I'll have to take a middle stance on the whole thing. He's part cheating, part being imaginative. Jumping doesn't really count as he landed on the soldier's head which was over the chasm. Using the ballista was cheating at the spearthrowing, but his aim with the thing is nothing short of amazing, absolutely worthy of the Ballista Engineers. The dueling ring was simply making the best of things. All in all, he's the kind you put in charge over brawn, but watch closely 'lest he get too ambitious.

*When he had the shield, he knew he couldn't reach the height of the other guys. Instead, he jumps and makes a hang area from his shields. The guys' were so buff they didn't even know he was on!

*At the pit, he saw it was too wide and too deep. He needed some help from the other guys, but since they probably thought he was a twerp, he just tripped one and used him as a bridge.
