy Corgan to be a true artist in that he makes the music for the love of it.
