Just ice crystals in the atmosphere that cause it.For thousands of years people have seen "sundogs". Wiki shows the recorded history of them people. It's not a UFO, NIBIRU, 2nd Sun etc.

@Jezla it probably didnt explode if it did explode that would mean it would be a very large star and would possibly collapse down into a singularity (a black hole). another part of the theory is that the star is the smallest classified star (a red dwarf), grew to almost be the size of our sun then shrink into a white dwarf and slowly faded over time. like i said before it would be to dark to spot, the only way we could see it is detecting its gravity effect on objects around it.

That's called a supernova. There are several potential candidates that from our perspective are overdue. However, not a one of those is so close they will "light up the earth" as though it were a second sun. It might be visible during the daytime, as was the star that formed the Crab Nebula, but only as a bright star. Most may be surprised to know a good telescope can see stars in the daytime.
Betelgeuse is over 600 light years away. If it explodes you won't see the explosion for another 600 years or more (assuming it still exists at all). The only way we will see an explosion in 2012 is if it went supernova some time in the 14th century.

That's called a supernova. There are several potential candidates that from our perspective are overdue. However, not a one of those is so close they will "light up the earth" as though it were a second sun. It might be visible during the daytime, as was the star that formed the Crab Nebula, but only as a bright star. Most may be surprised to know a good telescope can see stars in the daytime.

Betelgeuse is over 600 light years away. If it explodes you won't see the explosion for another 600 years or more (assuming it still exists at all). The only way we will see an explosion in 2012 is if it went supernova some time in the 14th century.
