Now that Teena is gone... We may have to repeat this performance live. I'm so saddened by her death. For Me, she is as big MJ.... her music just touches me in a different. What a loss.... I don't know what to say....
I trained at Ailey, but we are not a part of Ailey. We are JAZZ AIN'T DEAD! Thanks for the wonderful comment. Keep dance in your life . . . candicegetsdown2
Hey Ms. Candace! I am a street dancer. I dance mainly latin and New York Hustle (disco couple dancing) from way back. Still dance. Are u in the video, if yes, which one are you? I will check out Demar on the other video u suggested. I watch this video just about every day and I have my friends view it too. I am hooked on it. ♥
Hello, mrapina. I love latin dancing. I just got back from Mexico and had to dance on one. Where do you dance? I'm thinking about taking salsa classes with E. Torres here in New YOrk City one of these days. I'm not in this version, but if you want to see me quasi mark a piece, check out my Dangerously in Love on YouTube or Change my name. You can see Demar also in Eye is on a Sparrow. Do you do overhead lifts when you hustle?
Ms Candace I dance in El Paso TX and Juarez Mexico. I live 5 minutes from the border and Juarez has over 2 million people. I don't do overhead lifts anymore as I am 51 y/o now. But I can still cut a rug. I know we will meet soon on the dance floor. The gods of dance will make it happen for us. I will check out the videos you recommended. I am addicted to all this dancing. ☺
My favorite part of the choreography was from 6:04 to 7:04 when all the dancers are synchronized. Also, it appears that they are interpreting the music & vocals very well. The guy in front during that time sequence is very good. He can move. I also like the Afro-American lady her line is excellent and some of it is in silhouette which adds to the mood of the dance. I love this song, it makes me feel very sexy.
Hey, mrapina, Thanks for the thorough review. I'm glad that you like the video. The guy in the front is my bud, Demar Braxton. He's beautiful, right? If you want to see him dance again, check out my Cain & Abel. Do you dance too? Have a good one. -candicegetsdown2
The Black girl is great. Her name is Shekitra Starke. She is currently dancing on Broadway in Mary Poppins . . . one of the few blacks in the show. We are all proud of her . . . Thanks for the comment, mrapina!
Tnks 4 the reply. Not a dancer. I'm a amature T.V. actor, writer, producer, director. I run an elementary school award winning video club. I appreciate talent and like to encourage/support it when the oppertunity presents itself. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic choreography to a great Teena Marie song! Great creativity putting it all together. I agree, this is worth putting together big time, especially with the recent revival of professional dance lately.
Thank you so much, Snocapview! In a few months after I work on a couple of other people's projects, I am going to come back to Teena Marie and finally put my TM medley together. I'll be compiling my song suggestions from the YouTube audience. Ya'll are my barrometer; so, I love this forum. Anywho, I really appreciate that you like my choreography . . . It's so nice of you. Have a great day, snocapview! -C
Hmmm, I just looked into Deja Vu -I might put that one into a medley -I haven't thought of Irons in the Fire, but I will take a listen to that one again. I never heard of "once an future dream" is that on her new one? Hit me back. And thank you soooo much for your comment! -Candice
Thank you so much! It really means a lot to me coming from such a soul fan! . . . especially since no one seems to appreciate this type of dancing or singing anymore on this wonderful planet we call earth. Thanks, Liccwidd!
Love the song, and the routine was on point even without the lighting and what looks like a small stage...I would like to see Out on a Limb (really think you can put something hot to that); keep doing what you doing. *I def rated this 5 stars*
Thanks for your comment. Yeh, when DNA moved out of China Town in NYC, they took away the lighting component out of their Choreographer's WIP concerts. Bummer. Anywho, Out on a Limb is so on the top of my list. I'm looking to do a 3-5 piece suite of her songs. Along with P & L, which 3 of her songs in order would you think might go together in a nice presentation mixing fast, sexy, and slow music. I would love to know what you think since you are actually familiar with her music.
I love all her music. I would like to choreograph to more . . . like the song Cassanova Brown, Shaddow Boxing, Out on a Limb, If I were a Bell, or her latest one, "Saphire." Do you have a favorite song that you would like to see set to dance by Teena Marie. I'm having trouble narrowing my choices down to three. I like them all; so, I would love to know what the general public thinks. Hit me back. Candice
I agree that it's tough to narrow down my favorite TM songs to three -- or just one! For a contemp jazz number, I would probably say "Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)," "Out on a Limb," or "Shadow Boxing." If you want to get a little bit edgier with it, "You So Heavy" is actually near the top of my list of favorites.
P.S. -- The title of this song is just "Portuguese Love" without the "&" symbol. She accents the last "e%
Ps. Since Portuguese Love (the song) is so known, I like to slightly change the title of my pieces or just all together different so, my pieces take a life of their own regardless of the music that I happen to use. Since I am in the process of making a SUITE of TM dances, the piece official name will be of one title and the names of the actual recordings that compose the piece (though credited) will be secondary. But, THANK YOU so much for your insight, Big10! I appreciate it.
Yeah, I thought that you might have intentionally altered the title -- after I posted my comment. :-) Good luck with the TM suite, and I really look forward to seeing you post it after it's performed!
"Deja Vu" is just classic Teena Marie, like the others you've already mentioned. I like "You So Heavy" because of the slow build-up during the song, then Teena's scatting, and ending with Stevie Ray Vaughn's guitar riffs. The whole "Emerald City" album was very underrated in my opinion, I guess since she was a bit more experimental with her song choices.
No, I'm mainly a Salsa dancer in Houston -- but I appreciate all styles of dancing in general. Plus, I've been a huge fan of Teena Marie ever since "Square Biz" came out. (I'm showing my age now!)
I just saw your salsa videos. Incredible dancing and choreo. The closest I've come to salsa dancing is when I performed on Television 13 episodes of Club Labomba, choreo by Israel Martinez. I wish to learn more when I get older. I loved Teena Marie since "Lover Girl!" -C
Amazing song and choreography. God bless them all. (From Taipei)
