I loved Doug's version of MY SHIP, and used it as an accompaniment to my singing of the song. At Doug's suggestion I posted this version above. Hope all of you who love this beautiful song enjoy! - Terry (terrynyc)
This is one of the greatest songs ever written, IMHO--enormously poignant music and even more poignant lyrics...very nice version of it here, although I have yet to hear the ultimate, the version that gets out of it everything that it has in it.
Haven't heard her version, although I've figured out that it's on the Berlin to Broadway with Weil album. Trying to find it on line so I can hear it. Thanks for the suggestion!
@RHutton2710 -- That's certainly an interesting thought...but I'm not sure it's correct. After all, Gene Kelly singing and dancing "Singing in the Rain" is the ultimate version. It is unimprovable, I think. But now we're getting into Plato's territory. I think he was the guy who said that images of perfection existed in the mind--but it's been a long time since Philosophy 101.
Thanks, this is great! I was wondering if in a future lesson you could cover some of the voicings you use and how they resolve/voice lead into each other? This is something I'd like to work on. Thank you again for the great lessons as always!
Great, as always! Interesting the juxtaposition of the solo track with the "bass player". On occasion, an inadvertent reference to Basie, perhaps (stride vs bass) :)
Very pretty arrangement!

@harveyardman: ultimate versions only ever exist in the imagination. Who's ever seen the ultimate performance of 'The Cherry Orchard'?

Good choice. This really is one of the most excellent jazz songs that you never hear.
